First Impressions

What a pleasant surprise! 12 days before the official start of spring, I received my 2023 Spring Walmart Beauty Box. As most probably know, this is not a common occurrence, but one that I will happily take! Though winter tends to linger here in Minnesota, I am so incredibly ready for spring that I could almost scream. With the harsh dry air, my skin is in need of hydration, but I could use some uplifting fun items too. Is that what this month contained? Read below to find out!

This quarter we received a pamphlet detailing the self-care collection offered for spring. With over 17 different options listed, you are guaranteed to receive six great finds. Being a mix of skin care, hair care, and make-up, the choices were rounded out quite well, but just what size items did they send?

Marc Anthony Repair Bond + Rescuplex Repair & Protect Leave-In Treatment - Estimated Value - $3.00 - Buy a 8.4 oz version for $8.47

This leave-in conditioner was pretty much made for me. Because I have weak, dry, and damaged hair, I use leave-in conditioner on the regular and this one is probably my new fave. Not only does this magical treatment condition, but it also detangles, softens, and smooths hair, all while protecting it from heat up to 450 degrees. Made from Rice Bran Oil, Rosemary Oil, Hydrolyzed Quinoa and Vitamin C, this formula is also Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Paraben-free, Sulfate-free, and Phthalate-free. Perfect for perking up my sad tresses, I was happy to receive this product, and will definitely buy the full size version when this travel size one is gone.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Fragrance-Free Hydrating Gel Cleanser - Estimated Value - $0.75 -  Buy a 7.8 oz version for $8.99

As I age, I am always looking for gentle cleansers that will take off the day's makeup and grim without being too harsh on my skin. I have been an avid user of Neutrogena products since high school, so I couldn't wait to test this Hyaluronic Acid containing Cleansing Gel. With a clear and slippery consistency, this gel lathered up rather nicely and really did a good job at removing all of my makeup and dirt. While I can't vouch for how hydrating it is after only a few uses, I did like the softening feeling it gave my skin, and all around seemed to be a really nice fragrance-free cleanser.

Covergirl Clean Fresh Skincare Color-Correcting Serum Moisturizer Primer - Retail Value $14.98

One of my least favorite items to receive in this beauty box are foil samples, but this one I can appreciate a little bit. Featuring four foil packets catering to varying skin shades, these packets can be used to correct color, reduce redness, dullness, dark spots, as well as enhance brightness. I tried out the brightening serum and did notice a slight change, but feel it would make more of a difference with extended use. I like how Covergirl created this packaging to be inclusive with their samples and am really intrigued by this line of skincare.

EOS Shea Butter 24H Moisture Shave Cream - Estimated Value - $1.78 - Buy a full size container for $4.97

With spring right around the corner, I really need to step up my shaving game. Because my go-to outfits mostly involve skirts, I am in dire need of a new shave cream, and was actually excited to try this EOS branded one out. Because I tend to associate EOS with the big plastic lip balm containers, I hadn't really thought about their other products. This sensitive shave cream contains colloidal oatmeal and says to increase skins moisture with each use. While I found this to be non-irritating, I can't say I noticed a huge amount of moisture when using. The natural scent was lovely, as was the lather, which created a clean, easy shave. And while I tend to prefer full size products in this box, I can appreciate this travel size version as I am heading to a 4 day conference and need to pack a bit on the light side.

AF94 Fake Advertising Faux Lashes - Retail Value $4.98

I'll be honest here and say I have no problem with my natural eyelashes, and the thought of applying glue to them gives me anxiety. In my 34 years, I have tried applying fake lashes once, and I literally looked like a Muppet character. While these fluttery lashes look lovely in the package, and I'm sure lovely on anyone but myself, I just couldn't bring myself to trying them out. That paired with the fact that they didn't include lash glue turned me right off, and they have been set aside for my much more stylish niece.

Sweet Tooth by Sabrina Carpenter EDP - Buy a full size version for $29.99

Perfume is one item I must sample before purchasing, so I can appreciate the inclusion in this beauty box. With caramel and vanilla notes paired with musk, this fragrance is very sweet, but in a light and easy to wear way. With an impressive staying power, I applied once in the morning and could still detect the scent by evening. My husband was pleasantly surprised and it was fun to change up my perfume game a bit!

CeraVe Cream-to-Foam Cleanser - Buy a 3 oz bottle for $3.00

The last item we received this month was another cleanser. I have to admit, because we received a Neutrogena gel cleanser above, I was a little disappointed with the lack of variety. Though this cream-to-foam cleanser was great for my dry skin, I would have much rather had a lotion to try! CeraVe is a great brand, and I did enjoy this formula, but I am a bit on a cleanser overload, and hope to see more of an assortment of products in the future.

Verdict

With a pre-spring delivery, I have to say, I was shocked to find my Walmart's Spring Beauty Box on my doorstep so quickly, but found the contents a little lackluster after last seasons. The calculated value of this $6.98 box was $13.51, which is almost 2 times the cost of the box. I felt like the curation of this box could have been made more specific for spring, especially if they didn't include 2 different brands of the same type of item. Overall, I will use every product and enjoy the travel sizes for when I'm out of town, but I would like to have received another full size product. Hopefully we will be impressed next quarter!

