Lots of folks experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. When I noticed my hairline thinning, I opted to go bald—only to find out maintaining a bald head is no cakewalk.
I learned (the hard way) that a good head shaver is worth its weight in gold over traditional razors and messy clippers. When my old head shaver gave out, I decided to try two newer models from brands that some of my buddies recommended: Freebird and Skull Shaver.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been putting Freebird’s FlexSeries Shaving Kit and Skull Shaver’s Pitbull Silver PRO Shaver head-to-head (get it?).
Read on to find out which head shaver I’ll be sticking with to keep my dome clean and stubble-free:
Best for a Fast, Baby-Smooth Shave… Freebird
Both the FlexSeries Shaving Kit and Pitbull Silver PRO come with a flexible attachment designed to contour to your head, but I found the Freebird offered the quicker, cleaner, and closer shave of the two.
Freebird features five, flexible, ScalpSafe™ blades that glide across my head like butter. More impressive still is that it only took me around 90 seconds to completely shave my head.
It may be because of the powerful 8,500 RPM motor in the FlexSeries, but when it comes to the quality of the shave, I think Freebird has an edge over Skull Shaver.
Best for Convenience and Easy Cleaning… Freebird
When it comes to convenience, there are lots of reasons to go with a dedicated head shaver over a traditional razer or set of clippers. I found both Freebird and Skull Shaver had a lot to offer here.
First, both of the shavers I tried are certified IPX5 waterproof, meaning you can use them in the shower or use them with shaving cream or shaving oil for a “wet shave.” Both head shavers also draw hair trimmings into a compartment that you can easily rinse and clean out after you shave, meaning you can shave anywhere without creating a mess.
I like to shave my head in the shower, and because of Freebird’s rubber grips and more ergonomic design, I found it easier to use while wet—but since both products offer similar benefits here, I’m calling this round a toss-up.
Best for Battery Life… Skull Shaver
Freebird has the same 60-minute battery life as Skull Shaver’s Pitbull Silver PRO shaver, which is pretty great!
If you need more battery life than that, Skull Shaver offers pricier models that boast battery life up to 90 minutes.
While I get by fine with 60 minutes of battery, I can see how some extra range could save your grooming routine in a pinch if you don’t get to charge your shaver often. If you really hate charging your device, and you’re willing to pay hundreds extra, then Skull Shaver wins a point here.
Best for Value and Versatility… Freebird
In this category, there’s no competition. Skull Shaver’s Pitbull Silver PRO starts at a hefty $89.99 when you subscribe for blade replacements (which costs an additional $22.49 every 90 days).
Freebird’s FlexSeries Shaving Kit, on the other hand, costs just $39.95 with the current 60% off promo they’re running. You can also subscribe for blade refills every 4, 6, 8 or 10 weeks for $19.95 per refill (and save 20% when you’re on a subscription).
For me, this deal is a no-brainer, particularly considering Freebird’s kit arrives as an all-in-one grooming solution with their ScalpSafe™ blade, a Precision Clipper (plus 3 adjustable guards), a Nose & Ear Trimmer, an Exfoliating Brush, and a Scalp Scrubber.
The Pitbull Silver PRO only comes with a contouring head blade, but you’ll have to buy any other attachments separately—so Freebird takes a major point here for value and versatility.
And the Winner Is… Freebird
Some of these categories were close, but I found that Freebird was hard to beat in terms of price, quality, and versatility. It’s literally half the cost of Skull Shaver for a better deal.
On top of all that, Freebird offers a lifetime warranty and a 100% money-back guarantee if their kit doesn’t work out for you within 30 days. Given my experience with the FlexSeries Shaving Kit, I think it’s unlikely you’ll need to take advantage of either.
If you’re looking for a complete grooming tool to help keep your scalp, face, and beard as handsome as can be, definitely give Freebird’s FlexSeries Shaving Kit a try!
