TokyoTreat Review – April 2025

Becca Peterson
ByBecca PetersonMar 22, 2025 | 0 comments

TokyoTreat is a monthly subscription box filled with candy and other tasty snacks that ship directly from Japan. Savory, sweet, salty—all the flavors given to you with authentic products you would find in a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat ships monthly and includes full size premium products. With 12-17 treats in each box, they hit all of the flavor stops! More information about the snacks included can be found here.

This review is of the Premium Box which costs $37.50 a month + shipping.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

April is almost here, and so is spring! The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and I am one happy gal! But what made my mood even brighter was the arrival of the April TokyoTreat box, kicking off the month with a bang! Packaged in a beautiful purple box that perfectly captures the essence of cherry blossoms and spring, I had a feeling this one was going to be a hit. This fun-filled box arrived packed with fifteen snacks straight from Japan. With some TokyoTreat experience under my belt, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting subscription boxes I’ve ever unboxed—I’m definitely a fan! Keep reading to see what I discovered.

What's Inside the Box

To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️

Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!

Matcha Latte KitKats - Retail Value $5.99

We’ve been reviewing TokyoTreat for a while now, and one thing we can always count on is a big bag of fun-sized KitKat bars in a unique flavor each month! This time, we got a green tea and vanilla combo, creating an earthy, chocolatey mix. The bright green color made them extra fun, but the boys weren’t too keen on the matcha latte flavor. I’m not the biggest matcha fan myself, but I thought they were pretty decent—though I have to say, I’ve enjoyed some of the previous flavors a bit more.

Goodnight Grape Gummies

While the KitKats weren’t the boys' favorite this month, this gummy grapevine definitely was! With an intricate color and design, the green vine held clusters of purple and yellow grapes, making for a stunning gummy treat. The flavors were top-notch too, featuring classic purple grape, green shine muscat grape, and melon soda. Chewy in texture and absolutely delicious, we LOVED this snack! Please, please, please, TokyoTreat—send more of these in the future!

Strawberry Jelly Marshmallow

The next item we received was a large marshmallow strip filled with strawberry jelly. Our family loves marshmallows, and this version was a real treat! Sweet in flavor, the outside tasted like a typical Jet-Puffed marshmallow from here in the States, but the thin strawberry filling added a little extra fun. Overall, this was a tasty snack that we wouldn’t mind seeing again in the future!

Umaibo Mentaiko

With multiple sweet treats to start out the box, my oldest son, Hank, was looking for something savory. Perfectly timed, we opened this crunchy corn snack stick and discovered a spicy, savory flavor that offset all the sugar! Similar in shape to a large cheese puff, this hollow tube of a snack was crunchy, flavorful, and packed with mentaiko seasoning. Splitting it three ways, Hank devoured his share, Charlie took one nibble before handing the rest to Hank, and I found it tasty but not my favorite. Looks like Hank is the winner!

Sakura Castella Cake

The next item we received was a piece of Sakura Castella cake. This pastel pink cake was ultra moist and soft, with a sweet cherry flavor. While I typically enjoy cherry-flavored treats, this one reminded me of the Cherry Blossom fragrance from Bath & Body Works, and I just couldn't get past the strong floral taste. The kids also found the flavor a bit too fragrant and set it aside to see if Dad would like it instead. What generous children I have. 🤣

Sakura Sandwich Cookies

While the last Sakura-flavored snack was a bust, these Sakura-flavored sandwich cookies were much more our style. These crispy, sweet cookies are filled with creamy bean paste and were described as similar to a gingersnap in the booklet. I’d agree with that description—we found them warm, crunchy, and mild in flavor, making them a perfect pairing with a cup of coffee.

