Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impressions
Pancakes are a staple in our house so I knew this "Rise & Shine" theme would be appreciated by my family!
What's Inside a Yummy Crate?
Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside there is a little checklist of what you can find, along with a fun collectible sticker.
Cooking Tools
This month we received a plastic bottle for helping us pour some fun pancake shapes.
There was also a small sifter for us to use along with some stencils.
Grown-Up Guide
A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well.
Yummy Zine
Our Yummy Zine this month was all about leavening and pancakes around the world. There was also an activity at the back for us to test our knowledge. The mix of fun and education is part of what I love about this box!
Experiment: Fizzing Leaveners
Our experiment this month was to make some fizzing leaveners using kitchen staples like baking soda and baking powder.
Activity: Play Flipping Flapjacks
Our activity was to decorate a cute stuffed pancake and practice our flipping skills.
Her flapjack turned out so cute! We had some fun competing with our flipping skills, too.
The Recipes: Rise & Shine
We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we received recipes for Fluffy Pancakes, Folded Pancakes, and Strawberry Syrup.
Here is a closer look at our Fluffy Pancake recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids!
Fluffy Pancakes
The recipe for our pancakes was easy to make and my daughter got to practice a lot of measuring skills!
Then she had some fun using the bottle to make some silly pancake shapes while I worked on our round pancakes. She was eager to use the stencils to sift some powdered sugar designs on them!
Aren't those cute? I have a feeling the stencils will be used frequently around here for pancake mornings!
I take full credit for the overdone pancakes (electric stovetops and old pans! Agh!), but we had a lot of pancakes to show for all of our hard work. We had breakfast for dinner and everyone thought they were delicious. We actually only had one lonely pancake left at the end because the kids gobbled them up! This may be our new go-to recipe!
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping
I think this month was totally worth it! In addition to the educational information, we received three recipes, three cooking tools (counting the stencils), a fun experiment, and a cute flapjack to decorate and play with!
Key Takeaways
This was another great experience for my daughter and I! We love working in the kitchen together and while the recipes were not very diverse this month, they were certainly useful and delicious!
