Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impressions
The fizzy tablets had me intrigued and thinking that this would be a fun one for my daughter!
What's Inside a Yummy Crate?
Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside, there is a little checklist of what you can find, along with a fun collectible sticker.
Cooking Tools
This month we received a gnocchi board! I was pretty excited about this since it's a kitchen tool we definitely don't have!
Grown-Up Guide
A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well so you can modify it to meet your dietary needs or preferences.
Yummy Zine
Our Yummy Zine always has a great mix of educational information and food-related fun. This month we learned about potatoes and starches!
Experiment: Grow Your Own Sweet Potato Pal
Our experiment this month was to grow our own sweet potato pal. They provided some toothpicks for us to set it up!
Activity: Make Spud Stamps
Our activity is a really fun one! They provided a mess mat, an ink pad, a mini cookie cutter, and a small roll of wrapping paper so that we can make potato stamps and stamp a pattern to make our own wrapping paper. So fun and creative!
The Recipes: Fluffy & Filling
We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we received recipes for gnocchi (yum!), twice-cooked potatoes (double yum!), and sweet potato cookies, which sounded both intriguing and delicious!
Here is a closer look at our gnocchi recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids.
Sweet Potato Cookies
While I am definitely excited to make the gnocchi, we opted for the sweet potato cookies this time around. The first step was to mash up our canned sweet potatoes which we were able to do using the masher we received in a previous box. Then we measured out and mixed up our ingredients.
Next, we rolled them into a bowl and rolled the cookies around in a cinnamon sugar mixture before setting them on our pan. Then we used a glass to smash them down a bit before baking.
We may have gotten a bit overzealous with our smashing of the dough, but the cookies still turned out great! They were really delicious and similar to a snickerdoodle, but with a bit of a fall flair to them. The kids all loved them and so did I!
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping
I think the overall experience of this box makes it such a great value! We get recipe cards to use over and over again, a new kitchen tool, plus materials for extra activities and experiments.
