Inside The Nomadik Quarterly "Ultimate Hammock Box"

Trek Light Gear Double Hammock - Retail Price $85

If you've never camped in a hammock, this is your sign to buy one. Consider this double hammock from Trek Light. Made with 70D / 210T Tear Resistant Parachute Nylon, the moisture-wicking, fast dry material supports up to 440lbs with 3X stitched seams. It's 10 feet long, weighs only 20 oz., and compresses to the size of a grapefruit when packed into attached pouch. The website claims "years of research have led to the perfect design for napping or sleeping in your hammock comfortably without pain. Achieve a 'Zero-G' no-pressure-point hammock sleep experience." I've had a hammock like this for years and love it. I even put up hooks in my pack porch to hang it, since we don't have good hammock trees. I personally have trouble sleeping overnight in a hammock, but I love hanging in one around a campfire with my friends. Since I have two now, I might throw this one in my car to have in case of emergency.

Note: These hammocks are currently sold out.

Trek Light Gear Go Anywhere Straps - Estimated Price $25

What hammock would be complete without something to string it up? These straps - also from Trek Light – are heavy duty and easy to use. They are 9 feet long, about an inch wide. They have 15 adjustment loops to clip in the hammock's carabiners and hold up to 1,000 lbs. I've had a hammock for years and these are the kind of straps I've always used. However, I cannot for the life me find these particular straps anywhere. Not even on their own site, which is strange. They are very similar to the Eno Atlas straps that many people would be familiar with. Or a less expensive version like the Wise Owl Outfitters. The Eno straps are $30. The Wise Owl ones are $20. So let's estimate these ones at $25.

Steel Toe 3.0 Travel Coffee Press + Tumbler - Retail Price $36

The Steel Toe 3.0 from BruTrek is a french press on-the-go. It features a double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless steel body, and a threaded no-spill locking lid. I feel like you could drop this off a cliff and the worse thing would be you might have some grounds in your coffee. This bad boy is made from 18/8 grade stainless steel, BPA-free parts and paints, and a tough textured finish. It's big, but not huge. It holds 20 oz. It has an easy-pour spout, ultra fine mesh plunger, and a no-slip rubber padded bottom makes your french press stays put. I didn't use this at the campsite, but made cup at home and it was excellent. It could also be nice to start everything in your house and then let it brew in your car on your way to work, but that would require large cupholders.

Uncharted Supply Co. Multitool Pro - Retail Price $35

You never know when you'll need a specific tool, so why not bring them all? Every pack should include a multi-tool, like this one from Uncharted Supply Co. This on includes: needle-nose pliers, wire cutters, bottle-opener, serrated-tooth saw, philips-head and flat-head screwdrivers, scissors, and, of course, a knife. I like the big, easy-to-use release button. I might be imagining things, but the inside of the handles have a row of teeth that seem useful, but I'm not sure for what. Maybe just to hold something tightly? I'd love to give you more specifics on this item, but there is almost no information on their website. I can tell you, it's hefty, compact, and very useful.

Matador Pocket Blanket - Retail Price $30

This pocket blanket from Matador provides quick, light, and water resistant seating for 2-4 adults. It measures 63 x 44 inches, but packs down to 4.5 x 2.7 inches in the attached storage pouch. It weighs in at only 3.8 oz. The enhanced waterproof materials make for long term ground protection in the palm of your hand. I really like the integrated, metal corner stakes, but my favorite feature might be that they actually stitched the refolding pattern right into the blanket. That's so smart.

Basecamp Card Co. Cards - Retail Price $18

Always good to throw a deck of cards in your camping gear for games and more. This deck from Basecamp Card Co. features conversation starters on each card – even the jokers. The questions are family-friendly, from thought-provoking to goofy. The cards are weather-resistant for those camping trips where the weather in not cooperating. And when you're not using them, they store in a solid tin that can bang around in your backpack, car, or whatever. I got these out at the campsite for the questions. We didn't even play a game. I will say that $18 is pretty steep for a deck of cards.

The Verdict

I loved this installment from Nomadik's. Rarely do I get to test the items so immediately, but I had a camping trip planned the weekend this box arrived. I even got to show my friends, who were impressed so much came in one subscription. The hammock and straps are perfect, in my opinion. They are exactly what I would (and did) buy for myself to get into the hammock life. The french press allows me to up my coffee game at the campground without having to bring extra gear. The blanket is a compact and useful item to throw in your pack or car. The multitool is ordinary as far as multitools go, but is obviously incredibly useful if you don't already have one. The cards are a neat throw-in item for this box, but if I saw them in the store, their price tag would prevent me from purchasing. Overall, this box was a homerun.

My gripe with this box is very small: the name. If it is touted as the "Ultimate Hammock Box," I think it should include more hammock things: bug net, pillow, tarp, lights, a little bell I can ring when I want something but don't want to get up. This excellent box should have been something like "Hanging at the Campsite" or something. That being said, Nomadik's quarterly subscription has become my favorite box I've reviewed. It's like it was made just for me. In fact, it's so in my wheelhouse, the only issue is I already have a lot of the items they sent.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. More from Nomadik:

Order by the 15th, your first shipment will be processed on the 16th and ship in 2-3 days. Otherwise, it’ll get processed and ship by the 15th of next month.

Value Breakdown: This box clocks in at around $230. That is nicely above the promised $200+ value and $80 more than the cost of the subscription ($149.99, shipping is free). That is estimating the straps and the playing cards that are $18 from some reason. With the money I saved, I could pay my friends to bring me things while I lie in my hammock.
