First Impressions
The monthly Beauty Heroes delivery comes in a white box with a red-dotted sticker sealing it. Inside, our products of the month fit perfectly.
This month we're exploring Alpyn Beauty, and I've immediately fallen in love with this brand. It was started after founder Kendra Kolb Butler relocated to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and observed not only how dry everyone's skin was, but how resilient the native plants were. Thus she began to sustainably harvest the wildcrafted ingredients around her and transform them into beautiful skincare products designed to heal our skin. I also love that 1% of all Alpyn Beauty proceeds goes to the National Park Restoration.
If you're looking for ideas for how to work your new skincare products in with what you've received in past Beauty Heroes boxes, here is their suggestion, incorporating recent LILFOX and Josh Rosebrook deliveries.
The Products
Juneberry & Vitamin C Hydrating Cleanser, 115 mL - Retail Value $39
First of all, my dog's name is June, so I softened to this Juneberry cleanser before I even tried it. I hadn't heard of Juneberries, but it looks like they're similar to a blueberry in appearance and similar to an apple or pear in flavor. Now it's my goal to try one! In the meantime, I've been washing my face with its antioxidants and enjoying it thoroughly. This cleanser is creamy and smooth, naturally cooling, and provides "plant-based collagen." The collagen alternative comes by way of Tremella Fuciformis Polysaccharide, which is a snow mushroom extract known for its hydrating and skin-plumping effects. Interestingly, while Juneberry is native to Jackson Hole, snow mushroom extract is not, nor are several other of the plant-based ingredients on this list, so the reality of this product is that it's partially made from Wyoming native plants. I suppose I do feel a bit duped by the marketing here, but it doesn't make it any less wonderful of a product to use.
The small specks throughout this cleanser seem to be plant matter, which is all a textured exfoliant ever needs to be. I'm sure they do some gentle buffing, but they're pretty sporadic and so not a notable part of the experience for me. The bigger deal is the hydration—it leaves my skin not feeling remotely stripped, and I so appreciate those moisturizing qualities in a cleanser in particular as we enter into the dry, cold months.
PlantGenius® Melt Moisturizer, 50 mL - Retail Value $60
Following washing my face with the Juneberry cleanser, this Melt Moisturizer totally locks in the hydration. It contains ceramides, plus lecithin, which most of us know is commonly used as an emulsifier, but I recently learned it's also a phospholipid that can help ceramides support the skin barrier. Love a multitasker! We have 3 potentially Wyoming-native plants in this formula: arnica, calendula, and apple extracts. Together, they're anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and brightening.
This moisturizer is thick, rich, and smooth, and sits on the skin lightly until it's soaked up. It's said you can use it in the morning or evening, and even layer it with serums, but for me it feels too heavy to use any way other than by itself in the evening. As a night cream it's wonderful!
Willow & Sweet Agave Plumping Lip Mask, 0.35 oz - Retail Value $28
This fall I've built up a collection of lip plumping products—it's funny how subscription box trends can pop up seemingly serendipitously. I'd never really connected with a lip plumper until this one. It has a subtle botanical scent and a ridiculously soft, smooth application. Plus, the pink color is so inviting—we have huckleberries and chokecherries to thank for that. Both are native to Wyoming, alongside wild dandelion extract.
The consistency feels kind of like coconut oil when you dip your finger in, but when it softens to the warmth of your skin it's more satiny than soluble. Soon a tingly sensation comes on. Above and beyond than just the tingling, I can actually feel my lips getting fuller. Do they look any different? I can't say for sure. But I've been taking the brand's suggestion of using this lip treatment as a night mask and noticing when I wake up in the morning that they do feel more cushiony.
Verdict
I really enjoyed exploring the ingredients lists and learning more about wild native plants through the November Beauty Heroes and Alpyn Beauty. This box costs $58.95. Our three November products add up to $127. My favorite of the three is the Juneberry facial cleanser because of its gentle, soothing cleanse that leaves my skin feeling smooth. But the moisturizer and lip mask are tied at close seconds, and I can easily see myself stocking back up on any or all of these products when they're gone.
