Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of 5-6 handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment.
Note! As of October 2024, The Hygge Box has merged their Standard and Deluxe subscription tiers, so that only the Deluxe is available. This ensures even more value and a curated experience with every delivery.
The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Opening the Box
The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription is printed under the box lid, and the month's curation is packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper. Winter is when the hygge mentality really shines, and November was a wonderful warm-up to settling into the cold months. For December, we go deeper into the ways in which winter can be snuggly and festive at once.
Our monthly theme is "Winter's Embrace" and gives us a description for each category we can rely on: an element of light, a warm drink, an indulgence, and a decor piece.
What's Inside the December 2024 Hygge Box
Hygge Haus Winter Candle, 4 oz — Retail Value $16
Pine is absolutely, positively, no-questions-asked my favorite scent. Real or recreated, doesn't matter, it's so calming to me. This soy candle's cedar & cypress scent is a light, fresh take on it, and its simple jar and label are an uncomplicated visual to go along with it.
Mayana Chocolate Peppermint Hot Chocolate, 8 oz - Retail Value $11
I knew from the fact that this hot chocolate mix is from a chocolate company that it would be incredible. Not just a sugary mix, but a quality blend with unsweetened chocolate as the first ingredient. My family literally lined up. I didn't realize until I opened the bag that the "peppermint" aspect comes from crushed candy canes. I'm not always up for amending the texture of pure chocolate, but in this instance it absolutely adds. It makes the peppermint subtle and authentic, rather than artificial flavoring. We made our hot cocoa with whole milk and the outcome with incredibly rich and satisfying.
Ticket Chocolate Vanilla Bean Marshmallows, 3.8 oz - Retail Value $8.50
To go along with our specialty hot chocolate, we were sent handcrafted gourmet marshmallows. They're so pillowy! The pack came with five, and they're giant, so that's plenty! Again, so happy to peek at the ingredients list and see quality choices, like cane sugar and specifically, they're corn syrup free.
Just look at those beauts. They were really exciting to plop into our hot cocoa, too. Their sweetness complemented the richness of the chocolate nicely; otherwise, just taking a bite out of that thing was a little too sweet for our tastes.
Framed Yarn Tree
See similar here for $47.98 (currently on sale for $19.19)
Our element of light is this ever-so-sweet yarn tree affixed to a wood-framed canvas. It's all setup with fairy lights hidden throughout, so when you hit the switch on the back, it glows gently. It could be considered Christmasy, or even just wintry, but really it would be charming year-round. It's small but impactful, and it would make a wonderful hostess gift.
Hygge Haux Cozy Cuddle Throw Blanket
See similar here for $38
This blanket is unbelievably soft. It's throw size, but my kids are taking turns using it in bed because it's just so, so cozy against their skin. When not being passed back and forth by the little ones, I've been keeping it slung over my favorite cushiony rocking chair (which was my great-aunt's, reupholstered by my aunt, and affixed with its light blue cover by me so that I don't spill coffee on the upholstery!). Do you recognize the house mug from June? I sadly put a chip in it, but I still use it every day. The blanket and the mug together make this corner my favorite place to be.
Verdict
December with the Hygge Box means embracing the sweet quiet of winter with drinks, indulgences, and delights meant to make you feel like you're in the right place at the right time. It all so worked for me!
