Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impressions
The fizzy tablets had me intrigued and thinking that this would be a fun one for my daughter!
What's Inside a Yummy Crate?
Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside, there is a little checklist of what you can find, along with a fun collectible sticker.
Cooking Tools
This month we received a plastic bottle and a metal shaker ball. I love how the cap sits on top of the end when it's open! Usually they get in the way.
Grown-Up Guide
A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well so you can modify it to meet your dietary needs or preferences.
Yummy Zine
Our Yummy Zine this month was all about emulsions. I love the mix of educational information and food-related fun that this little booklet always contains!
Experiment: Create a Bubble Bottle
Our experiment this month was to make a bubble bottle using oil, water, and food coloring.
They provided a bottle for us and even included some fizzy tablets so that we could get our bottles nice and bubbly.
Activity: Make Clarified Butter
Our activity was to make some clarified butter for popcorn. I love buttery popcorn, but I actually never knew what "clarified" meant—I just knew it was delicious! (It's butter that's had the milk and solids removed so only the butterfat remains.) Can't wait to try making our own for our next movie night.
The Recipes: Smooth & Saucy
We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we received recipes for Pasta Salad Vinaigrette, BLT with basil aioli, and hummus. I can't wait to make that basil aioli for our next BLT night!
Here is a closer look at our Pasta Vinaigrette recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids.
Hummus
My daughter loves hummus and this recipe looked so simple, I knew we had to try it. The first step was to halve and juice some lemons. We were able to use her juicer from a previous box, which I thought was cool.
Then we added the lemon juice to our blender with some chickpeas, a clove of garlic, salt, tahini, and olive oil.
We blended it all up and it was ready to serve! We got some fresh pita, pita chips, and bell peppers and enjoyed it with our lunch! It did taste great—fresh and actually a bit thicker than store-bought hummus. We can't wait to start adding some different flavors for our next batch.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping
This box is a great value! Even though there aren't a ton of physical items, it is always educational, fun, and yummy. It's also great when they send extra supplies like the bottle and fizzy tablets for our bubble bottle experiment.
Key Takeaways
While we only got to one of the recipes so far, I am sure the others will also be hits. This box is so fun and a great way to get in some quality time with my daughter while we explore a new hobby, learn a little, and get to share a meal or snack.
