Little Feminist Book Club is a monthly book subscription box for kids ages newborn to 9 years old. Each month you will receive one to two books to help diversify your bookshelf. Plus, you will also receive hands-on activities and tools to help your book come to life. Subscriptions are offered for ages 0-2, 2-4, 4-7, and 7-9. From Little Feminist:
Only 31% of children's books feature a female character, and only 13% feature a person of color.
This children's book subscription sends books that highlight lesser-represented characters and teaches important life lessons with beauty and nuance.
The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.
This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.
This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Opening The Box
Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.
Here's What's Inside
Welcome Note & Activity
This month's welcome note talks about the universal experience of fear of failure. The note tells us we're sent a book about facing adversity through a skateboarder. The opposite side of the card offers an activity for making friendship soup. Using small craft items and other parts found around the house, as well as their imagination, your child can name what each ingredient is and add it to a mixing bowl to represent friendship. They also give questions for the adult overseer to intersperse in play to make it learning-based.
Skater Cielo by Rachel Katstaller — Retail Value $18.99
Found on sale for $16.58
This month the 2-4 age group was sent one picture book about a young girl who is a very capable skater, but struggles with the new, large skating bowl that was just installed in her city. When she falls, she gets embarrassed, goes home, and swears off skating. It's when two children recognize her as a skater and coax her to try again, supporting her even as she continues to fall before getting the hang of the new feature, that she regains her confidence. I find the message of wanting to give up to be relatable to all ages, and the narrative of unconditionally supportive friends to be quite encouraging.
However, I was surprised by this book selection for this age range! The illustrations are in a neutral color scheme, and many are from an overhead angle. There are quite a few words on each page, including some skateboarding lingo that might be very new not only to children but to some adults. We have a 2.5-year-old and a 5-year-old in our family, and our 5-year-old was able to connect with some aspects of this book (she was also familiar with it from school), but it was not able to keep the interest of our 2-year-old.
Discussion Questions
Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.
Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. For October we were sent one book that costs $18.99 at full retail value, and $16.58 marked down on Amazon. Not an amazing value this month, though this subscription has been breaking even more often lately than in the past. Regular subscribers of this box agree that the book selection, welcome note, activity, and discussion questions hold value that aren't quantitative.
Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.
Key Takeaways
This book may have been a miss for our child within the 2-4 age range targeted by this particular Little Feminist Book Club, but our 5-year-old enjoyed it. Collecting stories of picking up and carrying on even when we don't succeed is a good practice for readers of all ages, and I also enjoyed the reminder that every new endeavor might take a few tries.
