3.4 overall rating

The Nina Garcia Quarterly subscription box sends out fashion and beauty items about once a quarter. (Quarterly's shipping schedule isn't always every 3 months.)

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

(Everything comes wrapped in Nina’s hashtag paper).

The Subscription Box: Nina Garcia for Quarterly

The Cost: $99 a box plus shipping

The Products: Items hand selected by Nina Garcia!

Ships to: Everywhere (US $8, Canada $30; rest of world +$40)

Check out all of our Nina Garcia Quarterly Box reviews and the Women’s Subscription Box Directory!

Each Quarterly box comes with a letter from the curator describing the theme for that quarter, and background on every item they selected.

For this box, Nina focused on sustainable fashion and beauty items. (August was also Marie Claire's first sustainable-focused issue.)

Now, onto the items!

Prana Stevie Hat - Value $45

(Colors will vary)

I have a few similar hats like this one from subscription boxes, but this is definitely my favorite. I love the shape, and it fits my big head! 🙂

(It's 100% wool, too.)

And if you don't want those straps showing, you can just tuck them into the hat before you put it on.

And Prana also included a coupon for 15% off your next order!

I was a Sari Upcycled Bracelet - Value $22

(Colors will vary)

This bracelet is really unique: it's made from upcycled Saris! "Hand-cut strips of fabric are twisted and knotted to create a textile sculpture."

It really does look like wearable art! And it's impressive to have a bracelet that is both structural and soft.

It was easy to stretch over my hand, too.

TOME White Eco-cotton Wrap Top - Value $225

(This is an exclusive design for the Nina Garcia box, but it is similar to this top.)

Wondering how this is a "top?"

Not that I would wear it in public, but for review purposes, I attempted the wrap top. No luck - the fabric isn't long enough for me to be able to tie it. (For reference I'm usually a size medium/large 6/8.)

But, I gave it a try as a belt!

It's crisp, clean, and can add structure to outfit. I like it as a statement belt, but to be honest, I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of it. (This is a definitely an outside-my-comfort-zone fashion item!)

Any suggestions on how to style it?

Loving the hat, though! Here's a closer look at the bracelet:

Now, on to the beauty goodies!

Nina included a 20% coupon code to Musely.com - a site that is all about natural beauty items.

Musely Hydrogel Eye Mask - Value $4

These eye mask gels are designed to be worn overnight! I toss and turn in my sleep, and I feared waking up with these in my hair, eyes, etc. so I opted to wear them just for 20 minutes.

What I liked about these eye masks is that one side is covered in fabric, so you don't have to touch goopy gel! They stayed on easily and were super refreshing, too.

Natura Brasil Castanha Hand Cream - Value $19.50

This is a new-to-me brand and I'm loving it! The formula is free from: parabens, sulfates, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, PABA, petroleum, triclosan, DEA and animal ingredients.

This is a rich cream, so a little goes a long way - this tube should last me months! (And it dried to a matte finish, too!)

Savannah Bee Beeswax Heel Balm Stick - Value $14.50

I've used Savannah Bee lip balms before, but this heel balm is a new discovery. It's made with organic ingredients and has a light, spearmint scent. (You can use it on any dry skin area, too. Not just for feet!)

Verdict: This box has a value of about $330. I think that's great for a $107 box, especially for a Quarterly box. However, a large percentage of that value is coming from the wrap top/belt, so this box may be a miss for anyone who isn't loving that piece. (Basically, you received about $105 worth of items for $107 if the belt is a no-go for you.)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? I've reached out to Quarterly to ask. I'll update when I hear back. (You can also email [email protected] to ask about any of their boxes and cut off dates.)

Coupon – No coupon available for this subscription.

Value Breakdown: At $107 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Hat: $14.60
  • Belt/top: $72.95
  • Bracelet: $7.13
  • Eye Mask: $1.30
  • Hand Cream: $6.32
  • Heel Stick: $4.70

What do you think of #NGQ10? How are you going to wear the belt/top? (Also, thank you to everyone who commented on the original spoiler post for this top - I loved reading every single one of those comments!)

Hi Liz, do you know when is the next box due out? I love Nina, but the last box was not a good one, I really hope the next one will be much much better. xoxo

I’ve been wondering the same thing! It’s almost the end of May and it still hasn’t released.

Nina did have a miss with the “white thing” last box, but overall her box is what I look forward to the most. When is the next one due out??

This was my first Nina Garcia box. And may be my last. What a terrible assortment of ridiculousness! Really! I am so disappointed.

Was excited to receive my very first NG box – boy, was I ever DISAPPOINTED. Not sure what she was thinking with the nun scarf – it might fit Twiggy, but this is America where lots of girls are a little fluffy. UGH Absolutely hated the white thingy

Did love the hat – very cute!

