If you’re frustrated with lackluster hair, it might be time to change up your products.
As a self-proclaimed haircare junkie who loves testing all sorts of cleansers and conditioners, even I’ve been there. After a recent bout of the hair blues, I asked my friends for some hair care recs—and two brands rose to the top: Hairstory and Oribe.
I’ve spent the past few weeks trying both to see which actually lived up to the hype. Here’s my assessment:
If you want to simplify your routine… Hairstory
When I heard that Hairstory’s New Wash was an “all-in-one” cleansing cream that washes, conditions, and detangles, I was more than a little skeptical. The last thing I wanted was a glorified 2-in-1.
But after the first wash, I was impressed.
My post-shower hair was moisturized, detangled, and (most importantly) clean. All I had to do was wet my hair, apply the same amount of New Wash as I would shampoo and conditioner, work it into my hair from roots to ends, let it sit while I wash my body, and rinse—that’s it!

I was honestly shocked by how effective Hairstory’s New Wash was. Considering that it’s about the same price ($41.40) as any store-bought shampoo, conditioner, detangler, and hair mask combined, it’s actually a pretty good deal.
Oribe’s Signature Shampoo and Conditioner, on the other hand, cost about $49-52 EACH, and I still need a leave-in product for extra hydration…
If your scalp needs a little TLC… Hairstory
Here’s a fact I learned recently: Most shampoos are packed with harsh detergents that over-clean and strip your scalp of its natural oils, leading to irritation and increased oil production—a vicious cycle that never really solves the problem. For me, this meant my roots would quickly become greasy. However, for others, this might manifest as dryness or flakes.
As far as traditional shampoo and conditioner go, Oribe was nice enough, but it simply didn’t address my hair and scalp health in the long run. Even though the immediate effects were nice, I still had to wash and condition my hair every few days to prevent it from getting greasy.
With Hairstory’s New Wash, I got a detergent-free formula that balances natural oil production and promotes a healthy scalp by deeply cleaning and moisturizing without causing grease. As someone who’s struggled with greasy hair, this is the only cleanser that has actually balanced my scalp and made my hair feel truly clean.
If you like to shop in person… Oribe

I, for one, love the comfort of shopping from my couch—but if you prefer to shop in person, then you can conveniently find Oribe’s Signature Shampoo and Conditioner at your local Sephora next time you’re treating yourself to some new haircare and beauty products.
If you find yourself out and about often, that’s definitely an added layer of convenience!
If you prefer clean ingredients… Hairstory
I’ve been on a clean ingredient kick lately. That’s why I love that Hairstory’s New Wash is made with natural oils like Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Evening Primrose Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Lavender Flower Extract to balance my scalp’s PH, remove excess dirt and oil, and moisturize.
Since using New Wash, the buildup I get from my styling products is gone, and my hair feels softer and bouncier. My frizz also feels like it’s finally under control, which is a huge plus now that summer (read: humidity) is right around the corner (IYKYK).
BONUS: New Wash is also biodegradable + the pouch is recyclable! Better for your hair, scalp and as well as environment!
While Oribe’s Signature Shampoo and Conditioner come in pretty bottles and feel luxurious, the long ingredient list on the back doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence.
Your hair NEEDS Hairstory’s New Wash

Both Hairstory and Oribe are high-end brands that are a cut above what you’ll find at your local drugstore, but that doesn’t mean they’re equal.
While Oribe’s Signature Shampoo and Conditioner removed grease, they still over-stripped my hair of essential moisture, which only led to greasier hair a few days later.
Hairstory’s New Wash, however, has been a genuine game-changer. Even after 3-5 days, my hair still feels perfectly balanced and moisturized. Hairstory says New Wash is a perfect, color-safe fit for all hair types, including oily, dry, and thick hair—which must be the reason behind their 423,000+ positive reviews.
If you’re looking to cleanse and moisturize your hair without stripping it of its natural oils, Hairstory’s New Wash is the product for you! If you order directly from their website right now, you can even save 10% off refills when you subscribe.
What are you still doing here? Your dream hair awaits!
