BoxyCharm by Ipsy “Passport to Glow” Review July 2024

The theme was “The Secret Garden,” the box included spring beauty staples inspired by florals, botanicals, and aromatics.

Another month, another box! This time, my excitement levels were... meh. Seriously, I struggled with my picks because nothing screamed "must-have." It felt like a déjà vu of previous boxes. Still, there were a few gems that made the cut.

For $30 a month, BoxyCharm by Ipsy packs a punch! This beauty and makeup subscription box delivers five fab items – think nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. And guess what? Four of those goodies are full-sized. If you're a beauty junkie like me, this box is a dream!
Full disclosure: My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Can we please bring back the foam padding? The items were so much better protected. This month’s box felt a bit chaotic, with everything jumbled together. Messy vibes, anyone?

The summer fun booklet inside seemed out of sync with the box's contents. I'm tempted to let them choose my next box. Maybe it’ll be more thrilling that way!

What’s Inside

Goldfaden MD Wake Up Call – Retail Value: $105

Wait, what?! $105?! My wallet almost fainted. This brand is popular among older women (I'm in my early 30s), and I've sampled their products before but never this pricey treatment.

The texture is like hand cream, with a faint veggie/fruity scent. It’s a thick moisturizer, ideal for dry and aging skin. Still, no matter your age, this stuff works wonders on hand and neck wrinkles, so it’s a keeper. After using it, my skin feels more supple and plump in the mornings.

Would I repurchase? Maybe a smaller, cheaper tube for my hands and neck.

Il Makiage Black Card Mascara in Black – Retail Value: $29

I know, I just got a mascara last month, but Il Makiage has been on my radar forever! I was skeptical about the brush, but it turned out to be a lash-separating superstar.

This mascara is blacker than black and instantly volumizes and lengthens. Once it dries, it's virtually smudge-proof. But heads up, it’s not waterproof, so maybe not the best for beach days!

Laruce Beauty Kayla 4-Piece Eye Makeup Brush Set – Retail Value: $42

After much debate, I chose this brush set because I needed new brushes. Are they life-changing? No. But, the bristles are super soft, and they’re vegan and hypoallergenic. Plus, they're the ideal size and come in a cute hot pink case. Too adorable to resist!

Wingme Cosmetics Well Put Eye Primer – Retail Value: $24

I always struggle with cakey concealer and fading eyeshadows, so I had to pick this. The texture is lightweight and turns into a balm-like consistency once applied. It’s runny, so a little goes a long way. It doesn’t cover darkness completely but lightens the area a bit.

Beauty Tip: Wait for it to dry fully before applying other products to get the best grip. Otherwise, your makeup will slide right off.

Laura Geller Multitasking Cream to Powder Trio Meet the Pinks – Retail Value: $32

I was so excited for this pick because 1) I love Laura Geller’s products, and 2) The colors looked amazing. Sadly, it arrived completely shattered. Nothing could be saved. Nada.

At least I could tell the shimmery highlighter had potential.

Living Proof PhD Weightless Mask – Retail Value: $45

How could I say no to a Living Proof product? I’m a huge fan, and their dry shampoo is my travel buddy. This was my first time trying their hair mask.

I have thin hair, so I usually avoid hair masks. But this one didn’t weigh my hair down. Instead, it left my hair shiny, soft, and lightweight. Perfect for summer!

It doesn’t have a strong fragrance, so if you're not into scents, this mask is great. I even got one for my mom!

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30

Value Breakdown:

  • Goldfaden MD Cream: $105
  • Il Makiage Mascara: $29
  • Laruce Beauty Brushes: $42
  • Wingme Primer: $24
  • Laura Geller Trio: $32
  • Living Proof Mask: $45

Total Value: $277

Takeaways

Cost-wise, this box was totally worth it. But excitement-wise? Not so much. The picks felt repetitive, and I wish there were more options. Still, the retinol cream and hair mask are stellar finds for under $30! I’m pretty thrilled about those!

Here’s hoping August brings more fun picks and some lesser-known products from cool brands. Or how about a box full of viral products only? What do you think? BoxyCharm, feel free to hire me for ideas anytime! 😉

Other Things You Should Know

You have misrepresented what you received. Boxy sends 5 items, and as Annette mentioned, you have an upgraded box with a Beauty Boost (Living Proof hair mask), which is an additional $15, so the total paid for your box is $45, not $30. Kudos to Ipsy for removing the foam packing, which is non-recyclable.

Pretty sure they received this box from ipsy free of charge on exchange for promoting it on their site, so it wouldn’t have cost them $45, but they should have done their research rather than post misleading info.

AH

It’s sad that these comments have been up for hours and there’s no revisions. Mistakes in reviews used to be acknowledged and revised. I barely check this site anymore because of things like this. I also know this about Boxy, so I wouldn’t expect 6 products for $30, but someone that has never heard about it before would take this review as fact. And probably be pretty confused or disappointed. I miss the good old days, but alas the only thing constant is change.

You must have gotten the extra item upgrade as well which is an upcharge, I think otherwise its only 5 items.
