My kids and I love getting outdoors whenever we can so we were excited to explore a new box that encourages us to do just that! Wanlow is an outdoor adventure box for kids ages 6-11 that includes games, activities, and outdoor gear that are all built around spending time outdoors. Boxes will include educational information and will often be based on different outdoor themes like animals, gardening, or star gazing with a focus on the core values of creativity, fun, and building a relationship with nature!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impression
It looked like there was some fun stuff inside of this box! My kids and I were eager to check it out!
What's Inside a Wanlow Welcome Box?
Everyone begins with the welcome box! Inside you will find a guide that tells you all about your box and the contents. There were also tons of activities such as a nature-themed crossword puzzle and a camping-themed word search. I love the idea of the nature treasure hunt and all of the fun facts shared throughout make this guide the perfect mix of fun and education!
Coalatree Grandview Hammock - Retail Value $59.99
I love the design of this hammock! It's such a cool style and of course, the fact that it is packable and takes up minimal space makes it even better! This is made from lightweight 100% nylon material and can hold up to 450 lbs! It included the ropes and two carabiners so that we can hang it up when we are ready to relax in nature. The pouch that it comes in, which is attached, actually turns into a little side pocket for your hammock. It measures 96"x54" and it seems like it would be a comfortable place to rest and catch up on your nature journaling!
1000 Hours Outside Yearlong Companion Journal - Retail Value $12.95
I actually follow this account, @1000HoursOutside, on Instagram and I knew that they had a book, but what I didn't know was that they had this awesome companion journal to go along with it! If you are really trying to be intentional about getting outside, or if you are trying to incorporate the outdoors more into your homeschool day (like we are), then this book is great! There are pages to record your time outside in both a chart form or with a more decorative activity wheel along with some quick spots to record what you saw or what you did while you were outside. It seems like it would be perfect to use as a family (which we will do) or you can have each child keep their own journal to really be creative and more intentional with. You can make this as simple or as detailed as you want, but either way, it's a great way to track your progress and see how much outdoor time you can log!
Conservation Pen and Pencil Set - Retail Value $13.56
This pen and pencil set is perfect for recording our outdoor time in our companion journal! I really like that it came with both a ballpoint pen and a mechanical pencil so that you have two options and the wooden barrel gives it a nice natural look. Each pen also features a quote on it, like this one from Jane Goodall, "The least I can do is speak out for those who can’t speak for themselves." The pen and pencil both wrote well, but the mechanical pencil does not appear to be refillable and doesn't indicate what size lead it takes.
Death Valley Star Gazing Magnetic Postcard - Retail Value $4.99
This last item is so cool and unique! On the back, it looks just like a postcard while the front features a beautiful image of Death Valley National Park, but what makes this so unique is that it's actually magnetic! Now you can send someone a postcard and they can put it directly on their fridge without having to move things around to clear a magnet for it (which is usually the case in our home!). Just note it is only magnetic on one side so you can only display the image, not your greeting! Our booklet provided some great ideas for what we can write about on our postcard and they encourage us to mail it.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $49.99 + free shipping in the US ($19.99 to Canada).
If we add up the retail value of our items, our total comes to just over $91 which is a pretty great value for this box! With just four items in this box, that might not feel like a lot, but I think these were quality items that will last through many outdoor adventures!
Key Takeaways
I love the idea of getting outside with my kids and this box is a great way to be intentional about it and give our time outside a purpose! The Welcome Box felt like a great little teaser and while it was a nice introduction, I'm actually really looking forward to seeing what the monthly boxes have in store for them! I may just have to incorporate this box into our homeschool curriculum full-time because I know my kids and I will appreciate all of the adventures this box can inspire!
