BoxyCharm by Ipsy Review – October 2024

Stick around to see what goodies (or not-so-goodies) made their way into my box and my brutally honest take on each one.

This month’s BoxyCharm by Ipsy promised all the spooky vibes with its ‘‘beauty nightmares’’ theme, perfect for Halloween. But honestly? The box was more of a yawn than a scream. Still, stick around to see what goodies (or not-so-goodies) made their way into my box and my brutally honest take on each one.

BoxyCharm by Ipsy is a $30 monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. It always provides great value compared to the cost of the box and includes 5 beauty items, including nail care, skincare, makeup, haircare, fragrance, and more. (At least 4 of those items will be full-sized.) If you are a makeup or skincare addict, we recommend this box!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Right off the bat, I appreciated the smaller box this month. Why send a massive package for just a few items, right? Everything arrived in tip-top shape—no spills, no breakages—so at least they’ve got that part down. But the excitement ends there. I’ll explain why in a second.

What’s Inside

Ciate London Dewy Skin Tint – Retail Value $32

Shade: 020

Okay, first off, the shade? Way off. I’m normally a 040, but for some reason, they sent me 020, which clearly does not match. Setting the color aside, let’s talk formula. It’s supposed to be a lightweight, semi-sheer tint, but… it’s like borderline-foundation thick. You need a teeny amount to avoid looking like a cake. Safe to say, this one’s a miss.

Repurchase value? Absolutely not.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – Retail Value $38

Um... where did this come from? It wasn’t in my picks nor listed as part of my box, but hey, no complaints here. This is a cult classic for a reason. It’s rich, it’s hydrating, and if your skin’s been feeling ultra dry, it’s a lifesaver. Technically, it’s safe for your face, but I personally love it as a body cream—your elbows and ankles will thank you.

Repurchase value? Yes, please.

Tarte Blush Tape Liquid Blush – Retail Value $36

Shade: Pink

This blush is cute... but also kinda meh. The pink shade is pretty with a nice shimmer, so if you like a little glow, it’s got that covered. What’s cool is the sponge applicator has an on/off lock—genius—so it won’t dry up on you. The downside? You need to slather on a lot to get any color payoff, so I’m not sure I’d splurge $36 for this.

Repurchase value? Ehh, 50/50.

Dalish Cosmetics Lip Scrub – Retail Value $18

Another product that seemed to appear out of thin air. But, I love a good lip scrub, so I wasn’t too mad. It’s your standard sugar scrub with coconut oil and cocoa seed butter—nothing groundbreaking. It works, but be cautious if you have sensitive lips because it can be a little too rough. At the end of the day, it gets the job done, just not in any extraordinary way.

Repurchase value? Nah.

Seraphine Botanicals Diamantine Beaming Highlighter – Retail Value $29

Shade: Oyster

Finally, a product that surprised me in a good way! This highlighter is subtle but still gives you that pop, especially for my skin tone. It’s a bit on the powdery side, but nothing a spritz of setting spray won’t fix. Plus, I’ve never tried anything from this brand, so it’s always fun to explore something new.

Repurchase value? Maybe!

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $30

Value Breakdown:

  • Ciate London Skin Tint: $32
  • First Aid Beauty Cream: $38
  • Tarte Blush: $36
  • Da lish Lip Scrub: $18
  • Seraphine Botanicals Highlighter: $29

Total Value: $153

Takeaways

So, in terms of sheer value? Sure, it was worth it. But in terms of joy? Not so much. Out of my 3 picks, two were swapped out without any notice, and my Beauty Boost selection? Totally MIA. See below...

The theme was ''beauty nightmares,'' and well, I guess it’s fitting because this box felt like a bit of a letdown. I mean, it’s October—where’s the bold Halloween fun? Where are the colorful eyeliners, dramatic lashes, and statement lipsticks? Instead, we got... this. It’s starting to feel like they’re just throwing random products into the box with zero curation.

Am I the only one feeling this way? Did you get everything you picked?

Other Things You Should Know

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Nope. If you sign up today, your first box will be from the next curation.

It doesn’t sound like you actually got your box. Could it be that they sent a generic box for review and yours is still coming ? Otherwise, if this is your actual box, Ipsy/Boxy have gotten even worse than i thought.

I think they sent over a generic box with their picks this time. I emailed them, and the customer service rep was very helpful. Eventually, I received my box with my picks. But I agree, the disappointment of getting things that I didn’t ask for was a tad annoying.

I’m still waiting for my box to arrive, but I also have that setting spray on my list, so I hope I get mine. It’s really refreshing to read a review on here that is so blunt and honest. I’ve had many mix-ups like yours over the last year and it is disappointing. Especially when we’re not alerted or given a choice to choose something else. Just because they replace it with something of the same cost value does not mean we actually value it the same. I love the concept of ipsy but how many mistakes like this can I invest my money in before I feel ripped off? Without the mistakes, I absolutely love ipsy. Fingers crossed I have better success with my box. Thanks for the great and honest review!

Best of luck with your box! And yes, I agree. I love the fact that we get to pick certain items because…how many primers or mascaras can I have? The whole idea of this box is to try NEW things. And when they send their picks instead of mine, it feels like a waste of product. I had to give most of these to friends because they literally didn’t suit me.

Personally I loved the dewy skin, gave a good amount of coverage and like the name a healthy dewy glow. I was actually really happy with my entire box this month

Maybe if it arrived in my shade, my thoughts would be different. To me, that one didn’t feel right. But I’m happy you liked it!

so it’s not just me….I swear sometimes I also open my box and think…I really picked this? I also got the dewy skin and agree…too much or not enough.

That’s why I started taking screenshots of my picks! Because more often than once, I feel I didn’t pick half of the items in it!
