Be Kind by Ellen Summer 2019 Review
This box comes with a large fold-out card and a note from Ellen. It also gives details of all of the items included this month.
Now, on to the items!
Drunk Elephant The Littles Set - Retail Value $90.00
Woo! I have been wanting to try this brand but I haven't pulled the trigger, mainly because they are pricy! This kit contains a month's worth of product so you can try 8 of their most popular formulas for yourself. So often I get samples of higher-end skincare that only allow me to try it out for a few days, so 30 days feels like a real treat! All arrived packaged into a cheerful blue zip pouch.
Here is what's inside:
- 1 oz Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser - An innovative jelly cleanser that removes all traces of makeup, excess oil, pollution and any other grime from the day.
- 0.27 oz C-Firma Day Serum - A revolutionary vitamin C serum packed with a powerful antioxidant complex of l-ascorbic and ferulic acids to reveal a brighter, firmer and more even-looking complexion.
- 0.27 oz B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum - Like a cool drink of water for your thirsty skin, this ultra-hydrating serum replenishes the complexion and improves the look of skin texture and tone.
- 0.27 oz T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum - A high-tech AHA/BHA gel that resurfaces dull, congested skin by gently lifting away dead skin cells.
- 0.27 oz Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil - Rich in critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9, this Marula nourishes and balances while restoring a youthful glow.
- 0.16 oz C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream - A rich and restorative eye cream featuring a brightening combination of eight peptides, five forms of vitamin C, and cucumber extract for firmer, stronger-looking skin around the eye area.
- 0.5 oz Umbra Tinte Physical Defense SPF 30 - This tinted, physical sunscreen delivers UVA/UVB protection and is loaded with potent antioxidants to minimize the appearance of photoaging for a more youthful-looking complexion.
- 0.5 oz Protini Polypeptide Cream - This breakthrough protein moisturizer combines an unprecedented array and concentration of signal peptides, growth factors, amino acids and pygmy waterlily for visible and immediate improvement in the appearance of skin’s tone, texture, and firmness.
Look at how cute! So even as a skincare addict, I was kind of stumped at where to begin. There is a ton of variety in this pouch! Luckily, the Drunk Elephant site has a ton of helpful info, including a suggested routine, especially for this kit. I followed this to the letter for 4 days, forsaking all of my other favorite products.
Morning: C-Firma mixed with B-Hydra. Followed by C-Tango Eye Cream. The eye cream didn't sit very well on top of the other products and did have some dreaded pilling issues. I recommend moving it to your night rotation or using solo. The first two products played very well together and left my face a little shiny, but after a thin layer of the Umbra Tinte, a little powder fixed that pretty quickly. The Umbra Tinte is a little darker than I need, but it was so sheer that I wore it anyway.
Evening: Cleansed with Beste Jelly Cleanser. Nothing super remarkable here, but it is a solid cleanser. A little goes a long way! Followed up with a mixture of Framboos Night Serum and Marula Oil. (I loved this oil!). Finally, A thin cover of the Protini Cream.
My thoughts? This is a SOLID routine. Between all of these formulas, your skin gets a ton of high-quality ingredients. My skin looked beaming just after 4 days. I wish I liked this kit less, because now I am really tempted to buy another one when this one runs out. $90/month for a well-rounded, high-quality skincare routine might be more affordable and make more sense for some people than buying full sizes over time. I am really thrilled with this kit.
Also included was a highly informative booklet with even more info on each and every sample.
Reusable Straw Kit - Listed Value $12.00
More straws! Reusable straws have been one of the subscription box darlings of 2019! I am still really excited about them. I have them stashed all over my life, from my car, to my kitchen, office desk, everywhere I might need a straw. In the US alone, we go through 500 million straws in a single day! Are there bigger environmental issues? Certainly! But a reusable straw is something simple, stylish, and easy! This set of 4 is especially pretty, with two coated in a multicolored finish and the other two are a coppery tone. There are also 2 straight straws and 2 curved. Worried about keeping them clean? Included is a handy brush.
30 Days To Happiness: Daily Meditations and Actions for Finding True Joy Within Yourself by Rhonda Sciortino - Retail Value $12.50 (found on sale for $11.08)
I don't love books like this and I am generally self-help-book-phobic, but I can't deny that this sort of thing totally fits inside an Ellen box. Cheerful and positive, this is a short and very easy read, focused on the power of positive daily meditations.
Vunder Tahiti Candle Holder - Retail Value $21.00
This is kind of cool. It is a votive holder with a waterproof sealed bottom, so you can fill it with anything you want, then let the gentle light of a votive shine through. Of course, I filled mine with crystals! I have tons in my office and thought there was nothing prettier I could choose. The effect was actually very pretty and I like this piece a lot more than I thought I would.
Lovely! As a side note, if you are also a crystal addict, you should 100% check out the Enchanted Crystal box. Most of these pretties are from that subscription. 🙂
At this point, the rest of the contents of the box are more promo-code based, which can be a huge value or none at all depending on your preferences.
Boxed Water Sample and $20 Promo Card - Listed Value $20.00+
Along with the reusable straws from earlier, this is a product that is focused on reducing plastic waste. Boxed Water is packaged in paper, and its square shape makes it utterly stackable, something my pantry appreciates. Fun Fact: every time anyone posts an image of a Boxed Water and use the #BETTERPLANET they plant a tree!
Spotify Premium, 60 Days for Free - Listed Value $19.98
Who doesn't love commercial-free tuneage? This promo card gifts you two months of the Spotify Premium service. It is worth noting that if you have tried a Premium trial before, you are ineligible.
Aaptiv, 2 Months of Unlimited Workouts - Listed Value $30.00
I have tried this app before and really enjoyed it. Basically, it is a service with tons of audio workouts (over 2500!) led by world-class trainers and paired with music to get you moving. I used this while running, something I despise and am terrible at. The trainer guidance and cues did help me make the best of my short run. Not a runner? They have tons of different workouts to choose from, everything from elliptical routines to weights and yoga. At $14.99 a month after the trial, it could certainly be an economical alternative to a traditional gym membership.
Verdict: This box is likely going to be a little polarizing because so many of the "items" are promo codes. If you love skincare, you probably enjoyed this box. If you don't, you might be less enthused about the overall value. I personally liked all the items, even the ones offered in promo code form, mainly because I was already either using or have tried both services before and had a positive experience. As someone who really doesn't care that much about candle holders, I was surprised at how much I liked the one in this box. Filling it with crystals was just really enjoyable! I am always down for more fancy, reusable straws and metal is my favorite straw material. The book is a little lost on me, but is very "Ellen". The overall value of this box lands somewhere around $205.48, which is great for a $54.99 box, with about $135.50 of that being in physical goods that actually arrive inside the box.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! This box is still available.
