Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment — 4-5 items for Standard box subscribers and 5-6 for Deluxe box subscribers.
This is a review of the Deluxe Hygge Box.
The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Opening the Box
The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription printed under the box lid, as well as the month's curation packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper.
The card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. August's Hygge Box has a theme of Quiet Reflection. As the breeze picks up and the air gently cools outside my window today, I'm feeling connected to the intro on this card, particularly this part about mornings: "Begin with a leisurely stretch, feeling each muscle awaken. Pause to breathe deeply. Prepare a breakfast that celebrates the season. Enjoy it slowly, savoring each bite as the world around you gently stirs to life. Find joy in unhurried tasks..." Oh my! As a mother of young children, this seems like a dream life, but one that I do catch glimpses of. I deeply appreciate this reminder that the quiet moments are an absolute gift.
What's Inside the August 2024 Hygge Box
Nordic Morning Cold Tea - Retail Value $7
Among its lovely array of products, each Hygge Box contains an element of light, a drink, something to eat, and a home decor item. Often the drinkable thing is tea, and while I do enjoy tea I don't drink it daily. Yet, I'm always impressed by the new and novel ways it's approached by this subscription. Here we have cold brew tea bags that can be brewed without pulling the teapot out; simply by letting it steep in cold water for 10 minutes. This pouch was so shiny it was hard to capture the lighting right so you could read the words on it, but it contains 10 biodegradable sachets of caffeine-free black tea made of Northern Fireweed herb, freeze-dried blueberries, and peppermint. It's delicious.
Studio Oh! Mary Jane Mini Signature Candle, 3.5 oz - Retail Value $13
This is a simple, soothing candle in both its visual design and its scent. I've never seen a fragrance that has its top, mid, and base notes printed right on the jar, but I appreciate the opportunity to take on the hygge practice of sitting next to a lit candle and doing nothing other than pondering the layers of scent.
Rustic Bakery Rosemary & Olive Oil Crackers, 4 oz - Retail Value $6
Anything with rosemary and olive oil is going to be a win in my book, and these crunchy crackers are no exception. When I opened the bag the herby scent must've wafted through my entire home because my mom and daughters, the uncompromising Italian-Americans that they are, came from far and wide to see what the good smell was. And then the box proceeded to be devoured.
It's a shame they went so fast because they would've been epic paired with charcuterie fixings. But that's part of what's so fun about subscriptions—they often introduce us to things we realize we can't live without!
Cuccio Somatology Botanicals Hand & Body Wash, 8 fl oz - Retail Value $39
More to do with wonderful herbs, this hydrating body wash offers a sage and sandalwood scent, and its dancing earthy aroma is what shower dreams are made of. I love the stress relief of this wash's scent, and I love the way it's left my skin feeling so nourished.
Homesweet Homegrown by Robyn Jasko (author) and Jennifer Biggs (illustrator) - Retail Value $9.95
The final item in the Standard box is this gardening book that gives tips and hacks for sustainable living solutions that both novice and experienced gardeners will learn from. It gives an intro into all sorts of approaches to gardening, no matter the size or circumstance of your home and outdoor space, offering enough info to get you going, but not so much that it's overwhelming. What to plant, where, how to start the seeds, how much to plant, how long it will take, what to make with what you've grown—all these things and more are told in an approachable manner, with illustrations for smile-inducing visuals throughout. Will this be the book that gets me finally going with a garden? I hope!
Danica Heirloom Plant Pot in Jewel - Retail Value $18
Deluxe box subscribers have two more items in the mix. The first is this petite planter with a dipped teal finish. It could hold a small succulent or other plant, but I think I'll instead use it to hold earrings that can't be hung. That way I can pick it up and interact with it more often.
Amborella Organics Lemon & Thyme Seed-Bearing Lollipop - Buy 3 for $6.75
This lollipop is a lemon-thyme flavored treat that's allergen-free, kosher, and vegan. Once your pop has been consumed, you can plant the biodegradable stick in an endeavor to grow thyme. Their website says this, which I find to be so great: "Seed growth is not a guarantee but a quest! Enjoy the experience." Ha! Yes! My girls and I recently started radishes from seed, and a few weeks in it was overtaken by about 8 caterpillars. We immediately switched into observation mode as we marveled at how the caterpillars blended so well with the radish stems. That said, I love fresh thyme, so I hope my stick works!
Verdict
The Hygge Box is one of the best out there. Their curation truly does capture the hygge spirit, and the accompanying card describes how you might use each one to enjoy the small things. I also appreciate how half the box is consumable, so it doesn't leave you with lots of junk lying around. The items that are meant to stick around in the home are thoughtful, quality, and useful. I loved the August box.
To Wrap Up
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Kind of. As an individual box it is still available in the shop at the time of publication. As a subscription, if you order by the last day of the month, your first box will be the next box, and your order will ship between the 15th-18th of the following month (unless sold out). Subsequent monthly boxes will also ship between the 15th and 18th.

The total retail value inside the Deluxe box is $95.20, which was calculated using a prorated value for the lollipop. Okay wow, that's an epic value!
