TokyoTreat Review – May 2025

Becca Peterson
ByBecca PetersonApr 21, 2025 | 0 comments

TokyoTreat is a monthly subscription box filled with candy and other tasty snacks that ship directly from Japan. Savory, sweet, salty—all the flavors given to you with authentic products you would find in a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat ships monthly and includes full size premium products. With 12-17 treats in each box, they hit all of the flavor stops! More information about the snacks included can be found here.

This review is of the Premium Box which costs $37.50 a month + shipping.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

May is almost here, and the school countdown is on! While this brightens my mood all on its own, the arrival of the May TokyoTreat box helped to really kick off the month with a bang! Packaged in a bright orange box that brings cheer everywhere it sits, I had a feeling this one was going to be a hit. This fun-filled box arrived packed with fourteen snacks straight from Japan. With some TokyoTreat experience under my belt, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting subscription boxes I’ve ever unboxed—I’m definitely a fan! Keep reading to see what I discovered.

What's Inside the Box

To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️

Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!

Salted Caramel KitKats - Retail Value $5.60

We love KitKat bars, and this month’s version was absolutely decadent. Featuring layers of rich chocolate and salted caramel, they struck the perfect balance between sweet and salty. The classic wafer crunch added that satisfying texture we all love, but this version felt like a major upgrade from the original in all the best ways. It was indulgent without being overwhelming, and every bite had us going back for more. My husband, kids, and I were thrilled—not only by how delicious they were but also by the generous quantity included in the box. Let’s just say these didn’t last long!

Peach Paw Candies

The peach paw candies were a huge hit in our house! Shaped like adorable puppy paws, they were incredibly sweet with just the right touch of tartness. The kids couldn’t get enough of them, and we all agreed they reminded us of a gourmet version of a “Smartie.” Fun, flavorful, and super cute—these candies were a delightful treat!

Vegetable Animal Crackers

The Vegetable Animal Crackers were a fun and tasty surprise! Made with juice from 22 vegetables and 3 fruits, they’re a healthy snack that doesn’t sacrifice flavor. The variety of animal shapes made them extra fun, especially for the kids. A unique and educational twist we loved is that each cracker has the animal’s English name printed right on it—so clever! Nutritious, playful, and delicious—these crackers were a big win in our book!

Melon Panda Cookies

The Melon Panda Cookie had a very unique shortbread texture with a distinct melon flavor that was a bit unexpected. Sweet and slightly citrusy, it wasn’t a combo I’d normally reach for, but it was okay overall. The kids loved the adorable embossed panda design, though they probably would have preferred a more classic chocolate or vanilla flavor.

Animal Unchoco

OMG, did we love these! The “pooping” animal Unchoco candies were a hilarious and adorable twist on classic chocolate treats, with a fun grape flavor that really stood out. They reminded us of a playful spin on American M&Ms, but with even more personality. The packaging was absolutely the best—we couldn’t bring ourselves to toss the box because it was just too cute to part with!

Grape Paw Gummies

Next up were these Grape Paw Gummies. They were a fun and flavorful treat with their adorable kitty paw shape and eye-catching two-tone design. The grape flavor was surprisingly sophisticated—more like a hint of merlot than your typical candy grape, which I really enjoyed as an adult. It felt like a more refined gummy, perfect for a grown-up sweet tooth. The kids weren’t as into the flavor, but I happily claimed their share!

Terrific Tiger Konjac Jelly

The Terrific Tiger Konjac Jelly had a fruity flavor with a mango pudding vibe that was definitely unique. Made from konjac, an Asian root vegetable, this was packaged in individual packets for multiple tastes. As someone who’s particular about texture, I found it a bit off-putting and a little too slimy for my taste. That being said, the packaging suggested freezing it for a firmer consistency, which I might try next time. It’s definitely an adventurous snack—just not quite my favorite as-is.

Lucky Giraffe Mayo Curry Chips

The Lucky Giraffe Mayo Curry Chips were a deliciously bold and unique snack! Shaped like large curds, they had a subtle mayo flavor paired with a spicy curry kick that kept us reaching for more. Both the kids and I loved the savory, addictive taste. It was a fun twist on traditional chips and definitely left us hoping TokyoTreat will send these again in the future!

Fiery Fox Radish Bites

These Fiery Fox Radish Bites definitely take the prize for the most unusual snack we’ve tried. Pickled and soaked in soy sauce with a bold chili pepper heat, they packed a serious punch. The flavor wasn’t terrible, but the super strong smell was a bit hard to get past. Overall, they were an adventurous bite—fun to try, but probably not something we’d reach for again.

Black Bear Peanut Balls

The Black Bear Peanut Balls were absolutely delicious! Coated in a sweet and spicy soy sauce, the crunchy texture was a perfect balance of salty and flavorful. Charlie loved them so much that he devoured almost the entire package in one gulp, leaving just one for me to try—and I definitely could have used more!

Chocolate Monkey Biscuits

The Chocolate Monkey Biscuits were a delightful treat for the whole family! These chocolate biscuits, filled with creamy milk chocolate, offered the perfect combination of rich and smooth flavors. The added vanilla wafer gave them a nice crunch, and the adorable chocolate monkey design made them even more fun to enjoy. Everyone in my family loved them, from the kids to the adults, and they disappeared quickly! They’re the perfect little indulgence when you’re craving something sweet and tasty.

Chocolate Panda Cake

The Chocolate Panda Cake was a delightful treat, similar to a Swiss Cake Roll but with its own unique twist. Charlie absolutely loved the chocolate-coated sweetness and, despite devouring most of it, kindly saved me a bite to try. It was deliciously moist and perfectly chocolaty and paired perfectly with a glass of milk.

Quattro Cheese Puffs

The Cheese Chips were absolutely delicious, offering a deluxe Quattro cheese flavor with gouda, camembert, mozzarella, and cheddar that was rich and satisfying. They had the perfect crunch and a deep, savory taste that set them apart from regular cheese snacks like Cheetos. Plus, the generous package size made them perfect for sharing—or for enjoying all on your own!

Tanuki Yakisoba

We love receiving ramen noodles, though my kids usually shy away from the seafood varieties. Since I have students at school who enjoy these flavors, I decided to bring this package to school as a reward for one of them. After trying it, they gave it two thumbs up!

The Verdict

As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, and after more than a few months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is my favorite snack box of all time. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I can say I am beyond impressed with this subscription. This month's curation was rounded out pretty well with a mix of sweet and savory snacks. While we didn't love 100% of the included snacks this month, we didn't absolutely hate anything which is statistically pretty good! Overall, we were again very impressed with the variety and the best packaging we've ever experienced! We're already looking forward to June's box, and the fact that summer is almost here!!! To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 5/15.

Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 14 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.57 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
