Snack Crate February 2018 Review
This box always greets you with a colorful card, and talks you through every snack to be found in this box! This month’s box is Sweden, and I’m really excited to try everything.
There’s also an awesome bonus in each boxes: stickers! These are so cool-looking, and the colors are the best.
Now, it’s snack time!
OWL Grill Chips
So I made the gigantic mistake of eating these when I was really hungry, and the bag disappeared fast! They had a wonderfully ridged texture and a rich flavor that was definitely savory but had the natural sweetness you would expect from an onion. Even though they were a fairly familiar type of snack, I don’t remember having any kind of onion chips as good as these before.
Sura Bjornar
Can we please talk about the hilariously grumpy bear on the front of this box? I’m obsessed with him! I’m not much of a fruity snack sort of person, so I was skeptical of these before trying, but they had such a great flavor! They were a perfect balance of fruity sweetness and a nice punch of sour, but they weren’t overwhelming in either direction. These teeny little bears took me way back to my childhood days at the community pool, chilling with my friends and a bag of penny candy.
Daim
Okay, confession time: while I certainly don’t think it’s the epitome of Swedish culture, I love Ikea. Seriously, my husband and I go there for lunch sometimes, and don’t buy a thing! This amazing candy bar is in a dessert there, appropriately called “Daim Cake,” and now I’m so excited to get the reference! This candy bar tastes a lot like a Heath bar, but the toffee-like layer is a little softer to the tooth and has more of a brown-butter flavor than its American counterpart. It’s not too sweet, but it’s rich, which is exactly how I like my dessert. I’ve only been taking a bite or two here and there of this candy, and it’s been oh-so-satisfying.
Cloetta Kex Bar
This crunchy bar was just two things: chocolate and wafer! I thought this tasted pretty good, but the chocolate didn’t taste quite as high-quality as other kinds I’ve had in these subscription boxes in the past. It was good for one bite, but I’m not sure I’ll get through two of these anytime soon. I might try it frozen, the way I like my Kit Kats.
Ahlgrens Bilar
Originally created by accident when the company was trying to develop marshmallow, these were chewy but still light, and they were sweet but didn’t really have much more of a flavor beyond sugar. I did love the shapes, though!
Marabou Oreo
I love Oreos, but funnily enough, I usually like them in something more than I like them on their own (though I’ve made an exception for the occasional sleeve of the super-thin coconut ones). I was not at all surprised to discover this candy bar was awesome, and I liked it a lot. I loved trying this out, and it’s interesting to me that this treat has just recently arrived stateside. I’m keeping this baby in the freezer so I can stretch it out over a few weeks!
Verdict: I love trying international snacks, and Snack Crate provided some familiar flavors in a new form! I loved those chips and the little bears, and it took some real effort to not eat that Daim bar in just one go. I love that this box goes all around the world for the snacks and that each new month is a surprise until it arrives.
