Quick Backstory
As of January, I'm now a mom of 2 under 2! Our house has been pretty loud and wild since my son's arrival, but I've loved every single second I've shared with my toddler and newborn. Despite having the time of my life with these amazing little human beings, I'll admit that I haven't enjoyed everything involved with the postpartum period (i.e., lack of sleep, raging hormones, irritability, etc.). Thus, I decided it was time to get some extra nutritional support with the help of postnatal supplements.
I had been scrolling on Instagram a few weeks ago when We Heart Nutrition popped up on my feed. I always enjoy learning about different prenatal and postnatal supplement companies, so I hopped on over to their account. I loved everything I saw and decided I had to try out their Postnatal Essentials Bundle right away.
After just a few weeks of using their products, I've experienced a significant increase in my energy, my anxiety has greatly diminished, and I'm sleeping soundly. I no longer have to refill my coffee every hour of the morning to get by and have been able to enjoy the entire day vs. just pushing through. Here's a quick look at everything I got to try in their Postnatal Essentials Bundle.
What's Inside The Box
Wholesome Postnatal Multivitamin
During my first pregnancy, I read both Real Food for Pregnancy by Lily Nichols RDN and The Postnatal Depletion Cure by Dr. Oscar Serrallach. I had learned which nutrients were essential for the postpartum period so when I saw that this postnatal multivitamin had everything I needed to get over my slump, I was instantly sold.
It contains 23 essential vitamins and minerals that support both a mother's daily needs and her baby's continued development. I was blown away at the generous dosages for each nutrient, especially for vitamin D3 (160 mcg or 6,400 IU), folate (500 mcg), choline (320 mg), and vitamin K2 (90 mcg). I also really appreciated the inclusion of both iodine and selenium as many prenatal and postnatal multivitamins don't include this thyroid-supporting duo.
The serving size is 4 capsules and I split them into 2 dosages, the first in the morning and last in the evening. I thought the capsules were very easy to take as they weren't horse pills and didn't have a noticeable aftertaste. As I mentioned above, I started to experience a difference in my energy, mood, and sleep quality within just a few weeks. I definitely plan to keep using this postnatal multivitamin for the entire duration of my breastfeeding journey!
Wholesome Omega-3
At first, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy using this product as its Omega-3 oil is composed of anchovy, sardine, and mackerel. I assumed I would have to deal with an unpalatable fishy aftertaste, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was no fishy taste at all, just a refreshing lemon essence.
The serving size was 2 softgels which contained a combined 640 mg of total Omega-3s, 540 mg of which were DHA and 100 mg of which were EPA. I definitely think this product combined with the multi helped cure brain fog and improve my moods. While I've used cod liver oil in the past, I like how this product can be taken on the go and doesn't need to be refrigerated.
Wholesome Iron
Last, but certainly not least, iron! This supplement provides 13.5 mg of iron in the form of ferrous bisglycinate (i.e. chelated iron) per capsule. The serving size is 1 capsule which can be taken 1-2 times per day. Unlike other iron supplements I've tried, this product didn't cause any GI issues. I've been taking 2 capsules per day for extra support since I've had anemia in the past and had a slight dip in my levels during my 2nd pregnancy.
The Verdict
I'm in love with my new postnatal multivitamin and supplements! After using all 3 products over just a few weeks, I can honestly say that I feel better than ever (or at least since before getting pregnant). I appreciate how wholesome the company and its products are and I'm excited to continue using these supplements for the next few years.
