And every year, gyms are filled to the gills on January 2nd (let's be real...does anyone actually go to the gym on the 1st!?), only for the crowds to dissipate just a few weeks later. However, as of late, it seems like people are determined more than ever to keep their New Year's resolutions and achieve their goals. And there has been a multitude of fitness app subscriptions that have exploded onto the scene to help anyone looking to do just that.

But which ones are actually worth checking out? Well, everyone is different and what works for one person, might not work for the next. But, we created a list of the ones that have piqued our interest or ones we have personally tried and know to be good!

Fitness apps have taken over the online world and it is easy to see why. They are a great way to get in shape without having to leave your house and make it easy to work out when you are on the go. The best part about these? They use zero to minimal workout equipment, which really makes them an accessible and inclusive option for anyone willing to give them a go.

There are literally dozens upon dozens of these subscription-based fitness apps out there with more popping up every day. These are just a few of the top ones and also ones that are a little unique and offer different features.

1. Apple Fitness +

About this Workout App: Apple Fitness + syncs up pretty much your entire life with the ease of a button and gives you access to over 3,000 workouts and meditations.

This is a super user-friendly fitness app which is probably the biggest perk to subscribing to Apple Fitness +. Just head over to the app on your Apple device, then choose your workout and your music. The Apple Watch will do the rest.

One of the best features is the ease of putting your workout onto your Apple TV and then being able to watch your heart rate and progress in real time without having to look down. Your workout information which is monitored by your watch will be shown on the screen. This is great for someone who is looking to stay within a certain heart rate zone!

You can even grab a group of friends and take a class together without ever being in the same room while encouraging each other (or commiserating with each other!). Workouts range from 5-45 minutes and include up to 12 different types, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Choose from kickboxing, strength training, HIIT, yoga, core training, mindful cooldown, pilates, dance, cycling, treadmill run, walk, rowing, and even meditation.

Obviously, the biggest downfall to Apple Fitness + is that you have to have an Apple device to use it. So, it does limit who can join. I myself, do not own an Apple Watch or iPhone (I know, I know, I'm a heathen), so it does feel a bit clique-ish. But if the program helps others to get in shape and reach their goals, then I'm a fan of the little white half-eaten fruit...even if they won't let me into the club!

2. Obé Fitness

About this Workout App: obé Fitness brings the workout to you with their easily accessible on-demand videos and live classes daily. Not all of us live in a big city with lots of gym options. And even if we do, a lot of times in-person gyms will only give you one free class to try out.

I don't know about you, but one class has never been enough for me to really figure out if I enjoy something or not. This app gives you the option to work out at 3 am when you can't sleep or the option to plan ahead of time and enjoy a live class from top fitness instructors.

Classes are usually 28 minutes long, although a few of the high-intensity classes tend to run a bit shorter (mercifully!). You can choose from a ton of different workout options such as cardio boxing, vinyasa yoga, sculpt, HIIT, bounce, barre, dance, dance HIIT, power, pilates, ride, and strength. Try them all or just stick to your favorites! They also offer already curated programs if you have a goal in mind, but are not quite sure how to get there.

There's even an online Facebook group where you can share stories, offer encouragement, and just chat with fellow obérs.

3. ClassPass

About this Workout App: ClassPass is more of a marketplace for gyms and studios, where owners can sign up to be listed on ClassPass. This can be anything from the local gym around the corner to a major brand-name gym.

The great thing about ClassPass is that you can use it wherever you go to find unique fitness classes that may not have otherwise been available to you. It is not limited to specific brands!

Head downtown and do Parkour one day and then try out aerial yoga the next! Or head to the fancy hotel that has that great view and work out for an hour before grabbing a dip in the pool.

ClassPass uses a point system that you subscribe to and then you use those points to grab gym time or a class at one of your local fitness spots. Points do roll over, but only the monthly amount you subscribe to and only for one month. The rest are based on a use-it-or-lose-it design.

Until you sign up, you are also unable to see how many points it takes for classes and gyms in your area, which makes it hard to figure out if Classpass is right for you. However, they do offer one month free for new members, so you can check it out during your trial period.

About this Workout App: Wish you could have Kayla Itsines as your personal trainer? Well, now you can! SWEAT was founded by Kayla Itsines and is one of the best workout apps for women, by women.

It has both workout plans and meal plans, which as we all know eating right is a huge part of fitness! The biggest draw for this app is that SWEAT has workout plans for the gym. Most apps are based on at-home use, but many of us need that extra boost of encouragement that gyms can give.

You actually choose a program instead of an individual class and then you can see all your upcoming classes within that program. So, if you are looking for strength training, you will choose that program and then have carefully curated classes three times a week. This really helps to take the guesswork out of which class you should choose next in order to obtain your goals.

Combined with the meal plan, this is a great option when you don't want to think about what to do and just be told what to do! SWEAT also offers low-impact programs for anyone that is just starting out or has an injury that they need to be careful of.

The biggest drawback is the price. SWEAT will currently run you $19.99/month which for an app does seem to be a bit high. If you choose a gym program, this will also be on top of your monthly gym membership. So, use the free trial to make sure it's right for you!

About This Workout App: Packed with a library of more than 185 workouts ranging from 15-60 minutes absolutely free of charge no matter whose sneakers you wear, there is no reason to not check out Nike Training Club. Routines featured in the app focus on bodyweight-only sessions, yoga classes, targeted training programs, and full gym equipment workouts for all fitness levels.

With studio-style streaming and expert tips from its elite Nike Master Trainers, the Nike Training Club app is a great resource that comes without a price tag. Also be sure to check out the Nike Run Club, which makes a great companion for joggers and marathoners alike.

