First Impressions
As a family of hunters and die-hard carnivores, jerky is one of our all time favorite snacks. Easy to eat, delicious, and sealable to save for later, almost every gas station stop and grocery run involves a package or two for on the go. Obviously, when the opportunity to review came up, I jumped at it to see exactly how gourmet brands compare to "big box" brands, and was pleasantly surprised. Read below to see what we discovered.
The Products
People's Choice Beef Jerky "Thai Curry" - Retail Value $6.99
Texture: Extremely Dry
Ranking: 8th
I have to be honest, I had really high hopes for this jerky. I loved the fun packaging, as it featured the yummy ingredients I would expect from a "Thai Curry" flavored product. That coupled with the fact that the edges were clear so we could see the product made me feel pretty confident that this would rank pretty high in this month's box. Sadly, the incredibly dry texture and flat flavor made it come in dead last. I feel a reduced dehydration time and a little more spice would benefit this product immensely, though did still eat it up on our way to a basketball game.
KRAVE Zero Sugar Southwest Hatch Chile Jerky - Retail Value $6.79
Texture: Dry
Ranking: 7th
I am all about fun jerky flavors, and love spicy inclusions. This zero sugar version is perfect for a keto diet, as the entire package only contains 2 carbohydrates and 12 grams of protein. Upon opening, I could detect a spicy flavor. The pieces were extremely dry and crumbly, almost reminiscent of the old Jack Links jerky chew containers, but the flavor was nice - with a lot of spice and salt. Had the texture been chewier and less crumbly, I think it would have rated higher.
Think Jerky Grass-Fed Beef Jerky "Classic" - Retail Value $6.74
Texture: Dry-Mid
Ranking: 6th
Created by Chef Doug Sohn, this classic flavored jerky is made from grass-fed beef and utilizes a hint of pepper for a basic classic flavor. Clean and simple in packaging, I was interested to see what this jerky would have in store. Personally, I typically find grass-fed beef to be quite dry, and that was true of this jerky. A little more crumbly than our first bag, this pretty much fell apart in my mouth. With a basic flavor of beef combined with pepper, garlic, and salt, it hit the spot as far as flavors go, but wasn't anything that blew me away.
Tong Jerky Classic Recipe - Retail Value $6.99
Texture: Mid
Ranking: 5th
Like I mentioned earlier, I tend to prefer a chewy jerky over dry. While the flavor of this jerky was spot on - salty, sweet, savory, and a tiny bit spicy, the texture held it back from the rankings as it was a little dry. With 10 grams of protein per serving, this is fantastic for my keto diet, and a great snack. Made in the USA, it did have a soy sauce aroma, and was a great treat for in the car or anytime!
Think Jerky Grass-Fed Beef Jerky Sesame Teriyaki - Retail Value $7.24
Texture: Mid-Chewy
Ranking: 4th
Interestingly enough, we received another flavor of jerky made by "Think Jerky". This package of grass-fed beef jerky was "Sesame Teriyaki" flavored and was a lot more chewy than the classic version we tried out previously. Packed with flavor, I love, love, love the inclusion of the sesame seeds, and found the texture and flavor spot on. Created by Chef Gale Gand, this recipe encompasses East Asian flavor in a delicious way. A little higher in carbohydrates than some of the other versions, it was worth the splurge for the fabulous flavor!
Righteous Felon Craft Jerky "Teriyaki Balboa" - Retail Value $6.99
Texture: Mid
Ranking: 3rd
First off, how great is this packaging?! A bull donning boxing gloves, and the signature "Rocky" headband, this craft jerky has it going on for advertising. The beef itself features notes of tangy teriyaki with a punch of pepper and is minimally processed with no artificial ingredients. Texture wise, this particular batch is not super dry, but offers a good chew. With notes of brown sugar, teriyaki sauce, honey, and garlic, the sweet and savory flavor is a great mix. Overall, this jerky offered a new twist on teriyaki jerky that my entire family enjoyed. Also, with every purchase, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Conservation Alliance to help protect North America's wild places.
Climax Jerky "Honey Glazed Flavor" - Retail Value $6.50
Texture: Chewy
Ranking: 2nd
I love pretty much anything honey flavored, so I was really excited to give this honey glazed jerky a try. With a simple package and appetizing appearance, this jerky made the top two. With a wonderful chewy texture and bold honey flavor, we are very intrigued to try their other flavors - including their elk and buffalo jerky!
Jerk My Beef Peppered Beef Jerky - Retail Value $6.99
Texture: Chewy
Ranking: 1st
Drum roll please... and we have finally made it to the number one ranked beef jerky for the March 2024 box! With a chewy consistency that was tender on the teeth and delicious on the tongue, this peppered beef was absolutely divine. Paired with a slightly eyebrow raising company name, this jerky took the cake in terms of flavor, texture, consistency, and packaging. Not overly spicy, yet unique when compared to gas station brands, this beef jerky was a hit for our entire family and was voted number one by all.
The Verdict
As a first time subscriber of Jerky Subscription, I have to say I am a fan! As you can see, I have discovered eight different flavors of beef jerky created by seven different brands. While I ranked them worst to best, even the lowest ranking flavors were tasty, and made for excellent treats. Because I am maintaining a keto lifestyle, this subscription is a great way to get a little more protein in a delicious manner. Great for anyone obsessed with meat, this would also make for a fantastic Father's Day gift, or birthday gift for that hard to buy for brother-in-law. I'm already looking forward to next month's variety!
