First Impressions
Bespoke Post almost always has a good presentation. They have a different sized box for everything. However, this time it was just a box thrown in another box without any cushioning. Granted, that is not a big deal because the knife itself is so well packaged, but that may be the first time I've seen Bespoke just ship an item willy-nilly.
Inside the Bespoke Post "Kiritsuke" Box
German Steel Kiritsuke Knife - Retail Price $80
This knife was a new item and it's already sold out. It's easy to see why. The kiritsuke knife is a traditional Japanese chef’s knife perfect for all kinds of kitchen prep and seafood slicing. According to this website, "The kiritsuke knife is a Japanese style slicing knife that is used mainly for thinly slicing fish, vegetables, and fruit, using push/pull cutting. It is traditionally only used by executive chefs because of its difficulty of use and significance as a symbol of status in the kitchen."
This knife measures 12 inches, which a 7 inch blade. The German Steel ensures an ultra-sharp edge with excellent wear and stain resistance. The comfortable and stylish wooden handle is made from G10 + olive wood sustainably sourced from southern Italy. Bespoke's website said it is "perfectly balanced," but I found that it falls forward quite easily. Unless that is perfectly balanced for this knife–what do I know? I will say the entire thing is very light, very beautiful, and very useful. One gripe is that the blade seems to be laser-etched to give it that traditional wavy Damascus steel look. I guess as long as the website isn't claiming that it is Damascus steel, there's no harm in it, but I think I may have preferred a plain blade. Still, it's very sharp knife – in more ways than one.
Verdict
I immediately jumped at this Japanese style knife from Bespoke Post. And it seems like everyone else did too, because it's already sold out. Something that is as pretty as it is useful? Sign me up. The look may be fake, but the blade is as real as it gets. I've already served up food with it and I'm very happy with it and my choice this month. It's light, smooth, and sharp. It looks good on my wall when not in use. This was a slam dunk for me. No seconding guessing my choice.
Let's Talk About Value
This box clocks in at $80. That's $26 more than the cost ($54 with shipping). That's a pretty solid savings, especially if you were already looking to expand your kitchen knife collection. With the money saved, you could buy a knife sharpener, a cutting board, or a quality slice of meat.
To Wrap Up
