Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
First Impressions
Having a 9-month-old at home, I was excited to see the little food masher and I knew my daughter would be eager to make some jam!
What's Inside a Yummy Crate?
Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside, there is a little checklist of what you can find, along with a fun collectible sticker.
Cooking Tool
This month we received a bowl and masher, perfect for mashing up berries for our jam!
Grown-Up Guide
A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well so you can modify it to meet your dietary needs or preferences.
Yummy Zine
Our Yummy Zine always has a great mix of educational information and food-related fun. This month we learned all about pectin!
Experiment: Test Out Jam Science
Our experiment this month involved preserving fruit and they provided two little Petri dishes for us.
Activity: Play Jelly Roll
Our activity was a Jelly Roll game with dice, little berries, and some foam pieces that connected to act as our pectin bonds.
This was a cute little game that was also educational!
The Recipes: Sweet & Spreadable
We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we received recipes for very berry jam, jam tarts, and oatmeal jammies!
Here is a closer look at our very berry jam recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids.
Strawberry Jam
We decided to try the plain strawberry version of jam first. My daughter got to work mashing the berries and then we used the juicer she received in a previous box (which has certainly turned out to be handy!) to juice a lemon.
We combined those with some pectin and sugar and cooked it down stirring constantly. Doesn't it look good?
We enjoyed our homemade jam on some homemade bread and it was delicious! This was a simple recipe that yielded a good amount of jam, so I think we'll definitely be trying more fruit flavors in the future!
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping
We had a great experience with this box and we received a cooking tool, materials for an experiment, game materials, and reusable recipe cards. I think that's a great value overall!
Key Takeaways
I love that we got to learn some culinary skills and science as well as play a game and enjoy some yummy jam! It's a really well-rounded box and it is perfectly designed for my 8-year-old to be successful in her kitchen endeavors!
