Geek subscription boxes and fan subscription boxes are tough. There's always a chance you're either not going to know, or not going to totally love the treasures inside. I wish I was one of those generalist geeks who has an encyclopedic knowledge of all the world's most fantastic fictional universes, but I'm more of the type that has a handful of subjects that I love very, very deeply. That unfortunately means I'm subject to subscription box disappointment if the contents aren't in my wheelhouse. And that's the apprehension that was swimming around in my head when I opened up this month's Fandom box. And then this happened...

img_0100-e1473825663498

This is when I let out a resounding "OH, HECK YES!" so loud my upstairs neighbor probably heard it. Lord of the Rings is 100% my bag, and I could not have been more delighted to know that the contents of this box would be all about my favorite books of all time. And get a load of that info card. They made "Fandom of the Month Club Member" look like elvish script! Genius!

img_0103-e1473825733575

On the reverse side of the card, the Fandom of the Month Club provided all of their info and shouted out the crafty minds and artists that make this monthly box possible. Not only do these geeks have great taste, but how fantastically punny are those clever Twitter handles?!

Frodo Magnet - Value about $2

Minimalist design is the calling card of Half Blood Prints, who created this simple, rectangular magnet. The colors are cool, yet woodsy, and while it's not 100% my style, this magnet is definitely going to live on my fridge forever, just because of the hobbit. It's not going to hold anything much more substantial than a photo or a grocery list, but the design will make for a fun conversation starter the next time I have fellow fans over for dinner.

The star of the show, of course, is the bag full of fan-focused jewelry. Each month, this subscription box creates a screen-printed muslin bag that's unique to the theme at hand. This month, the bag features a little illustration of Frodo's door and some wise words passed from Bilbo to Frodo Baggins in moss-green ink. And inside, there are three treasures—a bracelet, a necklace, and a very clever set of earrings.

Not All Who Wander Are Lost Compass Necklace - Value about $30

I love this quote, and I really love how it appears alongside this delicate depiction of the fellowship. This brass necklace can't be much more than an inch in diameter, and it sits at the end of a long, clasped chain. Press the button at the top of the pendant, and it pops open, revealing a compass.

Not all who wander are lost, but just in case you are, this compass necklace should come in handy!

Crystal and silver bracelet - Value $15.95

img_0112-e1473646873838

This beautiful bracelet is modeled after Arwen Evenstar's pendant. It's flexible, so that you can comfortably fit it to your wrist. It's a sturdy, quality bracelet for the price point of this box, and it catches the light beautifully. It's not a blatant reference to Lord of the Rings if you aren't familiar, so even if you don't like or know the books or movies, you could still enjoy adding it to your special occasion jewelry collection.

One Ring Hoop Earrings - Value $49.99

img_0116-e1473647432185

I'm so thrilled by these earrings, which are standard hoop earrings engraved with the elvish script on the one ring. They're the perfect way to subtly show off your fandom in an everyday outfit. They're not real gold, but they have a lovely, shiny yellow-gold finish.

Verdict: As a jewelry lover and a Lord of the Rings devotee, I adored every bit of this box. The items are of good, solid quality for the price point of the subscription, and they're super unique whether you're looking to be loud and proud about your fandom or give a subtle nod to the geekery you adore. That said, if this was for another fandom, I might not have been so thrilled. But if you surround yourself with geeky pals, this would be a great source for gifts for friends, if not for yourself

This box is AMAZING and I would have loved to have gotten it! Guess I shall just stalk the swap site for now :/

My only complaint is that the value estimations are WAY off. Most items are exclusive to this box, and the owner sells similar pieces in her shop for about $8-11. The quality is also not super high, and although she posted on Instagram that she designed the earrings, they are definitely not worth $50 (for starters, none of the metal is tested to ensure that they are nickel free, items are made in China, etc). The value is still there, though (closer to about $30 for a $13 box).

HOWEVER, this review was much more positive than the July box and a more optimistic review. I’m a big FOTMC fan, and I’m looking forward to the September **RUMORED** Pokemon box!

Great review! I enjoy looking at this box every month and they never fail to impress me with what they send out at this price point even if its not in my geeky wheelhouse so to speak.

Does anyone know if I would get this box if I order now? I’d really like to get this box but the website doesn’t say anything about which month you receive when you sign up. Thanks!

Nevermind, I just realized this review is for the August box. I was assuming it was the September box…
