Trunk Club for Women Subscription Review – March 2017

Trunk Club is a clothing styling service for both women and men. Similar to Stitchfix, subscribers fill out a detailed style profile which, in turn, your assigned stylist uses to handpick clothes, shoes, and accessories. There is a $25 styling fee which is credited towards whatever you decide to keep.

The quality of this box is incredible! It looks like a suitcase trunk and is made of thick cardboard. There's a handle at the top of the box which was great when carrying the box around my house.

Trunk-Club-March-2017-2

Trunk Club is a Nordstrom company, and they send similar brands that range in the $75-300 range. In the style profile, you can choose your preferred price range for each category (ie. $50-100, $100-200, or $200+)

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

My box arrived with a packet of info and shipping materials for anything I decide to return.

Trunk-Club-March-2017-0003

When I originally completed my style profile, I was matched to a stylist, Kaley. In January, we discussed my profile and I shared her on my Pinterest board for style inspiration! Since this is my fourth trunk, I chatted Kaley that I wanted to order another box and she sent me a preview of what she curated. At that point, I was able to remove items I already had similars of or that I didn't foresee wanting and replacements were included.

Here's a list of what was sent, along with pricing if I decide to keep anything. They also sent instructions of what to do next, including providing Kaley feedback using their app. You are given five business days to try everything on and ship back whatever you do not want to keep. You can also ask for an extension if you need more time.

Trunk-Club-March-2017-0005

On the back of the booklet is instruction for returning the items I don't want to keep, along with a prepaid shipping label. I can drop my box back off at any UPS location, or I can schedule a free pickup through the Trunk Club app or website!

Kut from the Kloth Connie Ankle Skinny Jean - Cost to keep: $89

I love these jeans! I am so happy Kaley included these as a denim option because I probably would have passed these by in a store. They are a high-quality light wash stretch denim and ankle length thanks to the frayed hem. They have a mid-rise but feel comfortable where they fit on my waist. I was also surprised to see they are only $89 - I was expecting them to cost more for this brand.

Jeffrey Campbell Purdy Sandal - Cost to keep: $139.94

I paired the denim with a beautiful pair of Jeffrey Campbell sandals. Kaley can send me Jeffrey Campbell in every box - I love this brand so much and willing to invest in their shoes. However, sadly, these aren't going to work. The heel is a great height, but the front strap is really tight. So tight, that they're uncomfortable when standing still, let alone walking around.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0002

Trunk-club-march-2017-0003

The denim has the perfect distressing and I feel like this wash is kind of the new white denim trend that was big a couple years ago. They are my new favorite pair of jeans for spring and summer!

Trunk-club-march-2017-0004

Trunk-club-march-2017-0006

I really wish these sandals could have worked out. There's great color blocking happening with cream leather at the toes that transition to brown at the heel. The ankle strap has a durable velcro too.

Kendra Scott 'Rayne' Stone Tassel Pendant Necklace - Cost to keep: $80

Jewelry is a first for my Trunk Club boxes! I have always been a fan of Kendra Scott and this pendant and tassel necklace is really pretty. The pendant is made from an ivory mother of pearl flat stone, set in gold. And just below the pendant, small gold chains suspend as a tassel. There's a nice weight to this necklace as it hangs about 31" in length.

Socialite Pocket Tank Dress - Cost of keep: $34

I received one dress this month and it is a lightweight 96% rayon/4% Spandex blended knit. I like this a lot more after trying it on. I wish it was a little longer and the v-neck was a bit more modest, but it's an easy piece for summer and I like how it's a bit tented with pockets.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0007

I paired this olive dress with the Kendra Scott necklace, Jeffrey Campbell sandals, and the faux leather leggings I kept from my first Trunk Club. I love this look overall and feel more comfortable wearing a legging with the dress.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0009

Love the pockets!

Trunk-club-march-2017-0011

Here's a closer look at the necklace's pendant and tassels.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0012

Zella Yama Wrap Top - Cost to keep: $59

Another first for Trunk Club! They sent two pieces of activewear. The first is a 85% polyester/15% Spandex layering top from Zella. The correct size was sent, but it is uncomfortably baggy on me. The front is a blouson wrap, but it is only stitched together at the hem, which leaves a potential gapping opening. And the back is super loose and just looks too big on.

Zella High Waist Gemini Crop Pants - Cost to keep: $55

The second I like much more! These pants are very comfortable and provide a lot of support in the waist and tummy. They are a bit pricier than I typically spend on workout gear, but they're on par with Fabletics.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0016

I absolutely love the symmetry the cream color blocking creates! This material is a lightweight breathable mesh and a nice contrast to the rest of the pant. The length of these pants is great too.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0015

One great feature on the wrap top is the thumb holes I've come to expect in better quality activewear.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0018

Free People 'Beach Cocoon' Cowl Neck Pullover - Cost to keep: $68

After seeing this top in the preview Kaley sent, I really thought I would like this more. I could see this being another option to pair with the Zella leggings, but the fit is too baggy. And the crazy part is the size sent is actually an XS/S!

Paige Denim 'Hoxton' High Rise Ultra Skinny Jeans - Cost to keep: $134.25 on sale (regular price $179)

I like that Kaley sent me two contrasting denim options and pointed out that these are on sale (sale prices are noted on your invoice). These fit really well and the high rise is perfect. However, they're too long, although not totally unexpected for a high-end brand. However, for $134, I am not motivated to keep these, knowing I will have to have them tailored.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0020

There's a panel of heathered gray cotton on the back, which you can also see on the rolled hems throughout the top.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0019

The fabric is a thick heathered blue cotton which is really pretty and in my opinion worth the $68. But the fit is a deal breaker for me.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0023

Here's a closer look at the length and scrunching that occurs since I'm 5'4".

