Snack Crate "The U.K." Review
This box always greets you with a colorful booklet and talks you through every snack to be found in the subscription (at all levels)! This month’s box theme is U.K. I’ve had a lot of friends travel there for both vacation and job opportunities, so I’m pumped to see some of the treats that excite them on their trips!
There’s also an awesome bonus in each box: stickers! The stickers are always a hoot, and this month, I especially enjoyed the Buckingham Palace guard.
Nandos Peri-Peri Chicken Grooves
“Peri-peri” is Swahili for “pepper-pepper,” but not to worry, these chips weren’t too spicy! The “groove” cut listed on the package is actually my beloved “ruffle” cut, and they were more of a crunchier, kettle-cooked texture thank regular chips. And, oh, the flavor! I’m having a hard time explaining just how much depth of flavor went into these; there’s citrus, pepper, and an extremely savory chicken flavor that made these chips super-addictive. Just ask my husband - he devoured them!
Walkers Crisps
Oh. My. Goodness. According to the pamphlet, I could’ve received one of a number of different flavors, but I received the Smoky Bacon variety. These were ridiculously good. The smoke flavor was very present, but not overpowering, almost balanced by a sweetness, and while there was a little bit of a pork flavor, it was the successful application of smokiness to these that really makes me keep reaching for more. A flavor like this could’ve tasted overly fake, but these flavors were subtle and well-rendered. Walkers were also a lighter, crispier chip than the super crunchy, ruffled chicken ones, and this bag offered what I thought was a generous portion, with little air in the bag!
Crunchie
I originally considered sponge candy to be sort of the American equivalent to this chocolate-robed, honeycomb core treat, and I’m not a huge sponge candy fan, so I was hesitant to try it. Sponge candy freaks me out because it tastes a sort of burnt to my palate, and “melts” right away, which I find a little upsetting. However, I was pleasantly surprised here. The honeycomb core was much more firm, even “crunchie,” as the name implies, and had a nice mild flavor that was sweet but not overpowering!
Cadbury Twirl
The texture of these twin bars was really neat - I could really tell that the core of this candy bar was flaked candy! They were just comprised of chocolate flavors, but I thought it tasted good, and the twin bars reminded me of my favorite American chocolate - Twix!
Rowntrees Fruit Gums
Surprisingly, I have some experience with these candies called “gums” - my Canadian grandmother loved Wine Gums, which also hail from the U.K. These fruited ones from Rowntrees were harder in texture than other gums I’ve tried but had really exceptional flavor. The citrus and strawberry were both good, but my personal favorite was the black currant; it was juicy and had a surprising depth of flavor.
Maynard’s Basset Juicy Chews
These little treats really surprised me! I’m not a big fan of hard candies, but I thought these had a nice flavor. I liked that a few flavors were included, and the orange was my favorite. Orange candy can have a really unpleasant fake taste, but this almost tasted like grapefruit and was much more true to the actual flavor I’m used to. And of course, the “juicy” center was a nice textural surprise!
Verdict: I was excited to receive the U.K. box this month and it didn’t disappoint! I really liked both of the chips this month - they were great company for the Netflix watching the cooler weather encourages! I did enjoy both candy bars this month but definitely popped them in the freezer to extend my enjoyment of them. The real surprises this month were the fruit candies - the gums and juicy chews really brought a strong fruit flavor game to the box!
