First Impressions is a series that (re)introduces and reviews new brands to My Subscription Addiction, drawing from readers' requests for an insider's first look. Interested in seeing more reviews from this brand, or have another box in mind that you'd like to see reviewed? Let us know in the comments.

Yes cookies! When I was living abroad many years ago, I had to make an “American” dish for an international school dinner. I ended up baking 10 batches of chocolate chip cookies, which is almost 500 cookies. As a very basic home cook, it took forever, and since then I have not had the urge to bake chocolate chip cookies from scratch. And why would I need to? In the US, it is easy to find good chocolate chip cookies everywhere.

So why do I bring this up? Because as you all know, there is a big difference between good chocolate chip cookies and great chocolate chip cookies.

For those of you who do not know about Levain Bakery, they have been a New York institution for almost 30 years. I had heard about them, but until now, had not had the opportunity to try their cookies. As someone who has been chasing great chocolate chip cookies for years, this was the moment.

About Cookie Club

Cookie Club is Levain’s subscription program. Per their website:

Every month, members will receive a pre-selected 8-pack box of Levain Bakery cookies (with 10% off + free shipping on every box). Some months, members will receive early access to our seasonal flavor, a month before it’s available to the public! You’ll find out the cookie box of the month one week before it ships and receive an email with tracking once the cookies are baked and ready to go.

The Cost: $44.10, including shipping

Where do they ship? The Cookie Club is available for Nationwide Shipping within the contiguous United States (excludes Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico).

What cookies will I get? Cookie club members receive an email approximately one week before shipping that announces the pre-selected cookies.  At this time you are able to log into your account and change the order if it is not to your liking or have an allergy.  If you do not change your order, those are the cookies that will be sent.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

About this box

This was shipped to the office in a brilliant blue box with subtle logos.  It was expertly packaged with each cookie snuggly in place.  The box was the perfect size to hold two bags of 4 cookies each.  And it looked beautiful, like one would expect when picking up from the bakery itself (which means this would make a great gift).

What's In the Box?

The box includes a booklet with all the current available flavors, so you are able to see both what you have and what you are missing.

I know that you are thinking, that’s it, eight cookies? But these cookies are big, 6 ounces each, which means each cookie is sharable. So they got shared with the office.

We received 2 of each of the following:

  • Chocolate Chip Walnut
  • Two Chip Chocolate Chip
  • Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip
  • Oatmeal Raisin

We did two separate tastings, first as is, the second, heated per the instructions.

From the package they still tasted fresh.

When baked, they needed slightly longer than was recommended. Once they were baked, they smelled and tasted homemade.  The team agreed that they were better reheated, but still delicious at room temperature.

As far as flavors go, I loved loved loved the Two Chip Chocolate Chip.  This was a great cookie.  It was soft and chewy with crisp edges.  And not too sweet, the mix of semi-sweet and dark chocolate chips really balanced the cookie out.

However, the office favorite was the original Chocolate Chip Walnut.  I’m not a fan of nuts, but the consensus was that the crunch really elevated the cookie.

The Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip was an adult version of a Girl Scout Cookie.  You know the cookie I’m talking about.  And the Oatmeal Raisin cookies were soft, chewy and full of flavor!

The Verdict

This box was a 10 out of 10.  We actually like them so much that we have decided that they would make great client gifts. Those who were out of the office during our tasting asked to be notified when the next one occurs. After hearing everyone raving about these cookies, they don't want to miss out on this delivery!
