Trunk Club For Women September 2018 Review
My month’s trunk arrived to me in its Trunk Club trademark cardboard shipping box fashioned to resemble a suitcase. I am rather fond of the personalized details in their packaging, especially the note from my stylist and itemized invoice.
They include a pamphlet that provides product information, how to get the most from your trunk, and free shipping label and tape strips.
Here is a close up of the list of items I received and their costs.
Vintage Gold Velvet Tank by J.Crew, Size 20W - Retail Value $69.50 (found on sale here for $41.70)
I actually sent this as a suggestion to my stylist, Stefania, and she obliged me by sending this beauty my way! It is fall officially and I LOVE anything in mustard yellow or velvet, so this was a must-have. The top itself has limited stretch and has an inside liner. This piece is perfect for transitional Autumn weather, especially out where I live where we are still having eighty degree weather one day and fifty the next! This top also is a heck of a value and is rather versatile; I styled this top various ways for this review alone! It has gone on sale since I (foolishly) returned it, so I wrote my stylist to see if it could miraculously be sent back to me! Fingers crossed!
Royal Stripe Pencil skirt by RACHEL Rachel Roy, Size 3x - Retail Value $109
Another piece I absolutely hated sending back was this gorgeous striped skirt from Rachel Roy’s RACHEL line. This skirt is perfect for fall with its jewel tones and the gorgeous metallic copper threaded stripe. This piece has ample stretch and actually hit me at an ideal length! Stefania suggested I style it with the Lucky Brand velvet top, but I fell in love with how it looked with the velvet J.Crew tank. I styled this ensemble with earrings and a necklace from an upcoming CHC Vintage Accessories box review as well as shoes from Target’s Wild Fable line. This could translate to cooler weather months with a killer pair of booties, black turtleneck top, and a camel-colored biker jacket. I regret sending this one back too.
Haya Faux Snakeskin Hobo Bag - Retail Value $55
I often chat with my stylist, Stefania, about items I may be interested in for the next Trunk Club. When we discussed options for this month’s box, I told her how much I loved Topshop’s animal print items featured on the Nordstrom site. Unfortunately, Topshop doesn’t offer a full plus size range (get on it, guys!), but she did manage to find me this faux snakeskin bag by them as an option. The bag is so roomy! I love big bags, or suitcases as my co-worker often says, so I appreciate the size of this bag alone! I usually go for leopard, tiger, or zebra prints, so snakeskin is a bit of a departure for me! I loved how this paired so effortlessly against the Rachel Roy skirt and J.Crew velvet tank. It just topped it off perfectly! This bag looks great against different prints to add complexity or can be paired with solid colored dresses to take it from plain to wild in an instant!
‘Over It All’ Distressed Denim Overalls by City Chic, Size 20W - Retail Value $99.95
A few months ago, I reviewed another pair of City Chic overalls for my April Trunk Club review. Roughly five months later, my stylist sent me these adorable overalls to try as well. Unlike the April pair, these have a more traditional overall look with the thicker bib with utility pockets. There is also some slight distress details to give this pair a more worn look. I styled these with the ultra-versatile J.Crew velvet tank, but this could be worn in cooler months with a striped mock turtleneck top and sneakers for an adorable, yet comfortable weekend look!
Belted Plaid Skirt by BP, Size 3x - Retail Value $55
I love a good plaid skirt! I remember being in high school in the 90s and hunting high and low for the perfect plaid mini-skirt at my favorite thrift shops. Now, a plaid mini-skirt is a staple I expect to see in some variation each fall! This skirt looks fantastic on. It has limited stretch, but it does have an attached belt that helped me adjust the skirt’s fit on me to my liking. This is such a classic piece that I opted to style it two ways. First styling includes the immensely adaptable J.Crew top with my new favorite Wild Fable shoes and my tried and true faux leather biker look. I love combining cutesy pieces like a mini-skirt with a tough biker jacket. They perfectly contrast and complement one another.
The second styling includes same shoes and BP plaid skirt, but this time I have a ruffled short sleeve shirt and sunglasses from my most recent Pinup in a Pack review. This look with tights could be a great ensemble for the office and certainly can be worn after for a post-work happy hour!
Floral Spot Dress by City Chic, Size LW (20W) - Retail Value $99
Holy guacamole, this dress is charming as heck! This dress is incredibly flattering on-- I can’t get over it! The tie at the waist adds further definition and the v-neckline has a sweetheart cut quality. The print is fantastic and perfectly retro; I also love the shades of red against the greens and blues. The sleeves are even precious! This dress is great for summer wearing due to how light it is, but with a cardigan, tights, and booties this could easily be worn in the fall as well! I am kicking myself for not getting this one, but maybe another time!
Cutoff Denim Jacket by GLAMOROUS, Size 20W - Retail Value $99 (found on sale here for $59.40)
In theory, I love reddish orange anything--- especially a denim jacket! However, I did not like this one, not at all. I have had various GLAMOROUS brand items in my Trunk Club boxes, but the sizing and cuts are always off on me. The pieces tend to be boxy and oversized and I prefer a snugger, body-hugging cut. I also do not like the frayed bottom, it just looks sloppy to me. To each their own, but this jacket just was not my cup of tea. I styled the jacket with the City Chic dress to bring out the red in the dress. This jacket could look great paired with a lightweight striped sweater and light blue jeans for a cute casual ensemble.
Printed Velvet Top by Lucky Brand, Size 2x - Retail Value $59.50
It is Fall, so bring on all the fabulous velvet pieces. I have a rack of velvet dresses, skirts, and tops but there’s always room for more. I usually don’t wear purple, but I appreciate that this top has a printed design featuring gorgeous jewel tones in orange, pink, and turquoise. I also was surprised to see this was by Lucky Brand--- I had no idea they did plus size options! My stylist suggested I pair this top with the Rachel Roy skirt, but I much prefer it styled with my favorite ModCloth jeans, some lavender thread hoops, and gold flats! I also can envision this looking amazing with a mustard pencil skirt and turquoise pointy flats or heels to bring out the vibrant design on the top as well!
Floral Print Mock Neck Blouse by BP, Size 2x - Retail Value $45
I absolutely love a good mock turtleneck top. When you combine that irresistibly understated mock turtleneck with a bell sleeve and floral print--- I simply can’t say no! This is the one item I did opt to buy. I loved the retro look and feel of this top. I paired it with the same ModCloth jeans from before with my wooden Bad Sandy Heels, oversized sunglasses, and a vintage-inspired necklace from my latest Jewelry Subscription box (review coming soon!) for some casual Stevie Nicks vibes. I sense I will get a lot of wear from this top. In the office, I will pair it with a red pencil skirt and my Bad Sandy heels for a great 70s business casual inspired ensemble!
Verdict: Holy smokes, you guys, Stefania knocked this one out of the park. I wanted to keep the entire box excluding the GLAMOROUS jacket. If I had it in the budget, I would have definitely kept the J.Crew top, BP skirt, and the Rachel Roy skirt in a heartbeat. My stylist, Stefania, and I talked extensively via the Trunk Club app and I can tell that it resonated with her. This box definitely felt like she had me in mind. The app is definitely something that makes Trunk Club’s subscription service stand out from its competitors. Being able to communicate directly with your stylist by sending pics, links and messages is awesome! The top notch customer service and customization of this box make it a great value. I can’t wait to see what Stefania selects for my October box!

The cost of each item is listed alongside it above, but if I choose to keep anything, the $25 cost of the box’s styling fee would also be applied to the purchase. That’s an average $83.90 an item, which is on par with the brands included.