Sakura Matcha Wafers

Between the March box and this one, we’ve received a ton of Sakura-flavored items—it’s clearly a big hit in Japan! This particular snack combined Sakura and matcha flavors in wafer form. If you’ve read any of my reviews, you know I love wafers, but this version was a little too earthy for me. Beautiful in shape and color, these wafer rolls looked amazing, but the Sakura and matcha created an odd flavor combo that just didn’t sit right with me. Both of my sons gave them a try and immediately spit them out. While they weren’t terrible, they definitely weren’t our favorite, and I was a little bummed that the box included two packs. Oh well—win some, lose some!

Sweet & Sour Gummies

Phew! TokyoTreat redeemed itself for my boys with these sweet and sour gummies! We’ve come to realize that Japan has some of the best snack packaging, and this triangular-shaped bag was unlike anything we’ve seen in the States. Though small, it contained five heart-shaped gummies that were absolutely amazing in flavor. The three varieties—red apple, peach, and grape—were such a hit that the boys were practically fighting over them! My favorite was the apple, but honestly, all of them were delicious.

Springtime Senbei

The next treat we received was a package containing one large rice cracker. Packed with a honey soy sauce flavor, it had a taste similar to caramel popcorn, but with a puffed rice twist. Hank enjoyed the extra crunchiness, but Charlie thought it should have been softer. I thought it was decent as it was, but I would have preferred receiving two smaller ones instead of one large one for the sake of sharing.

Sakura Jelly

These Sakura Jelly candies definitely win the award for the most beautiful treat. Shaped like sweet cherry blossoms, these pink and white jellies have a yellow center and are covered in sugar. That being said, they really only taste like sugar. With a jelly center, they were very sweet but had little flavor beyond that. Underwhelming for how beautiful they were, these were definitely more for looks than taste.

Perfect Ponzu Soup

I love that TokyoTreat includes a full meal, and this month's version came in its very own cup. This tangy, umami-packed ponzu soup is made with chewy rice noodles and a fresh citrus soup base. While we haven't tried it yet, I have it packed in my bag for conference night at the school when I need to be there really late. It's an easy way to have a warm meal, and I look forward to the convenience of just adding water to enjoy!

Twilight Truffle Chips

My son Charlie was so excited to try the "truffles" that he asked if we could go out of order to give them a taste. I obliged, and the look of disappointment when we opened the bag was priceless. He thought this dark bag was filled with chocolate truffles instead of truffle mushroom-flavored chips, so he was quite let down! Since I instantly knew they were truffle-flavored chips, I was excited to receive them. I've had other versions before and enjoyed the natural salty flavor. This brand was no different and was packed with small, crispy bites that had the salty truffle goodness I love! Good for me, not so much for Charlie. 🤣

Strawberry Rice Puffs

The next item we received was a small package of strawberry rice puffs. Looking similar to an American cereal, these were extra sweet and had a slight natural strawberry taste that was just the right level of sweetness. The kids weren't impressed with the appearance of the snack, but the flavor definitely made up for it!

Butter Me Up Cracker

This month, there were multiple options for snacks 14 and 15. Snack 14 was this butter cracker. It was light, airy, and sweet, almost like it was dipped in powdered sugar, followed by a buttery flavor. It was an intriguing combination, and I thought it was pretty tasty, but Charlie disagreed.

Sweet Strawberry Chocolate Sandwich

The last snack this month was a strawberry chocolate sandwich. These pink squares are perfect for the upcoming spring season. The flavor of this cookie was a natural strawberry with a hint of sweet chocolate. A little light in flavor, I loved this cracker and actually didn’t share. Whoops!

The Verdict

As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, and after more than a few months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is my favorite snack box of all time. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I can say I am beyond impressed with this subscription. This month's curation was rounded out nicely with a good mix of sweet and savory snacks, and we enjoyed trying every single one, though we didn’t love all of the flavors. My favorite treat for April was definitely the Goodnight Grape Gummy, as the presentation and flavor were amazing, and I think the kids would agree. While we didn’t love everything, we only had a few duds, and statistically, that’s bound to happen. Overall, we were again impressed with the variety and fun packaging and are already looking forward to May’s box. Any ideas on the theme? Comment below!