Truly loved getting my annual box, until they charged my card $698 which I declined and had to get a new debit card, they vowed to make it right and give a complimentary gift card that I never received. As well as a credit for the Spring box that I got charged for.

I’m happy about getting the box on time for Spring instead of the Winter box fiasco when they arrived in February. I’m not too thrilled with my box because I got 2 cleansers and 2 perfumes. I am highly reactive to chemically scented products so as soon as I unlocked my mailbox… migraine!
I got:
Kiss Gel Nails – fake nails never fit me. (Would have loved the lashes though!)
CeraVe cleanser – always love travel size cleansers
Nutragena cleanser – nice but didn’t need 2 cleansers in one box
Covergirl Correctors – 4 foil packs! What a treat!
Marc Anthony Beyond Repair – always happy with hair treatment stuff
Cher perfume – it’s already wrapped up tightly and in the garbage
Blossom body spray – right next to the Cher perfume

When did you get your spring box?

I’m happy to see these emails about the 698.00 charges. I was charged the same amount on my checking account from Walmart but assumed it was fraudulent and my credit union instantly canceled my card, issuing me a new one. However it’s been a major hassle to add the new card to all the autopay, etc. Not to mention an overdrawn account and time spent unraveling it. No one from Walmart contacted me or offered any explanation or recompense. I was considering resubscribing with a credit card but now think it’s not worth the hassle.

I was overcharged for $698.00 but I did get credited and also received a $100 gift certificate. I never got my box, though. I went into my account and that order was canceled and my next charge will be in May. I couldn’t find out how to reorder as the price on that still says $698. Bummer, I guess I’m missing this one.

I was charged $698 2x because I have 2 boxes, but I was not offered any kind of gift, so I reached out to them about 2 weeks ago. Finally got an answer saying that my account had *not* been affected, so I wasn’t eligible a free beauty box or a gift certificate. BS! I wrote back to them and am waiting for another response.

I’m so sorry to hear about the overcharge fiasco. Because this box came to me to review, I hadn’t heard about this disaster until now, and sincerely apologize to those that had to go through this! If you were affected, I hope you were able to contact for the gift card, and get everything straightened out!

I was really glad that someone here (Melissa?) brought up the overcharge to start with, so I kept an eye on things and wasn’t charged like that. I did get an email from Walmart apologizing for the spring box “delay,” due to some difficulty in acquiring the contents. It was probably their having to deal with their incorrect charge that was responsible. I’m just relieved that I didn’t have to deal with that.

They need people in their finance/pricing department who understand decimal points in money matters. It sounds like Melissa’s bank contact also needs help in this context. How can people work with money and not understand the basics?

No mention of the debacle where they charged $700 for these boxes, Sent a “whoops” email with no actual information, and an unlabeled gift card in “apology”?

Wait a minute – walmart charged people (albeit accidentally) almost $700.00?? What did they do to make that right in addition to reversing or crediting the charge? I canceled a few seasons ago as I thought Ipsy for 5 bucks more was a much better deal… I’m so sorry this happened to everyone!

Yea they did and it was so super awesome to have my bank account overdraft on the last day of the month!! I went to my bank and showed them the emails. I had already received an overdraft fee and had 2 things bounce!
Walmarts email said “it was a glitch” and it would take 5-10 days to fix! Fortunately it was only 1, but I incurred a second overdraft fee!
I went to the Walmart box page and they charged me for 100 boxes!!!
So I got a $100 gift card and 2 free boxes. But I still haven’t gotten the spring box!!

MrsLittle

They did. That was a fun day 🙃Some of us got a $100 gift card…

Melissa

I also thought that this should be mentioned. This is a big snafu that should be addressed. Anyway, I never got a gift card. Did you have to do something special to get one?

I was also disappointed in my bank, even though they did offer great customer service. But what happened was that I received a very vague voicemail from them that there were “things” going on with my account. I thought maybe I had made an error somehow. Finally got through to the person who had left the message, and she said that my account had shown up in a fraud alert. She told me that there was “a charge at Walmart for six ninety-eight.” I said that was a legitimate charge for a beauty box that I subscribe to. Then she said that there were 2 charges, and I said that was legit, too, because I get 2 of them. So I thought the matter was all resolved until posts started showing up on Reddit about the overcharge, so I called my bank back and found out that, indeed, I had been charged $698 twice. I told the young lady who had called me that, since she works at a bank, she needs to be careful to differentiate between “six dollars and ninety-eight cents” and “six hundred and ninety-eight dollars.” “Six ninety-five” is too vague.

I sent a scathing email to Walmart and blasted them on SM. You should send an email and say where is my gift card? Also check your spam.

MrsLittle

I didn’t do anything, just noticed a giftcard in my email from Walmart and BrandSource. I figured it was a scam, but googled it just in case and saw an article about them being sent out. I emailed Walmart customer service and got a form reply. My bank didn’t say anything to me, I just got a notice that I was about to be overdrawn and found the charge when I looked at my account. I called to dispute the charge and they canceled my card and sent a new one.
