First Impressions

With only 28 days of summer vacation left, I am sad to see this beautiful season come to an end. And with that, was shocked that the Walmart Summer Beauty Box just landed on my doorstep now! After a bit of delay, I was excited to see just what products were in store for me this quarter. Read below to see for yourself just what I received.

This quarter we received a pamphlet detailing the entire self-care collection offered for summer. Only four of the items had full descriptions, while the other 12 options just listed the name and full-size value. With the slogan "It's Glow Time" most of this month's options were skin care based over make up, and it wasn't disclosed just how many items we should expect to receive.

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier, Pina Colada - Estimated Value - $1.50 - Buy a pack of 6 for $8.98

While I am all for hydrating and trying new drink mixes, I feel receiving this Liquid I.V. powder in every box for the last almost 2 years has been a bit redundant. Personally, I find the flavor to be way too salty, and just not enjoyable. I have been passing these off to my husband who brings them to work to share, but I'm feeling a little bit selfish and would like to try a new product I haven't yet discovered, not more powder. Anybody else with me on this?

Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with Sunscreen - Estimated Value - $0.85 - Buy a 3.0 oz container for $14.92

Cetaphil is a brand that I grew up using and to this day still enjoy. I've tried multiple products from this brand and have enjoyed almost all of them. This oil-free facial moisturizer contains SPF 35 and is lightweight. Not only is it not greasy, but it protects against UVA and UVB rays. It works great under make up, and helps protect my skin, while hydrating it. The sample size is a bit small, and it seems the tube isn't 100% full, but I did manage to get a couple of days of face protection out of this single tube.

Sagely Naturals Extra Strength Pain Relief Cream - Estimated Value - $0.27 - Buy a 3 oz bottle for $9.97

So, funny story here. I love pretty much anything menthol flavored. My mom and grandma are Mentholatum freaks and use it every single night, and I have fallen into that habit as well. That being said, I figured this plant-based, clean alternative to chemical packed products would be along those same lines scent wise. Well, I discovered that this was a little more potent than what I am used to! Because this cream has a different focus than what I typically use menthol products for, I did follow the instructions and placed it on my calves which were sore and achy from our weekend at BowFest. Thinking it would be an easy, cooling sensation, I soon discovered my legs were "cooly burning!" Because I didn't want to store the opened foil packet (because we all know that's a pain in the butt), I used the entire sample, and I think it was a little too much. My husband laughed hysterically at me, because he has prior experience with Bengay and IcyHot where I do not, and he said that's exactly what it's supposed to do. All in all, I had no aches left in my calves because they sort of went numb. Yikes! What did you think about this product? Maybe the rollerball version would be more suited for my needs! 🤣

BIC Soleil Escape Razor - Estimated Value $1.64 - Buy a 3 pack for $4.92

Do any other moms notice your self-care gets a little left behind because you're so busy worrying about everyone else? After thinking about it, I think I've been using the same "disposable" shaver for months, and I wonder why it hasn't been working! Duh! So, while I know receiving a razor probably isn't the most exciting item a girl could get in a Walmart Beauty Box, I was actually excited for this. With a light scent of lavender and eucalyptus (both of which I adore), this 3-blade razor also features a moisture strip with 100% natural almond oil. Paired with regular soap (because who remembers to buy shaving cream), this razor left a really close and smooth shave, all while keeping my legs from feeling dry. The handle was easy to grip, and I can proudly say I didn't nick myself even once!

Dickinson's 100% Natural Pore Perfecting Toner - Estimated Value $0.96 - Buy a 16 oz bottle for $4.68

As a young girl I struggled with acne, so much so that I was prescribed Accutane at the age of 13. I had tried every antibiotic, cream, and natural product out there, and still struggled. Of course, Accutane cleared my acne right up, but with some terrible, terrible side effects. After about 6 months of pills and monthly blood work, we ended up stopping the treatment and going back to something with less risks. Coupled with my daily meds, I was told to use witch hazel to help dry up my skin, which worked okay as a supplement. As I have aged, my acne has for the most part has disappeared, but because of my past I do have some larger pores. I haven't used witch hazel in years, so I was intrigued to try it again to see how it would help. With the same scent I remember, I found this version to be a little less drying than I remembered it being, though it did seem to "tighten" my face up a bit after applying. I'm interested to see if it will make a difference in the long run, and plan on keeping it in my daily routine.

Go Gray Purple Toning Masque - Estimated Value $3.49

Though I don't have gray hair, I do enjoy purple toning masques to help brighten up the blonde in my hair. It's been a while since my last highlight session, so I gave this a whirl to help pull out some of the yellow tones I have due to our hard water. After letting this masque soak for 5 minutes, I rinsed, and let my hair air dry. Because this was packed with pro-vitamin B5, oat bran and orange peel extract, I did notice my hair was definitely softer and less frizzy, which is always a plus. As far as neutralizing the unwanted warm tones my hair has accumulated, I could see a bit of a difference, but because my highlights are so grown out, it was hard to really tell. Looks like mama needs to call the salon for a me day!