Trunk-club-march-2017-0021

And here's a look at Paige Denim branding on the back pocket.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0024

Free People Hudson Tank - Cost to keep: $58

I really like Free People, but I found both pieces in this month's Trunk Club to look sloppy on, due to sizing. This top is a 70% rayon/30% linen blend and described as a loose silhouette, but it's just big and unflattering on. I like the asymmetrical hemline and front buttons, but I don't love these details enough to keep the top for nearly $60.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0026

Trunk-club-march-2017-0027

The gathering on the front and back yokes do not accentuate my curves in a way that is flattering.

Trunk-club-march-2017-0025

I do love the idea of a tented silhouette for summertime, though!

Trunk-club-march-2017-0030

Trunk-club-march-2017-0031

Steve Madden Getdown Sandal - Cost to keep: $59.95

Last up are these fun slip on sandals from Steve Madden. They are super comfortable and I like the ruffle details, but unsure about the metallic gold. I don't currently have a lot in my wardrobe to coordinate with these, but do think they would be a great addition to my summer closet!

Verdict: This was my favorite Trunk Club to date! Kaley is wonderful to work with each month and I sense she truly cares about helping me find pieces I'll love. I am definitely keeping the Kut from the Kloth denim and considering the Zella pants, dress, and Steve Madden sandals. I think that's the most I've ever considered before! For the $25 styling fee, I feel Trunk Club is an easy process start to finish, and a low-risk way to discovering high-quality brands and trends.

You really do a fabulous job with these reviews. Those color block shoes and necklace are so perfect. I’m 5’11 and live vicariously through others with clothing subs. The distress denim reminds me so much of my pairs of gorgeous Guess jeans in the 90’s.

Thanks so much, Monique! Yes, the Kut from the Kloth denim are definitely a throw back to the 90’s which is fine by me 🙂

Wow how many items did they send you? This looks really cool and your reviews are amazing…. I am new to the whole stylist shopping for me thing… I got my first fix from Stitch Fix like a month ago and when I opened it up I was so shocked at the stuff my stylist picked for me. She couldn’t of even looked at my Pinterest board that took me hours. I was pretty clear as to what I wanted…..super duper clear and I’m still shocked.. It was that bad that I told CS and they waved my next stylist fee which was cool but when I got my second fix I thought the stylist fee would be taking off my first item but no…. They just wave the box being sent.. I just thought the to go hand and hand. I said I wanted a do over, but if they gave me my 20 dollars back and then when I got my next fix they would of took my 20 dollars again and if I bought something it would come off…. I still think that wasn’t right but….
Anyway I asked for a new stylist and when I opened the box I was so happy… I could tell that it was made for me and that she looked at my board and read my notes…. It’s all on stylist and you being clear on what you want. Sorry about the book. I just feel ya when you were talking about your box….

Hi Beth – they sent 10 items this month which is pretty standard. I agree with you about the importance of the stylist and Trunk Club takes their styling and consultations very seriously. I haven’t been able to speak to my stylist at Stitch Fix but do know with Trunk Club, they are willing to set up a call to chat, etc. It’s really great customer service (which is important knowing you’ll be investing more money in the higher end brands Trunk Club offer).

OMG, that necklace is amazing!

I received that Free People cocoon top from Trunk Club about a year ago (in grey). It’s oversized on me too, but I love it with just a bit tucked into the front of a pair of skinny jeans! It’s also great to wear around the house on the weekend.

If you are a Nordstrom card member, the $25 fee is waived. So there is no risk.

OMG!! Loving trunk club. Been subbing with stitch fix maybe a year now but my stylist left , and its been challenging to get a great box. I tried cypress and fifth once and was very disappointed in quality and sizing when compared to sf. Golden tote clothes never appeal to me. But this looks perfect!!! Kendra scott- check! Kut from the Kloth- check! Light distressed and frayed hem denim – check! High end clothes at sale prices- check!!
I liked the review quite a bit too. Just wondering if the $25 styling fee can go towards an item you keep like with sf. Sure thats covered. I will reread/research this sub!! Just what i needed- more sub boxes to spend my money on lol. It certainly does become addictive, but its also such a convenient way to “shop” when you are a busy person 😉😊

Hi Stephanie! Yes, Trunk Club has a lot to offer 🙂 To answer your question, the $25 styling fee does get deducted from anything you decide to keep.

Stephanie

Thanks 🙂
I actually did already sign up for trunk club and my first box is on its way. This was a really great review. I even requested those kut from the kloth jeans you had and they are able to send them to me. This will replace sf for me. I am loving that i can preview the items before th box ships. I did not like about 5 of the items and so she replaced them with something else. I am now thinking of ordering my husband a trunk shipment as well since they have mens.
Thanks again!!

Nan

I love the gold sandals! I could wear those with almost anything: skinny jeans, shorts, or a dress.

Sara McClelland what are the shoes you are wearing? The red ones I have seen you in a few times. Where did you buy them what brand are they how much? I love them would like them in cream

Reply ButtonReply

Sara McClelland

Hi, Kimberly! The red shoes are made by Rovers. The color was exclusive to the boutique I found them in, so I’m not sure of the brand’s other color options.
