Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impressions
This month's theme is "Disguised & Delicious." I love how they manage to make it so fun and more than just basic cooking.
What's Inside a Yummy Crate?
Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside there is a little checklist of what you can find along with a fun collectible sticker.
Cooking Tools
This month we received a mashing tool.
Grown-Up Guide
A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well.
Yummy Zine
Our Yummy Zine this month was all about fooling with flavors and flavor perception. There was also an activity at the back for us to test our knowledge. I love how they make things fun and also include some great educational information to go along with it!
Experiment: Sensory Taste Test
Our experiment this month was a sensory taste test. We were to start with a control test and then go into the blind portion.
They provided a blindfold and nose plug for our sensory experiment. We haven't tried this yet, but I think I have a few fun ideas for this one!
Activity: Make a Fold-up Fry Cup
Since one of our recipes was cookie fries, the activity was a craft where we got to make our own fry cups to make them look authentic.
They provided the papers, stickers, and some markers for us!
The Recipes: Disguised & Delicious
We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we had a recipe for meatloaf cake, cookie fries, and egg muffins.
Here is a closer look at one of the recipes. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids!
Meatloaf Cake
Mixing up our "cake" was super easy. My daughter buttered the cake pan and then added the breadcrumbs, egg, milk, and seasonings to our ground beef, mixed it up, and then spread it out in the pan.
Mashed Potato Icing
The mashed potatoes took a little more effort with the peeling and cutting, but they turned out great! She mashed them by hand when they were ready and we added a little bit of beet juice to get that nice pink color.
When the meatloaf was done, it was time to ice and decorate our cake.
I thought our cake looked great! We used some cherry tomatoes to look just like cherries and it really did resemble a cherry cake!
It was actually pretty delicious! I loved to eat my mashed potatoes and meatloaf in one bite together, so this was perfect and much neater! My family really liked it, too. It was simple, fun, and not too messy, so I think this will be a repeat recipe!
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping
We received three recipes, a cooking tool, two different activities, and some educational information. While we had to purchase the cooking ingredients ourselves, I think this was still a great value due to the wonderful experience we had!
Key Takeaways
Our meatloaf cake was a lot of fun to make and my daughter can't wait to make the cookie fries next! I love how much this box excites her and makes her want to try new foods!
