Slay Glam Box April 2019 Review
Slay Glam sends an info card each month with an itemized list of what’s in your box, including retail values.
Not included in the info, but I was able to choose one of the items I received this month (the shade of eye shadow kit). If you follow @slayglambox, the box curator enables subscribers to choose certain items each month by DMing, commenting or e-mailing their picks by a certain date.
Bellapierre Cosmetics Get the Look Eye Kit in Wild Forest - Retail Value $50
Bold and colorful eyeshadow makes my heart soar! Wild forest kit comes with all you need for a dimensional look, including 3 eyeshadows, a base, two shadow brushes, and a look guide.
The colors included in this kit are stunning; there is a bright lime gold, spring and forest green, all shimmers. Usually kits come with subpar brushes, but the all over shadow brush is quality! The angled liner brush is a little stiff but still perfect for applying shadow under the eye.
I was actually pretty impressed with the makeup base as well. It went on thick, and after patting it around with my fingertips, I was able to successfully blend it out. It stayed slightly tacky as I applied the shimmer shadows, helping their true colors pop.
Kit swatched left to right: Mineral eyeshadow base, Discoteque, Forest, & Reluctance
Cailyn Cosmetics Fix It Clear Liner- Retail Value $12, Listed Value $10
Fix It is a product used to transform eyeshadow or glitter into a smooth, easy to apply eyeliner. I really like the idea of this product, and it performs well. I tried this out with the deepest color from the Bellapierre eye kit, and it made a nice thin line. I use shadow as a liner all the time, which can just as easily be done by wetting a thin or angled brush, but I will use this product up.
Cailyn Cosmetics Face Modeling Contour Palette - Retail Value $68, Listed Value $52
I consider my makeup routine to be pretty simple, so a contour kit is pretty daunting for me. I’ve been known to contour my cheeks and nose on occasion, but most of the time it just seems like an unnecessary step. This contour kit includes 6 pans of contour colors, a primer, and a finishing powder. I used the darkest color to add a little chisel to my cheeks, the shimmery color to highlight my cheekbones and the peachy and lightest color mixed together to do some color correcting under my eyes, but other than those, the shades were not very workable for my skin tone.
Each cream has a thicker consistency but ends up blending into the skin really nicely. I also used the primer under my eyes and the finishing powder to set my t-zone; I can’t say the primer or powder really did anything to elongate the wear of this product. The price of this palette seems very steep considering the simple packaging, but if you’re looking for an array of colors in one place, this might appeal to you. Update: the areas I used these cream colors broke out into tiny bumps, so maybe this is not a great product for acne-prone, sensitive skin.
Cailyn Contour Duo Brush- Retail Value $24
Dual-ended brushes are so handy to travel with. This brush works with creams, liquids, and powders and has dense, yet soft hairs. One end is meant to get to hard to reach corners of the face and the other is meant to buff in foundation, concealer, etc. I tested this brush with the Cailyn Contour Palette, and I found that it did blend my contour quite well, but it took a really long time to do so. Also, I tried to apply concealer with the tapered contour end, and it was a little rough on my under eye skin. All in all, the brush was okay, but doesn’t compare to my Real Techniques buffers, which are cheaper, too!
Steve Laurant Liquid Lipstick in Mocha - Retail Value $22
Liquid lipsticks and I don’t agree most of the time, and this one is no different. I enjoy a juicy, glossy lip look; liquid lips typically make my pout look sad, shriveled and dry, and this lipstick is no different. The color I received is Mocha, a warm brick red. This gluten and cruelty free product applies evenly over my lips, but it dries with a sticky finish. I am also unimpressed with the plasticy vanilla scent.
Here is a look I did using all of the products this month (I am not wearing the liquid lip in this photo because I felt like the red clashed with the green eye).
Verdict: Another satisfying box from Slay Glam with a $176 value all for under $25! I really like the colors they sent out this month as well as the array of brands being sampled. A few items weren’t quite my speed, but the eye color kit (which is worth double the cost than this entire box) will be a bright staple this spring.