Verdict

In my last review, I noted that the Walmart Beauty Box was on the up and up lately and was pretty excited about most of the products I received, noting the value of the box was over three times the cost of it. This quarter, I'm feeling a bit the opposite! Not only did I receive this box late, but I calculated the value to be $8.71, which is only $1.73 over the cost of the box. Coupled with the fact that $1.50 of that was allocated for the drink powder that I just don't plain like, I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I was more than happy to receive the razor, and try out the masque, and witch hazel, but usually Walmart sends a full-size item that really blows me away, and this quarter it just wasn't there. Crossing my fingers for an exciting fall box with all new full-size products, and a big value! Who's with me?!

My box was filled with packets. No razor, no deluxe samples. This is the third in a row of this mix of leftovers. It’s not even worth the low price now. I will give them one more month and then I’m done. How many Liquid IVs we going to get? I’m tired of them and don’t consider them a beauty item.

A purple hair mask is a bit of a crappy product to put in a box. I’m a redhead by choice, but unless you have blonde/grey hair that you want to keep ashy, that product is going to be a throwaway. I don’t even want to know what color that product would turn my hair.

So I’m new to this box & subscribed about a week ago. My confirmation email said they would be sending me an email when my box ships, June 6-27. Ummm I ordered it in August so just confused why it would say it would ship in June?? Hoping I didn’t get scammed or something lol

Thank is an interesting one Brooklynn! I wonder if they send a generic confirmation as the box was supposed to ship in June. I’d definitely reach out to customer service if you don’t receive it soon!

I have received a bit of the liquid IV over the seasons. Electrolyte stuff is expensive and I’m always grateful to receive any. I like the taste and am pleased with the effect. I didn’t like the hair masque. My grey hair goes limp with heavy conditioner. I appreciate the sunscreen. Any type of sunblock product is always appreciated. Razors as well. I liked this one. The boxes are predictable however. The sponsors aren’t varied. Too much Cetaphil. There are so many companies that the sponsors could be different every quarter. If I get one more stupid makeup sponge or makeup brush I’ll yell as well. I canceled every beauty box but Walmart. This is still the only one worth the price. I’ve found more go to products this way.

I’m glad you enjoyed your box for the most part Beth! I agree that there could be so many different sponsors! It’s also great that you enjoy the electrolyte powder. My friend has been ordering her groceries online through Walmart and every other week receives a small free sample goodie bag with more of those in it, so if you are looking for more, you could give that a try!

Sooo.. I’m not understanding how these products pertain to the “summer glow up” theme😁

Becca

I was wondering the same thing Ashley B. I thought we would have received a bronzer for sure!

Happy to see this review. It reminded me that I never received my summer box and sure enough, I forgot to update an expired credit card. I use liquid IV packets several times a week during spin class and they are expensive, so I will always be happy to receive them in a sub box. I usually end up using nearly every item in my Wal Mart box. Nothing super glamorous but the price is right and the rare miss I can always find a home for, especially these days. Small sizes of cleansers, toners and hair masques are so handy! I hope it’s not to late for me to get some version of this box…..

I always get Strawberry Liquid IV in everything so this was my first Pina Colada. Ok, but not my fave. I got double Cetaphil but not complaining.
And for any subscribers out there, they sent out an email to upgrade your fall box to a SpaceNK box for $14.99. I’m willing to skip Ipsy to try that out

Thank you for pointing that out, about the fall box upgrade! I had missed that email from yesterday.
Just for information, it’s not a strictly SpaceNK box; the other brands listed were patchology, PHILIP B, By Terry, eyeko, Grow gorgeous, and BabeLash.

Just as an FYI, SpaceNK is not a brand per se. They are a beauty retailer (akin to Ulta or Sephora) originating out of the UK, that carries higher end brands/products (they may have an in-house product line though like Ulta and Sephora do, I’m not sure). They recently entered into a collaboration with Walmart to have mini SpaceNK “stores” inside Walmart (like how Sephora is in JC Penny and Ulta is in Target). So the brands you noted (e.g. Philip B and By Terry) are brands SpaceNK carries (but are not traditional Walmart brands). So it kinda is a strictly SpaceNK box, as I don’t believe Walmart traditionally carries any of the listed brands.

I agree about the Liquid Hydration. I tried one and almost had to spit it out because it was so salty tasting. I didn’t get very useful products in my box this quarter, either. I think I would have liked a few of your items better, lol.
