Birchbox is a monthly subscription box that sends samples (and sometimes full sizes) of new and exciting beauty products from top brands. Despite being out of the game for a minute, the subscription is back! Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes and is a great way to discover new makeup, hair care, and skincare products (four to six items every month) without breaking the bank.
This is one of our top recommendations if you are looking for a subscription box — the value and sample sizes are amazing. Just like Ipsy, Birchbox sends out many different variations of their bag each month — so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes).
First Impressions
Hi, friends! I'll be taking over with Birchbox reviews ever-so-briefly—Naomi will be back soon. This card highlights some of the products Birchbox is excited about this month.
Now, on to the items!
Earth Harbor Marina Biome Brightening Ampoule, 10 ml - Retail Value $13.00
Earth Harbor is having a moment, and I'm so here for it. Since it was founded in 2018 by an herbalist/toxicologist, it's been a brand committed to sustainability—it's a climate-neutral and plastic-negative brand, and every product is organic, vegan, cruelty-free, and free from synthetic ingredients. I've received at least a half-dozen Earth Harbor products through various subscription boxes, and I have LOVED them ALL. This serum can be applied solo before or after moisturizing to turbo-blast your face with its naturally derived benefits, or blended with your moisturizer. Its spirulina, blue tansy, seed oils, and squalane work together to create balance in skin tone, brighten, and energize. It smells great in a floral-fresh type of way, too.
Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream, 7.5 ml - Estimated Value $6.38
This tiny sample is packed with tons of goodness. It's described as a "high-potency face cream powered by B-L3™ that quickly improves barrier function to hydrate, boost radiance, and visibly plump and firm over time." It's going to target those fine lines and wrinkles, address loss of firmness and elasticity, and feel so darn smooth and hydrating along the way. It's technically scent-free but has a nice, neutral tone to its faint aroma—and, honestly, just the 5-or-so uses contained in this tube is enough to convince me that a larger tub would be worthwhile.
Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Restructuring Bond Repair Shampoo & Conditioner, 7 ml each - Estimated Retail Value $4.35
I think shampoo + conditioner samples are underrated, how about you? I deeply desire to try a variety of brands to see which shampoo works well with my hair, but there's no way I'm investing in full bottles just to find out. The scent of these samples is amazing, salon-quality blissful. The shampoo felt surprisingly drying at first, but the conditioner was mega-smoothing. They work well together; I don't think I would buy one without the other. I would consider buying full bottles from this brand—it's just that I personally feel like damage repair isn't my hair's main concern, so I'd be more likely to give their Volume Shampoo a try.
KNDR Beauty Eyeshadow Cream in Confident Copper, 0.14 oz - Estimated Value $25.00
No one would ever accuse me of being savvy with makeup, which is why I appreciate a single-color eyeshadow—I'm not adept with the layering and blending necessary to build a complex eye. But I do love some shimmer! And this copper color takes on the light in such a way that it's all at once moody, sparkly, and perfectly disco. The swatch on my arm shown above were applied with my finger—the color is really dense and dries smoothly without creasing.
Eyeko London Black Magic Liquid Eyeliner + Widelash, 0.3 ml - Retail Value $22.00
Years ago, before I gave any beauty boxes a try, I remember my friends having big opinions about black liquid eyeliner arriving in their subscriptions. I think the issue was just that they got way too many? When we were idolizing Zooey Deschanel and Kat Von D, some of us were determined to find that perfect smooth and lasting liquid liner, but now that the black cat eye isn't necessarily a daily wear we're less desperate. I personally don't have black eyeliner subscription box baggage, though! This is where I'll disclose that I missed the customization window for this box and so here I've received a curation that was selected for me. I was loyal to Stila for awhile, but this one is just as precise, super waterproof, and a little more matte. It's nice!
Sandbar Beauty Nomad Eyeshadow Palette, 0.25 oz - Estimated Value $26.00
Okay, I know I just got done saying eyeshadow palettes are lost on me, but this one is pretty fun. Each of the six colors have a fine shimmer to them, and the Rose Smoke and Desert Blush hues (the top two on my wrist) are so my vibe. These are classic pressed powder eyeshadows and don't go on as densely, which gives a nice alternative to the eyeshadow cream above. This palette is cruelty-free, vegan, paraben-free, non-toxic, and gluten-free.
The Verdict
This was my first exploration of Birchbox, and now I understand why this box has long been so beloved! As an Earth Harbor enthusiast, I was happy to try a new-to-me serum from their line; I was just as pleased to try the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide cream and the Alterna shampoo and conditioner samples. As someone who is drawn more to skincare than cosmetics, those were my standouts, but the eyeshadows and eyeliner are quality and will definitely be used for special occasions! I'll be back for next month's box with one more Birchbox review before Naomi returns, and I'll be curious to see if my own customization choices land as well for me as this surprise curation!
