Snack Crate "South Africa" Review
This box always greets you with a colorful card and talks you through every snack to be found in the subscription (at all levels)! This month’s box theme is South Africa.
There’s also an awesome bonus in each box: stickers! The stickers are always a really great addition to the box.
Bar One Peanut
This is the first of three chocolate bars in the package, and it’s nice to see full-size bars in this box. This was a tasty bar; I liked the Nestle chocolate, and the peanut-flavored filling had a great flavor, but I could’ve done with more texture. I would’ve loved to see some actual peanut chunks in this, to reinforce the flavors that were already present, and add another level of dimension to its consistency.
Lays Caribbean Onion and Balsamic Vinegar
A big difference in my snack preferences as opposed to my husband is my slight aversion to vinegar on potatoes! I don’t hate vinegar as an ingredient in other foods, but I would literally eat any other kind of potato chip than salt and vinegar. My husband loves vinegar chips, and he puts vinegar on his fries, too! When I opened these, he and I both thought I wouldn’t like them, but I really did! I think the acidity is nicely balanced by both the savory element of the onion as well as the sweetness that specifically balsamic vinegar provides. I would happily snack on these again!
Cadbury 5-Star Chocolate Bar
Chocolate, caramel, nougat, and crispy biscuits came together in this bar, but it still missed the mark just a bit for me! I think I just might not be the biggest fan of Cadbury chocolate, even though it usually has about double the cocoa solid content of American chocolate. It seems high-quality, but there was some aspect of the aftertaste that didn’t taste as good to me. I really did like the crunchy cookie bits in the middle of the chocolate center, though!
Nestle Tex Bar
I did not expect this seemingly simple bar to be so good, but it really was! Of the three chocolate bars this month, it was definitely my favorite. The texture from the wafers added a really nice crispy-crunch, and the layer of the light, bubble-textured, Aero chocolate in the middle really put it over the top for me. Nestle chocolate has a nice flavor; it’s creamy and not too sweet.
Original Champion Toffee Candy x 5
These little treats were different from any other candy I’ve had in awhile! Listed as “toffees,” I immediately tasted the molasses in these, which had a nice caramelization to the flavor, and while they were sweet, they had a good depth of flavor. They were really set and their texture was between a hard candy and a caramel.
Willards Cheas Naks x 2
So, I saw the words “Chicken Flavoured Maize Snack,” on these packages, and I had my doubts, dear readers, but as I usually am on my snacking journeys, I was surprised by how much I dug these treats! The chicken flavor reminds me very much of the savory herb mix found in Cup ‘O Noodles, and the texture is like a slightly softer Cheeto. I don’t know if this is making them sound good or not, but I really loved the incredibly savory flavor, especially one that wasn’t garlic or onion. I thought the pure chicken flavor was unique in a bagged snack like this!
Verdict: I had a good time on my snack adventure this month! It was a strong showing for the chocolate bar category; it was interesting to me to see the differences between Nestle and Cadbury chocolate, up close and personal! I thought the two savory snacks were super-solid choices; I could gleefully camp out on the couch in front of Netflix with either the Lays or the Chicken corn snacks. I also liked the toffee as a different category of snack to round everything out! I didn’t know anything about snacking in South Africa when I opened this box, but now I feel like I learned a lot of the flavors that are common in their treats!
