What's Inside
Peet's coffee comes in a branded box with your 2 lb bag(s) of coffee inside. There's a receipt folded underneath. That's it—simple!
The Coffee
Off the Grid Medium Roast, Drip Grind (16 oz) — Retail Value $18.95
I first dipped my toe in the Peet's Bright Collection in October, when I tried the newly launched Sun Catcher Light Roast (see my review here). The idea of this 2-coffee collection is to feature more delicate and brighter flavors than the typical Peet's dark roasts. That one was the light roast and this Off the Grid blend is its medium roast counterpart. Its notes are of milk chocolate, almond butter, and pear—as always with beverage notes, how imaginative and abstract to my feeble layman's brain! And yet, I'm on an almond butter kick right now and I do believe I can sense it in the flavor of this coffee somewhere.
Whereas the Sun Catcher roast was so squarely a light-roast-lover's jammy, citrusy dream, this medium roast leans a little more in the direction of the true Peet's experience. It has a bite to it at the first point of contact on the taste buds, which I don't say in a negative sense—that's exactly what some dark roast lovers are looking for. It does brighten up as you sip. It's a really nice happy medium, and it has me thinking I might stock my dark-roast-people parents up with a few bags of this Off the Grid medium roast to enjoy when we're together.
Jubilant Blend Medium Roast, Drip Grind (16 oz) — Retail Value $21.95
Okay, now we're back to one of the classic line selections, and this medium roast has visibly darker grounds than anything from the Bright Collection. When you make it to the bottom of my review you'll see them side-by-side for comparison. It's not bitter but it's deeper in taste. It's a rich and toasty flavor for those who like black coffee. If you're someone who enjoys flavored creamer—specifically I'm imagining a peppermint mocha creamer I tried at a friend's house recently—this brew would lend itself nicely to a swirl of something extra. Or maybe a sweetened biscuit to snack on with it. Am I painting this roast to be a good afternoon coffee candidate? It seems I am!
This coffee is described as "Sweet and beautifully bright beans from Burundi meet nutty, aromatic Brazil." I can't think of a Burundi coffee I know and love. I see from a quick search that Burundi beans tend to be higher acidity and fruitier—ooh, this has me wanting to chase down some more African beans to try. Perhaps the Luminosa Breakfast Blend next!
Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $18.95-$21.95 per month per bag + free U.S. shipping with subscription.
After an exploration of Peet's light roasts in the fall, I enjoyed comparing two of their medium roasts this month. Now that I've had both coffees from their Bright Collection, I do declare I'm a fan of this line. The coffees from their classic line are better suited to those who appreciate darker roasts, as even the light and medium classics have qualities of a dark roast, but this Jubilant Blend is accessible to someone who enjoys coffee complexity.
The Off the Grid and Jubilant Blend cost $18.95 and $21.95 respectively, and shipping is free when you subscribe. That adds up to $40.90 total for 4 lbs of coffee. For a one-time purchase under $49, shipping costs $9, so that's nearly 20% savings by subscribing. When you subscribe you can choose whether to have your 2 lb coffee bag delivered every week, every 8 weeks, or anything in-between.