About this Workout App: Core Power Yoga On Demand is a great fitness subscription for people who know what they like and what they like happens to be yoga and meditation. They have gyms across the country in over 200 locations, but their on-demand and live-stream membership is a popular option. A huge bonus to an app like this is that it is specialized, so they have a laser focus on workouts and do that area very well.

The Core Power Yoga app has classes and videos that range from five minutes to an hour. The shorter classes are usually meditation or "break it down" videos to show you how to do a position step by step. With both instructional videos and beginner basic classes, this app is super accessible to anyone from the pro to someone who has never been to a yoga class before.

About this Workout App: XPASS is a boutique gym lover's dream fitness subscription. We all know boutique gyms can be extremely expensive. More so than many larger gyms that even offer similar classes within them.

The smaller, more intimate settings are not just a great workout but also a social scene where many end up making friends and encouraging each other along the way. However, usually, the prices of these gyms make it difficult to be a member of more than one. And yet, changing up your workout and routine is actually one of the best ways to keep your body in great shape. Enter XPASS!

XPASS is a fitness membership subscription where each month you receive points. The amount of points you receive depends on the membership option you signed up for. You can then use those points to take classes at nine different boutique gym brands. These brands include Club Pilates, Pure Barre, CycleBar, YogaSix, StretchLab, Row House, AKT, STRIDE, and Rumble.

Most classes will run you anywhere from 5 to 15 points, however, a few like StretchLab can be a bit pricier and range from 25-40 points per class. Along with your membership, you also get up to a 70% discount on drop-in class rates, so a great way to use this is to use your points for the classes that use up fewer points and then use your discount for any additional pricier class options.

The biggest downfall to XPASS is that your points are only eligible for 7 days into your new month. This is fine if you intend on using them monthly, but if you have a vacation or just a busy month in general, you will lose those points if you don't use them. This also limits what the most affordable plan can get you into since you are unable to save and accumulate points. Be sure to check your area's classes to see how many points will make it worthwhile to sign up.

8. Xponential+ Pure Barre

About this Workout App: If you haven't jumped on the Barre bandwagon yet, you might be wondering what in the world Barre even is. Basically, it is a mix of yoga, pilates, and ballet. Pure Barre also puts an emphasis on strength training, so is a bit different than other barre classes.

Be warned though, this is not an easy class. It will have your muscles shaking (#embracetheshake) and your heart racing. This is the kind of class you do when you want to get strong, and I mean really strong.

I personally have a membership to a Pure Barre gym and absolutely love this workout. You use tiny muscle movements to make huge changes to your body. (My butt has never filled out my jeans better than when I'm doing Barre!) Pure Barre has thousands of gym locations around the country, but they also have an online membership option through Xplus called Purre Barre GO. This is a fantastic option if you don't have a gym in your location or just can't make it at the times offered.

XPlus Pure Barre offers on-demand workouts that you can do anytime, anywhere. You technically do not need any equipment to do these classes, however having done classes both with and without equipment, I would recommend buying a few small items. Grab a set of 2lb or 3lb hand weights, a resistance band, and a barre ball. This will really help you to up your barre game at home. If you want to go even further, you can also buy a set of sliders and ankle weights.

About this Workout App: Aaptiv is a great fitness subscription app if you just aren't one of those people who enjoy looking at screens while you are working out. The Aaptiv app is all audio-based so it allows you to pick and choose where you want to work out, but still brings the high-intensity dynamic that you get with more visual-based apps.

Want to go on a jog by the river? Turn on the Aaptiv app and you will have a curated workout designed by fitness professionals that help you to get the most out of your jog. Too cold outside and prefer to stay on the treadmill? A fitness instructor will be in your ear telling you when to turn up the speed and when to take a rest depending on what you are trying to get out of your workout. And these are just two of the 2500 audio-guided workouts they offer with 40 new classes added each week. Your workout, on your time, and in your favorite spot. No screens required.

To me, this sounds like the perfect fitness app. Looking at screens always makes me kind of dizzy if I'm also trying to move along with it. However, there are some drawbacks to the only audio-based app.

If you choose a yoga workout and are unsure of the way to position your body, you can stop it and watch a quick video tutorial, but this messes with your flow (literally). If you are lifting weights, you are also going to want to make sure you are doing it correctly as to not injure yourself, so you may need to watch the tutorials in order to get the form correct.

However, once you learn it, your workouts should be much easier and more personalized for you.

In a nutshell? I'm a bit of a walking contradiction!

I love traveling the world and stepping out of my comfort zone, but I can also be a complete introvert and will be totally happy hanging out at home with my family for days on end. I enjoy working out and going for runs or HIIT classes at the gym, but I also have no problem binging on a bag of cheetos and a glass of wine (which pairs surprisingly well together!). I love how I look dressed up and ready to hit the town, but am much more comfortable in a pair of sweats while watching The Mandolorian with my husband and two little boys. I love trying exotic foods and the different spices and textures that come with it, but my all-time-favorite meal is a juicy cheeseburger with fries. 

So, maybe I should just call myself well-rounded!? Whatever it is, I keep an open mind about everything and am always on the hunt for a new and exciting adventure!

I have to mention Les Mills because I just love Body Combat. A mixed martial arts class. They have it all from HIIT to yoga and more. I used to do the classes in person but since 2020 discovered you can access and buy on-demand. Lots of great stuff.

I was waiting for Fitplan to be mentioned. It’s my favorite fitness app of all time. They have home & gym workouts, pilates, pregnancy-safe, and lots of stuff even for men.

I love that it’s more than one trainer and more than one plan, and I often switch between different plans. Helps if I don’t like a particular trainer or am not feeling up to another leg day lol.

I’ve been loving Lia Bartha’s B the Method. She does pilates workouts and puts together a weekly schedule to follow. She has three or four new workouts a week – two are live.
