BoxyCharm by Ipsy “Enter Your Soft Era” Review – September 2024

This month’s BoxyCharm by Ipsy is all about embracing your soft era, with a mix of viral trends and dreamy beauty picks to help you start fresh this fall. I’m fully on board with the soft era makeup trend, and some of this month’s picks are perfect for achieving that effortless, ethereal look. I definitely found some new favorites, so let’s get to it.

BoxyCharm by Ipsy is a $30 monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It always provides great value compared to the cost of the box and includes 5 beauty items, including nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized.) If you are a makeup or skincare addict, we recommend this box!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

The first thing that surprised me was the smaller box this month—I wasn’t expecting that! But since everything arrived in perfect condition, I have zero complaints. Honestly, why waste a bigger box if it all fits in a smaller one, right?

As for the product selection, this month had so many tempting options that it was hard to choose just one! Everything looked so good that I wanted to pick multiple items.

What’s Inside

LYS Beauty Triple Fix Full Coverage Brightening Concealer – Retail Value $19

Color: MN5

I was pleasantly surprised by how well this concealer matches my complexion. At first glance, I thought it would be too dark, but the red undertones really counteract the darkness under my eyes. The wand is soft, and the smaller tip gives me full control over how much product I apply. A word of advice: this is a true full-coverage concealer, so start with a small amount and layer as needed. My only gripe is that the formula dries quickly, making it tricky to blend evenly. After a few hours, it can look a bit cakey. Definitely make sure you use eye cream under it!

Repurchase Power? Maybe

Just Ximena Cosmetics The 3-in-1 Stick – Retail Value: $20

Color: I’m Delicious

This one’s interesting…the description suggests using it as a blush, highlighter, or lipstick. Personally, I think it works better as a blush, lipstick, or even an eyeshadow—not so much as a highlighter. I’m a fan of multi-purpose sticks, and this color is absolutely perfect for fall. It looks gorgeous on the lips, and you can easily build up the pigment for a bolder look. This little stick is definitely earning a permanent spot in my purse!

Repurchase Power? Yes!

Il Makiage Mineral Baked Blush – Retail Value: $36

Color: Bootylicious

After having great luck with Il Makiage products lately, I was excited to try this baked blush. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The formula is loose, leading to a lot of fallout whether you use a brush or your fingers—so it can get messy. Plus, the highlighter in this blush might be a bit too much, so you don’t get that rich, pigmented color you’d expect. It took a few layers to achieve the right shade, but maybe that’s intentional for the soft era trend?

Repurchase Power? Not for me.

Fenty Skin Cookies n Clean Whipped Clay Pore Detox Face Mask – Retail Value: $37

This isn’t a trending product anymore, but it certainly had its moment. I received the limited edition version, which differs from the original in scent and packaging (the original has Fenty’s signature lavender packaging and no mint cookie smell). Normally, I’m not a fan of clay masks, but I was curious about this one.

It has encapsulated charcoal beads that burst as you massage the mask, turning it that iconic charcoal gray. And wow—my skin felt BABY SOFT afterward! I didn’t expect much, but it wasn’t overly drying, which is rare for a clay mask. I’m curious to try the original, but I’m not sold on the mint cookie scent.

Repurchase Power? Sure, why not?

OFRA Cosmetics Air Brush Setting Powder – Retail Value: $23

Color: Strawberry

I’ve used banana-colored setting powders before, but after hearing a makeup artist rave about how this pink one brightens the undereye area, I had to give it a try. Unfortunately, it pulls too pink on my complexion. While it does brighten, it’s just not the right shade for me. I might use it under my eyes since it’ll blend with blush eventually, but I won’t be using it all over my face. This might work better for those with blue or green undertones.

Repurchase Power? Not for me.

OLAPLEX LashBond – Retail Value: $68

I’ve been dying to try a lash serum, and since I’ve already tested the other beauty boost options, I settled on this one. So far, I haven’t noticed any difference, but the product is easy to apply, doesn’t sting my eyes, and hasn’t caused any irritation or darkening in the area. I’m excited to see if there’s a noticeable change in a few weeks.

Repurchase Power? Maybe?

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30

Value Breakdown:

  • LYS Beauty Concealer $19
  • Just Ximena Cosmetics Stick $20
  • Il Makiage Mineral Blush $36
  • Fenty Skin Mask $37
  • OFRA Cosmetics Setting Powder $23
  • OLAPLEX Lash Serum $68

Total Value: $203

Takeaways

Overall, I was pretty excited to try everything in this month’s box, and I think most of the products are great. I’m disappointed that the setting powder didn’t work for me, but I might find a way to make it work. The Fenty Skin face mask really surprised me—maybe some viral products are worth the hype after all. One thing I noticed, though, is that this box leaned more toward skincare and haircare than makeup. I would’ve loved to see more makeup options. What do you think?

Wow I thought my box was bad, glad you liked it though.

Carey

The last item she mentions right at the top that she chose this as her beauty boost item. 🙂

It seems like the reviewer didn’t realize that there was a Beauty Boost, as she didn’t mention those words anywhere in the post and the only place you see those words is in her screenshots, which seem to be out of order. She misrepresented the box, saying she got $203 worth of items for only $30, when the Beauty Boost is another $15. She received $135 worth of items for $30, or she received $203 worth of items for $45. Either way, she shows six items in her review (and in other reviews of Icon and Boxy) and never mentions that one of those items is an additional cost.

She did the same thing previously – kind of misrepresents or neglects to mention that there are 6 items due to Beauty Boost, although Carey mentioned below that there is a very brief mention of it.

She should work on this aspect of her reviews.

Carey

Here is what she wrote about the last item- yeah it should be more prominent but it IS mentioned if you read the review.

“I’ve been dying to try a lash serum, and since I’ve already tested the other beauty boost options, I settled on this one”

Jackie

Is the olaplex a beuty boost? Boxycharm only has 5 items.
