First Impressions
I am a complete science geek. With a degree in Medical Technology, I sought out all of the science classes I could as a student, and still do as an educator! Because I have such a passion for science, I am always on the lookout for ways to incorporate it into my daily life (along with my boys' lives), so when I stumbled upon Curiosity Box I just had to see what it was all about! Awesome for adults, a typical box includes premium science toys, experiments, and collectibles. What did I think about my first go-around with this subscription? Read below to see!
What's Inside The Box
Up first, we received a postcard with all of this month's contents presented. Utilizing real life photos of each item, it includes a short descriptive blurb and funny phrases.
Also included was a booklet containing in-depth info on each of the included items. With short bursts of information followed by scientific explanations, this guide is packed with good stuff!
Transparent Lock and Mallet - Retail Value $16.49
While the necessity for me to pick a lock hasn't presented itself in my 35 years, I can now add "locksmith" under my skill set. The first item that I discovered in this quarter's Curiosity Box, was a transparent lock that lets users see how it operates. With a locking bar, plug, and pins, when locked, we learned that you can use a mallet to open it. This technique only works on locks with a spring loaded bar, but is pretty darn cool. My (almost) 11 year old son loved the fact that they locked the keys inside a box, and expected us to get them out with the mallet. He needed to read the directions after a few smashes, but got it to work quite quickly. It has quickly become a conversation piece with anyone that comes to our house, and has proved to be quite useful!
Key Keychain
Included with the keys was an adorable keychain featuring an orange cephalopod. Helpful in keeping track of our transparent lock keys, the construction of this keychain is high-quality and I appreciate the attention to detail the character possesses. With a mallet behind his back, and the key in his hand, he presents perfectly with the puzzle, and adds a little extra fun.
Diamond Hourglass
Diamonds are a girl's best friend, and I just received 100 carats of them! While they might be created via chemical vapor deposition, they are still genuine diamonds and shimmer in the light like no other! While Hank was intrigued with this inclusion, this is box geared towards adults, so I called dibs! The hourglass measures one minute, and looks exquisite on the night stand in my living room. Not only is this piece pretty, but the background information shared in the booklet was very interesting too.
Beanie of Infinite Temperature
I have to say, the packaging for this hat was ultra cool. Presented with a kelvin thermometer right on the canister, this over-sized beanie is the color that you would see from a black body at infinite temperature. While Hank wasn't thrilled with the violet blue color, I sure was! Large in size for my big head, this item also features the Curiosity Box cephalopod mascot. A perfect inclusion for a late fall/early winter box, I appreciate the science twist, and look forward to wearing it out and about.
Minute Earth Explains Book - Retail Value $10.59
As I mentioned above, I work in education, and love to learn. I was super excited to see the inclusion of this book, MinuteEarth Explains How Did Whales Get So Big, because not only was it fascinating to me as adult, but also to Hank. With fun illustrations and to-the-point explanations, this book is easy to understand, with some neat information. Another aspect of this book that I really appreciated was that their website actually offers lesson plans for teachers! Awesome!
Cephalopod Bookmarks
The final item we received in this quarter's Curiosity Box was a set of 8 cephalopod tentacle book marks. These aren't just paper cut outs, but ones that are made from vinyl. Brightly colored and different in design, they make marking a page extra fun! Grandma even got in on the excitement, and asked if she could have one for her western!

This was my first experience with Curiosity Box, and I have to say, I am quite impressed. We received 6 high-quality items that were appropriate for the season, and were quite thoughtful. As an adult, I thought the items were really cool, and appreciated the fact that they could be also utilized with my kids. The items coupled with the scientific background included in the booklet made this a really fun experience, and I am already looking forward to see what they will come up with for next quarter.
