First Impressions
How cute is the crystal-covered tape that wraps this sturdy box? Such a lovely presentation!
The crystals were carefully packaged: nestled in packing paper and enclosed in bubble wrap. It’s not surprising then, that they arrived in perfect condition.
Enchanted Crystal includes two inserts in their monthly subscription box. The first uses several QR codes to link to various letters on their blog. One links to a letter to new subscribers, another to their Crystal Library, and one to the current month’s newsletter. In the November blog post, Enchanted Crystal shares some exciting news: they're working on releasing a new subscription option that they hope to have ready in time for the holidays!
Besides continuing to add entries to their Crystal Library, they share that, “With the holidays coming up we'll be offering a lot of upcoming sales and deals to give gifts or new subscribers a break on pricing.” So hop onto their website and follow their blog.
The second insert details November’s star crystal: Black Moonstone. The insets are fabulous because they give the history of the stone, as well as the metaphysical properties. I’ll share that if you’re like me, and prone to losing inserts, the same information can be found in their Crystal Library.
The Crystals
Black Obsidian & Icelandic Spar (Bonus Crystals)
Each month, Enchanted Crystal includes a small collection of bonus crystals and stones. I look at these extras as an appetizer; a little taste to get you hungry for more! The bonus crystals I received this month were four small pieces of Iceland spar and three pieces of black obsidian.
According to Enchanted Crystal’s Crystal Library, Icelandic spar “...is formed through a process called sedimentation, where calcium-rich waters deposit calcite crystals over time….Icelandic spar is transparent and colorless, allowing light to pass through it creating a double refraction effect.” What that means is that if your piece of Icelandic spar is clear enough, you might be able to see the effect by looking through it onto another object. This made it very difficult to photograph, but it’s an interesting stone to look at.
“Metaphysically, Icelandic is associated with clarity and insight, helping to clear mental fog and enhance focus. The double refraction effect is said to symbolize the ability to see different perspectives and find balance in life. Icelandic spar is also considered a spiritual amplifier, enhancing one's connection to higher consciousness and aiding in meditation and spiritual practices.”
The three pieces of black obsidian I received are smooth, shiny and a lustrous black color. Unfortunately Enchanted Crystal’s Library doesn’t have a listing for black obsidian (or obsidian in general) but a web search turned up plenty of interesting information.
According to Wikipedia, obsidian, “...is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.” It was first discovered in Ethiopia by a Roman explorer named Obsidius. According to Crystal Vaults, “This shamanic stone can be brutal and direct, yet it carries the wonderful power of catharsis and deep soul healing. It reveals the reasons behind one’s imperfections and causes of dis-ease, and provides a clear picture of the changes needed to ameliorate them. It impels growth and resolution, and lends solid support and direction during the process. Obsidian provides essential grounding, connecting the base of the spine to the heart of the earth. It is highly protective, shielding one from negativity in the environment, from others, and from within the self.”
A great start. Now, on to the main event!
Black Moonstone
This month’s featured stone is black moonstone. When I opened the bubble wrap, I was surprised to see that my specimen isn’t very black. According to the Crystal Library, “Black moonstone, also known as larvikite, is a unique variety of feldspar mineral that displays a stunning play of colors against a predominantly dark background. It is formed through a slow cooling process of molten rock deep within the Earth's crust, which allows the minerals within it to align and create the characteristic iridescent effect.”
Black moonstone has the unusual characteristic of being chatoyant. Chatoyance is a shimmering cat’s eye effect. I received a large, polished piece that fits nicely in my hand. Its smoothness and weight make me want to hold onto it. Unfortunately, while its iridescence is beautiful, it's difficult to capture in photographs.
Enchanted Crystal adds that, “Metaphysically, black moonstone is associated with new beginnings, intuition, and protection. It is believed to harness the energy of the New Moon, symbolizing the start of a new cycle and offering opportunities for growth and transformation. Black moonstone is also associated with manifestation and abundance. It is believed to amplify intentions and align them with the energies of the Universe, assisting in attaining goals. It encourages self-discovery, self-expression, and personal growth.”
The Verdict
November’s box was a bit unexpected, but certainly satisfying. The bonus crystals were fun, even though the Icelandic spar was a repeat for me. The unusual optical properties of the Icelandic spar are interesting, and I loved the obsidian because it brought back fond memories of my childhood; one of my favorite possessions was a hand-carved obsidian arrowhead.
But the star of the show, the black moonstone, was as beautiful as it is unusual. I wish I was a better photographer so that I could accurately display its beautiful iridescence. You’ll either have to take my word for it, or get your own piece!
If you’re interested in crystals, the monthly box is a great place to start your collection. As for the value, considering the fact that shipping is included in the $16 cost, I feel that the subscription price is a very good deal.
I’m always excited to see what this box will contain and what beauty and knowledge lie within it!