Very VERY disappointing box. That “top” is awful, but add insult to injury that it seems like it should go in a summer box. I’d say top 5 strangest items in a box. On a positive note I’d love to have the heel stick. 😊

I can use the “top” to holster one of my ta-tas, now what do I do with the other one?

My daughter made me a bracelet very close to the one in the box. It was out of plastic cording but since she’s only 7 I’ll let it slide. /sarc. Really not a fashion piece IMO.

Liz, So glad you model everything (as best you can) from these boxes. I’ve been curious about that hat because it got good reviews on the website. It looks great on you, and So I may seriously think of getting it after seeing it on you.

Re: value of the top. I’m just wondering whether that top was really marketed to those who are way above our pay scale … those who usually buy ‘stuff’ like that. I have noticed that some of these eco- or organic cotton clothing items are much more expensive than what I would ever price them. But because they are eco- some people gladly pay that price – maybe in the hopes of contributing their bit to the environment??? And yes, I really think that if someone came out on Project Runway with this that she would dismiss it out of hand. I think now that she included this because it fits with her ‘natural’ theme and…maybe show her bonafides in the industry that she’s eco-friendly. I do like the other products, but this piece of cloth is really …. (fill in the blank).

I think she did a huge disservice to the entire concept of eco-fashion and sustainability! This box is a train wreck and insulting to subscribers, especially since so many people were honestly excited when the box’s “theme” was initially announced.

And you are spot on with your take on her comments on that top/wrap/rag. I can hear it now in her disapproving, semi-nagging voice. “I’m so confused. It’s a plain white *bed sheet* tied into a top! We’ve seen this a thousand times before. There’s nothing special about this – it’s not *fashion* and very few women could wear this. We gave you a budget of $225 and this is what you made? Sorry, this is just a ‘no’ for me.” LOL!

Yes, the hat is cute but the color isn’t guaranteed and it can be found almost anywhere and probably for less.

Epic fail – worst NGQ box ever…

Oh. My. Goodness. 💀I read that in her voice and it’s spot on! I can tell you watch it as much as I do. 😝 Thanks for the chuckle.

nope nope and nope.

Candace

The bracelet reminds me of Regina George telling Cady she liked her bracelet when she really hated it.

Reply ButtonReply

AMH

Maybe try it as a scarf?

Reply ButtonReply

Laurie

Utterly ridiculous. You’re a size 6-8 and the “top” doesn’t fit? The average American woman is a size 12-14. What was Nina thinking?

Reply ButtonReply

Susan

Exactly, makes me never want to ever buy this box 😡

This is a great review – very well executed! That being said, the box itself is not something I’d be excited to receive, and a far cry from some of their previous boxes.

I thought I might regret having cancelled this box but I fine with it. Just more stuff that I don’t need or want.

That top is absurd. What a bizarre decision. The hat’s kinda cute though.

I had a REALLY hard time letting this box go…I had been subscribed since like the third box and snagged the stuff I wanted from the first two on ebay and through trades. I had a feeling that it was time to let it go after giving it SO MANY chances and oh my, I am so glad I did. I would NOT have been happy spending $108 on this – not one item I’d be excited about. It’s really sad because when this box is done well, it’s amazing.

I’m usually not too hung up on “retail values” with these boxes, and like to focus more on whether I feel like I got my money’s worth. It’s hard to articulate what would feel like a rip off (you know it when you see it) but now I don’t have to: this is what not getting your money’s worth would look like to me.

Jane

Terrible value and uninspired selection. The scarf/belt/piece of cloth is a total miss and the rest of the items are pretty sub par for a 100 dollar box. Nina needs a sit down with Rachel Zoe for a long chat about curation.

Laura

No. Just no.

Kara

I love Nina, but this is so disappointing. I only like the beauty products and the bracelet. I am not really a hat person, and that top/belt is not something I would wear. (I’m not even sure I could wear it!)

Reply ButtonReply

Deanne

Nina is severely out of touch. This is like a $30 box.

Heather T.

I’ve never heard of this one before and I’m very intrigued but that price…yikes! I’m canceling Allure soon and I’m not going to renew Sisley once that runs out so I might have to wait and check this one out then!

Liz you are always so beautiful but I’ve noticed you look slimmer! everything looks good so good on you! ❤️

Excellent job illustrating how something that seems totally useless can be utilized well! You look very glamorous with the hat, dress, and belt, Liz!!

Not that I like that overpriced white rag but, if you must find a use for it, maybe wrap it around the hat as a band or wear it as a pocket hanky in a suit (after cutting it to fit).

Still, it is very sad when a sub box includes an item so few like, let alone can use.
