Shibumi vs. Tommy Bahama: Which Sun Shade is Superior?

There’s nothing that can make or break a beach day quite like an umbrella. Picture this: you’ve just found a perfect piece of real estate…but you’re sitting on hot sand, directly under the blazing sun. And beach lovers know there’s nothing more annoying than an umbrella that’s heavy, topples over, and provides little shade.

In my quest to find the best sun shade, I pitched two in the sand: Shibumi’s “Shibumi Shade” and Tommy Bahama’s “ANCHORX™ Easy-Set-Up Umbrella”. Here’s how they compare: 🏖️

If you want the whole group to get shade… Shibumi

The biggest problem with your average umbrella? You need at least 2 or 3 of them to cover a group! The Shibumi Shade ($270) expands to cover 150 sq ft, or 4-6 people. It’s enough shade for my entire squad, plus beach towels and snacks. Gone are the days where getting shade requires “taking shifts.”

Unfortunately, our ANCHORX™ umbrella provided shade for 2 people comfortably, but not any more. It’s usually more than just me and my S.O. on a beach day, but if there’s only two of you, the Shibumi Shade Mini ($190) is perfect for 1-2 people. 😎

If you don’t want to wrestle with the wind… Shibumi

One of the coolest things about the Shibumi Shade is its “Wind Powered®” design–no matter how windy it is, it stays perfectly afloat. And, it needs just 3 mph of wind to stay afloat! Since the Shibumi Shade doesn’t have a rigid structure, it can’t fly away or tumble down like most standard umbrellas. Plus, it’s just 4 pounds–even my youngest kid can carry it comfortably.

On the other hand, the Tommy Bahama ANCHORX™ umbrella was no match for the wind. Even though it has a stabilizing base, it kept toppling over. Nobody wants their heavy umbrella to come crashing down on them, so Shibumi won big here.

If price is a factor… Tommy Bahama

Tommy Bahama’s ANCHORX™ Easy-Set-Up Umbrella costs $89.50, which is a respectable price for a quality umbrella.

The Shibumi Shade costs $270, but for me it’s worth it because it shades up to 6 people. Since most average umbrellas only shade 1-2 people, I’d have to buy multiple, which would end up costing as much as a Shibumi! The Shibumi Shade Mini costs $190 if you’re in the market for a smaller option.

The Shibumi Shade was also designed to be anti-throw away culture. So, where many umbrellas need to be replaced yearly, the Shibumi Shade was designed with high-quality so it lasts for a long time.  It’s an upfront investment, but you’ll get to enjoy it for plenty of beach seasons! 🌊

If an easy set-up is a priority… it’s a tie

I was surprised at how easily I could set up the Shibumi Shade by myself. All you have to do is connect the poles, thread it through the canopy covers, and plant it so it’s facing the direction of the wind. Just fill the bag with sand, and snap the straps for security, and voila!

Of course, “easy set-up” is in the name of Tommy Bahama’s umbrella, so it was a swift process, too. It did take me extra time to ensure it was properly anchored, though.

If you want to get extra sun protection and save the planet while you’re at it… Shibumi

Not only does the Shibumi Shade provide shade, but it also protects your skin with UPF 50+ sun protection. The Shibumi Shade is also made from ocean-bound recycled plastic–knowing I’m helping to preserve the ocean while I enjoy it feels fitting!

The ANCHORX™ umbrella provides UPF 50 protection, and Tommy Bahama partners with organizations to enhance their sustainability efforts. Personally, I feel that Shibumi takes efforts further by recycling plastics for use in their shades.

My verdict? It’s Shibumi for me

After taking the Shibumi Shade for a test drive, I can say that the full potential of my beach days haven’t been realized until now! Our entire group is covered, it’s user-friendly, works with the wind, and is sustainable, too. It’s easy to see why the Shibumi Shade has thousands of 5-star reviews ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, but don’t just take my word for it–upgrade your outings with Shibumi!
