Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment — 4-5 items for Standard box subscribers and 5-6 for Deluxe box subscribers.
This is a review of the Deluxe Hygge Box.
The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Opening the Box
The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription printed under the box lid, as well as the month's curation packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper.
The included card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. April is about Awakening Joy—those words alone are a wonderful invitation, but they further set the scene with a descriptive paragraph before delving into the products.
What's Inside the April 2024 Hygge Box
Sage Tealights by Way Out Wax, set of 4 - Retail Value $7
It's always a good sign when a box radiates a good smell before you even open it. That was the case with this month's delivery, and it's thanks to these tea lights—this month's "element of light." I had mistakenly placed the scent as tea tree oil, but it turns out these soy wax candles are tinged with sage essential oils. Oh so calming! For how little they are, tea lights tend to last awhile, so I'm glad to have this four-pack to work through—and when they're out, I can see myself revisiting Way Out Wax to explore some of their other soothing scents, like lavender or northern forest.
A note on the hygge qualities of this selection—yes, the aromatherapy is conducive to a sense of ease and peace, but it also feels like an exhale to receive a product from a sustainable small business.
Teakwood Plate by Danica Heirloom - Retail Value $9.99
There's something about the simplicity of this little dish that feels perfectly right. My home has a lot of color and pattern throughout it, so a minimal piece that's of the earth is a nice grounding element. Compared to my dark wood table, this dish photographed looking light, but the photo below is a more accurate depiction of its tone.
Here the shallow bowl sits on my nightstand, holding the day's earrings until they are put away the next morning. Up until this point I would just set my earrings directly on the nightstand, but it's all the tidier and more intentional to have a place for them to wait. You could also use this dish for the tea lights (which come in a plastic base to contain the wax), nuts, keys, or anything else you can imagine.
Moroccan Mint Tea Mini Tube by Tea With Tae - Retail Value $5.95
Every Hygge Box will include something to drink, and this month it's a small tube packed with 5 Moroccan mint green tea sachets. The sachets are pyramid-shaped, bio-degradable, and plastic-free with a paper tag. It has a medium caffeine level, and the Tea With Tea website says 2-3 cups of this tea is equivalent to one cup of coffee. Rather than rushing the steeping process, I stepped into a slow, calm mindset and steeped it for 5 minutes, covered, before drinking.
The flavor is mild, but with a burst of mint. It makes for a simultaneously warming and cooling experience, which is a nice refresher in the late afternoon.
Farmer's Market Dishtowel by Now Designs - Retail Value $15.99
This tea towel reminds me of my grandmother! There's something so classic about the jacquard. The fruit and veggie imagery and the earthy tones feel at home in my kitchen, and the nostalgia this dishtowel brings is hygge-city. (I just made that term up.) There are some other delightful designs similar to this dishtowel, worth taking a peek at even if just for a smile, here.
Carrot Spice Knees & Elbows Serum by Dirty Lamb, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $42
I've received a lot of oils and serums in subscription boxes over the years, but none specifically for dry elbows and knees! While theoretically you could use any body oil for this target area, the specificity here made me happy. Fittingly, the container is a little wider than the norm, making for a larger roller ball to cover more surface area.
My little one was happy to participate in elbow hydration, however soft her elbows may already be. The scent is sweet, citrusy, and spicy thanks to the carrot seed oil, cinnamon, and lemon.
Bold & Herby Pretzel Braids by Stellar Snacks, 5 oz - Retail Value $4.49
In addition to a monthly beverage, the Hygge Box also promises something to snack on in every curation, and this time it's these life-changing pretzel rods. I had discovered these pretzels in the grocery store a couple weeks prior to their arrival in Hygge Box, and every member of my family was so into them we devoured the whole (larger) pouch, plus a second one, just in time for this pouch to arrive as a very welcome restock.
The little hands just couldn't help themselves! These pretzels are brushed with vegan butter and seasoned with roasted garlic and onion powder, and they are just so ridiculously delicious.
Green Mist Divided Tray by Danica Heirloom - Retail Value $10
Finally, Deluxe subscribers will receive one more item this month: this hexagonal dish. The grey-green color, speckled ceramic effect, and smooth finish are beautiful. The shape is unique. The whole thing is safe to put in both the dishwasher and microwave—score!
The two compartments of the tray are rather small, but actually I recently had a moment of honesty with myself that when I put dips and spreads out on a charcuterie plate, I should scale the amounts way back. I would rather add a dollop or two than scoop too much out and have it end up going to waste. So I do very much appreciate the petite size of the bowls. Here I've set out two Trader Joe's favorites: Unexpected Cheddar Cheese Spread and Moroccan Mango Chutney.
I'll likely keep this tray in my kitchen because I don't have anything like it, but it could also be used for jewelry, trinkets, and more.
Verdict
The Hygge Box continues to do what it does well. Consistent with how I felt after my first box arrived, I'm smitten with the consumable items that were sent, both by the fact that they can be "used up" instead of creating clutter, and by the selections themselves. Yum! The home & lifestyle goods are lovely—the wooden dish gives my bedtime earring habit purpose and completeness, the tea lights are the best I've ever smelled, the dishtowel taps into my nostalgia, and the two-compartment tray is a most welcome companion to my newly established commitment to serving smaller dip portions among a spread. I'm very pleased with the curation this month.
