BoxyCharm by Ipsy Review April 2024

Hi everyone! It’s Geraldine here, and I’m diving into my first impression of BoxyCharm by Ipsy. I’m usually all about skincare, but today, I’m switching gears to talk makeup with you.

BoxyCharm by Ipsy is a $30 monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It always provides great value compared to the cost of the box and includes 5 beauty items, including nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized.) If you are a makeup or skincare addict, we recommend this box!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Everything arrived packed neatly in the pink BoxyCharm by Ipsy box.

The booklet inside explains everything you need to know about what’s happening with the subscription box and any important dates to keep in mind so you don’t miss the beauty action.

What’s Inside

Tarte Maneater After Dark Eyeshadow Palette - $54

This is a trendy eyeshadow set, and I couldn’t wait to try it out myself. It has 11 mattes, 9 shimmers, and 4 sheens that go from warm neutrals and gold to coppers and berries for a really dramatic look.

Now, let's chat about the performance. For those with darker skin tones, the sheen and lighter shades are a hit, though if your skin is medium to fair, you might need to layer these a bit to really make them shine.

On the other hand, the shimmers and bolder colors are as intense as they can get. I was impressed by how smoothly these shadows applied and their staying power—perfect for lasting through your next big event. Or your workday if you are still commuting to the office. 😉

First Aid Beauty Hydrating Eye Cream with Hyaluronic Acid – $30

I already trust this brand, so I was happy to try another one of their products. This eye cream is unbelievable and instantly makes your eye area feel moisturized and calmer. It's definitely a must-have for dry skin types.

I even put it to the test on my husband, who's dealing with a sunburn (yes, he ignored my sunscreen advice). And it really helped soothe his skin.

A quick tip: You can also use this eye cream around your mouth and on your neck for some extra moisture.

Anastasia Satin Lipstick – $23

I’m a huge fan of Anastasia’s makeup products, and funny enough, I already own this lipstick in two other shades! This time, my box included ’Taupe Beige.’ It’s not a color I’d usually pick, but I ended up really liking it. It’s the perfect shade for a subtle, no-makeup look.

And if you’re not big on lipstick, this might change your mind. This lipstick is full-pigment but doesn’t feel cakey or dry out your lips. It has nice staying power, even through dinner, and I feel it stays on comfortably throughout the day.

Lithe High Definition Gel Eyeliner – $24

This is a new brand for me, and I have just one word for it: WOW. I’m often disappointed by eyeliners that don’t live up to their promises, but this one truly delivered.  It’s high-definition, super-pigmented, and genuinely smudge-proof. I put it through a smudge test, and it didn’t budge. It even took a good minute or two to remove with makeup remover.

The pencil-like applicator makes it easy to achieve any eyeliner look you can dream up. The brush on the other end is perfect for finishing your eye look with just one product. Perfection! 🤌

Lucky Chick Lip & Cheek Multi Stick – $20

I’m a big fan of multi-use products, so I was excited to try this one. I got the shade ‘Lucky Life,’ which is a bold, reddish hue that gives you the perfect natural, blushed look. Whether you use it as a lipstick or a blush, this formula is lightweight, creamy, and slightly shimmery, so you still get that sunkissed glow. This one’s definitely a keeper and a must-have in my purse.

Power Pick

Violette Voss Pretty in Paradise Face & Eye Shadow Palette - $43

I love this palette's whole ''paradise'' vibe—it instantly makes me think of a beach getaway! The clutch-style packaging makes it super practical for travel, and it even comes with a mirror for touch-ups on the go.

While the colors aren't my personal favorites, they are incredibly versatile and could work for many looks. The pigmentation is top-notch, especially on my skin tone, and the shadows have a creamy texture that glides on smoothly without any powdery fallout. I have a wedding coming up soon in the Florida Keys, and this palette is 100% coming with me.

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30

Value Breakdown:

  • Tarte Eyeshadow Palette: $54
  • First Aid Beauty Eye Cream: $30
  • Anastasia Lipstick: $23
  • Lithe Eyeliner: $24
  • Lucky Chick Multi-Stick: $20

The retail value of the box came to a total of $151. That’s pretty impressive, given the $30 cost.

Had a very different box other than the Tarte palette.. and was so disappointed with it! I wasn’t a fan of the warm tone color scheme but esp the bleh formula….

AH

Hi, there is six products reviewed but the total doesn’t include the Violet Voss. I believe this box is also more than $30. There is an Ipsy that is $30 with 5 products but there is also the higher tier with 6 products. I haven’t subbed to it since before the merger, but I just wanted to try to give some correct info on quantity of products and cost. Those are some of the most important stats on a subscription box.

I am sad to say I used to be on MSA daily a few years back, I think there was a lot of us that checked daily. Over time, I slowly stopped checking the site daily, and then I just became less and less interested in checking the site at all. Part of it is because I have cut way on subscription boxes, but the biggest reason I have stopped checking the site is the quality of content and all of the extra stuff that is no longer subscription box info. I remember the days where there were MSA days and sales, and I am sure a lot of remember the Popsugar monthly and special boxes. MSA always had spoilers before anywhere else, it truly had some golden years. If anyone is reading this, I hope you also have fond memories of this site.

The tarte was the power pick, not the violet voss…. Reason why I don’t come to this site anymore.
