Deciding if Weight Loss Medication Is for You? Here’s What To Know

Let’s be honest: weight loss journeys aren’t all OS (one size). Each person’s situation is highly unique, and it can feel near impossible to know the best route to take. What’s the root cause of my weight? Do I have health complications as a result of my weight? Is prescription medication for me?

The best game plan for you is one that’s tailored, but you don’t have to go at it alone. Sunrise’s doctors will match you with a prescription weight loss medication, and they’ll create a personalized program for you to meet your goals.

Here’s what to know about weight loss medication:

Give it to me straight. What is Sunrise in a nutshell?

Simply put, Sunrise is a weight-loss program led by affiliate board-certified physicians with the goal of helping you on your journey. No fluff. No grandiose promises. Just doctors caring for individuals who are wanting to be healthier.

If you meet Sunrise’s eligibility requirements, you will first have a doctor consultation where they will review your current situation and medical history to pair you with a weight-loss medication to address your unique biological needs.

After you start your personalized program, you’ll be able to contact clinicians at your convenience, and ask a doctor whatever questions you have during check-ins.

I like that, but where do I even start?

First, determine if you meet Sunrise’s eligibility requirements. Currently, Sunrise is available to individuals who:

  • Are between 18-64 years old
  • Live in the USA
  • Aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a BMI that’s >30, or >27 with one or more of the following metabolic conditions: diabetes, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea or PCOS
  • Do not have an active substance abuse problem, an active eating disorder, cancer, recent bariatric surgery (within the past 18 months), active gallbladder disease, a history of pancreatitis in the past six months, or a history of medullary thyroid cancer.
  • Other restrictions may apply at the provider’s discretion

When you start with your doctor-led consultation, everything happens from the comfort of your home, which is super convenient and relaxed. During the consultation, you’ll share about yourself and about your medical history so that they can help you create a unique plan to suit your needs and goals in the program.

Based on your medical history, a physician may provide you with a prescription that can address your needs, while Sunrise works in tandem to reduce your co-pay.

What are some of the possible medications?

The medications that they may provide include GLP-1s as well as other clinically proven weight loss medications. All of these medications are non-habit forming and have been clinically-tested. Sunrise has access to over 7+ weight loss medications including Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Mounjaro™, Saxenda®, Contrave®, Naltrexone/Bupropion, and more.

Does the process take forever to see a doctor like IRL?

Nope. There’s same-day doctor visits available AND prescriptions available, too.

Keep it real. How expensive is this, really?

Pricing is insurance-dependent, but GLP-1s for most members with commercial insurance typically cost around $25/month after any deductible is met, but it may be higher. However, because cost can be a blocker, if you do not get coverage, Sunrise also offers alternative medications for weight loss such as Naltrexone/Bupropion, starting at just $39 per fill.

And if for some reason your insurance won’t cover the cost of the meds, you can either simply cancel your Sunrise membership or pay for the medication out of pocket (with options starting at $39/month and ranging as high as $1,600/month, depending on the medication). And while the Sunrise membership cost isn’t covered by insurance, it is HSA/FSA eligible.

But does it work?

Yep! As we know, results always vary. Yet, according to studies, members on a semaglutide-based intervention lose on average 15% of their body weight.*.

*Individual results may vary.
