Hygge Subscription Box Review, July 2024

Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment — 4-5 items for Standard box subscribers and 5-6 for Deluxe box subscribers.

This is a review of the Deluxe Hygge Box.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening the Box

The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription printed under the box lid, as well as the month's curation packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper.

The card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. For July the Hygge Box is leaning into deep summer, and here in my corner of the world I'm trudging through the thick, hot, humid mundanity of late July. It's the perfect setup to lean into hygge moments, and the arrival of my box has served as a great reminder.

What's Inside the July 2024 Hygge Box

Modgy Luminary Lanterns, Candace Wheeler Bees - Retail Value $14.95

The element of "light" in this month's box is straying from traditional candles. It's this set of four luminary bags that you fill with water, drop a water-activated flameless candle in, and enjoy the warm flickering glow. I love that these luminaries are reusable, they store flat, and most of all I love the bee pattern.

Some might be familiar with the name Candace Wheeler but I learned from the back of the lumanaries' box that she's considered the "mother of interior design" and that she designed this particular pattern in 1881 for Mark Twain's home in Hartford, Connecticut. The history is so rich and it's filling me with delight. I'll be pleased sharing the story of these luminaries when I have an evening porch sit with a neighbor soon.

Oliver Pluff & Co Peach Iced Tea Bag - Retail Value $7

When I opened my box this month I experienced a burst of peach scent, and here's our first reason why. It's a pure Ceylon black tea that's peach flavored, unblended, single estate, with broken orange pekoe grade leaf. That's quality stuff! This large tea bag can brew a 1-gallon iced tea vessel. I'm going to save it for an upcoming backyard gathering we're having so that it can be sipped by many.

Agricola Miglioretti Organic Peach Jam, 270 g - Approximate Retail Value $4.90

This peach jam was imported from Italy—I noticed right away how there's little English on the label. Being raised by Italian-Americans who revere all things authentically Italian, I couldn't help but consider this a treasure. I popped some good, grainy bread in the toaster right away to give it a try.

Big time yum! The texture is faintly chunky, the flavor is sweet but balanced, and it's simply a blast of peach that's perfect for the season. My big plans are to construct a sandwich on ciabatta bread with this peach jam, turkey, sharp cheddar, and arugula.

Danica Heirloom Small Peach Bowl - Estimated Retail Value $10

Imperfect pottery is one of my deepest joys. I love small bowls with organic imperfections and soothing colors. This bowl fits the bill impeccably.

These outdoor photos are the most accurate representation of its color—it's a pale peachy-pink with edges that warm to a light brown. It'll be put into frequent rotation as a snacking bowl.

Poppy & Thyme Peach Bath Bomb - Estimated Retail Value $4.99

This is the other source of the great peach scent that wafts out of the box before it's even open. It's a peach bath bomb that's securely shrink-wrapped in plastic. My two young daughters love bath bombs, so we broke this one in half and let them each dunk a piece under. The water turned a light peach color and the scent was pleasant. Their skin felt so smooth after their bath.

Talisman Designs Beechwood Spreaders - Retail Value $18.80

Finally, Deluxe subscribers are sent one last item, and it's this set of four lightweight wooden spreaders. Each is etched with a different bird and some foliage. Each is ready to make someone smile when spotted on a charcuterie board or used for the simple act of spreading your jam in a quiet home.

Verdict

The Hygge Box captured my heart yet again. The peach theme was sweet for summer, and their way of engaging with that theme felt original and fresh. My favorite items of the month are the small bowl and luminaries, but the spreaders, tea, and jam will be used, and the bath bomb has already been enjoyed.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Kind of. As an individual box it is still available in the shop at the time of publication. As a subscription, if you order by the last day of the month, your first box will be the next box, and your order will ship between the 15th-18th of the following month (unless sold out). Subsequent monthly boxes will also ship between the 15th and 18th.

Value Breakdown: The Hygge Deluxe box costs $52 per month with annual subscription. Deluxe subscribers received 6 items this month. That breaks down to $8.67 per item. The total retail value inside the Deluxe box is $60.64, which was calculated using an estimated retail value for the jam, bowl, and bath bomb. In reality the total might be higher. It's not the best value I've ever seen from this box, but it breaks even, and even more valuable to me, it is a well-curated box that delivers me useful items and reminders to appreciate the small moments.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.
