My BOTM Pick for October
The Family Game by Catherine Steadman — Retail Value $28.00
Book Summary from Amazon:
Harriet Reed, a novelist on the brink of literary stardom, is newly engaged to Edward Holbeck, the heir of an extremely powerful family. And even though Edward has long tried to severe ties with them, news of the couple’s marital bliss has the Holbecks inching back into their lives.
As Harriet is drawn into their lavish world, the family seems perfectly welcoming. So when Edward’s father, Robert, hands Harriet a tape of a book he’s been working on, she is desperate to listen.
But as she presses play, it’s clear that this isn’t just a novel. It’s a confession.
A confession to a grisly crime. A murder. And, suddenly, the game is in motion.
Feeling isolated and confused, Harriet must work out if this is part of a plan to test her loyalty. Or something far darker. What is it that Robert sees in her? Why give her the power to destroy everything?
This might be a game to the Holbeck family—but losing might still prove deadly.
Considering I have some of the kindest, most generous in-laws, I was definitely intrigued by this book! Our book begins innocently enough when we meet Harriet and see her get engaged to handsome, kind Edward. The only drawback is his prominent, wealthy family whom she has not met yet. Everyone has heard of the Holbecks and Edward has warned her of their intensity so she is apprehensive, to say the least. She gets forced into accepting his sister's invitation to meet and from there she is quickly drawn into their world and all is definitely not quite as it seems.
This book was exhilarating and dark and once things got really rolling, it had me hooked and I couldn't put it down! Everyone has their own secrets and the more we uncover about Harriet, the more the family secrets begin to make sense. The whole book had me pondering, are they really this sick and sadistic? Is this all a ruse? With each new twisted family game and interaction, I found myself questioning it all, trying to figure out where it was going. I had my hunches, but I was never sure; the sign of a good book!
