Hygge Subscription Box Review, October 2024

Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of 5-6 handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment.

Note!! As of this month, The Hygge Box has merged their Standard and Deluxe subscription tiers, so that only the Deluxe is available. This ensures even more value and a curated experience with every delivery!

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening the Box

The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription is printed under the box lid, and the month's curation is packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper. I had just treated to myself to this local fall bouquet, and I thought the looked so beautiful next to each other, so you get to see the scene here too!

The card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. For October, we're snuggling into the Cozy Embrace of fall, always appreciating the slowness of the season, and noticing changes in nature as well as appreciating the comfort of our home.

What's Inside the October 2024 Hygge Box

Valkyrie Candles Mulled Cider Soy Candle Tin, 4 oz - Retail Value $8.50

Buy a 16 oz version for $16

The Hygge Box has sent Valkyrie Candles tin candles before, and I am consistently impressed by the way they're able to capture scents. I find that autumnal scents can be a slippery slope of being too mapley-sweet, but this mulled cider candle captures a flavorful aspect of fall in the fullest brightness, depth, and spice of this apple-forward flavor (or, in this case, aroma). It's simply lovely.

Alderwood Smoked Salt Caramel Marshmallows, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $7

You'll always find me sneaking around for the edible item of the month, and this one did not disappoint. It's a sleeve of caramel-marshmallow chocolates, and perhaps you'll be as pleased as I was to find that there are FIVE in the package. Enough to give a few away to share and still be satisfied!

The marshmallow part is more a fudgy consistency than true marshmallow—I live in a part of the world where Sarris chocolates are readily available, and they do a chocolate-covered marshmallow in a way that maintains its pillowy texture—but it seems intentional here. It allows you to bite into it without the whole thing crumbling. It's rich and delicious.

Choc-o-Lait Milk Hot Chocolate Stick, 1.16 oz - Buy 2 for $11.95

I love that our drinkable item this month is hot chocolate, and that this is a treat The Hygge Box doesn't view as strictly a dead-of-winter drink. That said, I've had mixed success with these melty hot chocolate stick things—they aren't a type of chocolate that dissolves fully, so if you abandon your beverage for any length of time, you might end up with chunks when things cool off a little.

I had a happy helper to taste test our hot chocolate stick. I heated up a combination of almond milk and cow's milk, and after a great deal of stirring and stirring, it was finally ready to taste. It was a very mild flavor. I'd say we heated up 10 oz of liquid, and a smaller volume would've brought a richer flavor. But it was an enjoyable experience together, and tasted pretty good!

Vince Camuto Plaid Shawl in Black Neutral - Estimated Retail Value $32

Hooray for wrapping-yourself-in-warm-things season. This wide shawl/scarf is very soft! The colors are ivory, khaki, navy, and black. A nice mix of colors for print mixing. It arrived with a bit of a chemical smell in the way that accessories sometimes can, but it faded after airing it out for a day. I do often wash clothes before I wear them, but since this one will be wrapped around me over clothes I might leave it be—washing soft, faux-wool materials like this can be tricky!

So many ways to wrap this scarf. Or you can throw it over your couch for something light to wrap yourself in when it's time to cozy up with a book.

MediFlower Tender Blue Hand Cream, 30 g - Retail Value $10

It's time to stock up on hand creams, indeed. This tube is a nice size for keeping in a bag or in a basket of "things" on my end table. The text on the back of the tube is in another language, but there is English text on the box. It tells that this hand cream "contains five ceramide components (Ceracare AC45) that make up the skin barrier and vegetable macadamia seed oil that has excellent moisturizing effect, maintaining the oil/water balance of the skin for smooth and moist feeling."

The texture is nourishing but absorbs quickly; the scent is a light floral with a powdery touch.

Verdict

As we round the corner into fall, The Hygge Box has sent us some scents, textures, and tastes that ring of autumn. This wasn't the MOST thrilling Hygge Box, nor was it the fullest curation I've seen, but that's okay! It was still enjoyable. One thing to consider is that this is the first month The Hygge Box is in transition: it has merged their two subscription tiers so that they only offer the fuller (5-6 items) box. Another is that I've noticed over the years that subscriptions tend to go a little lighter leading up to the holidays to prepare for a more impressive, festive box. We shall see!

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Kind of. As an individual box it is still available in the shop at the time of publication. As a subscription, if you order by the last day of the month, your first box will be the next box, and your order will ship between the 15th-18th of the following month (unless sold out). Subsequent monthly boxes will also ship between the 15th and 18th.

Value Breakdown: The Hygge box costs $52 per month with annual subscription. We received 5 items this month. That breaks down to $10.14 per item. The total retail value inside is about $64, which was calculated using some value estimates and some pro-rated prices. That's on the low side of average for this box, and totally fine with me since this box is consistently well-rounded.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.
