September 2021: Inner Healing

This month's Black Girl Magic Box came with a September newsletter focused on inner healing. As we begin to wind down from summer and head into the last quarter of the year, I'm looking forward to an inward look and reset. I'm hoping the products included in this box will help to prepare my space for a new season. A Magical Affirmation card was also included.

Flying Wish Paper – Retail Value $11.00

Our first item in this month's box is so unique and was a lot of fun to do! I've never heard of flying wish paper before, but the premise is you write your wishes and intentions on the wish paper. You then light the paper and watch your wishes fly into the atmosphere. Doing this activity made my soul feel so good and filled me with hope. I truly believe in speaking things into the universe and this felt like a visual representation of doing just that.

Tule Fog Sandalwood & Eucalyptus Candle – Retail Value $18.00

If you've read previous reviews of mine, you'll have learned that I am completely infatuated with candles. I love the cozy feeling I get after lighting them, I love how you can light them in any season, and I love a good fragrance. This individually poured soy wax candle smells of fresh eucalyptus and I am flooded with thoughts of a beautiful green forest full of plants and new life. I'm thinking of fall days to come where I'm nice and cozy, with a candle lit, house cleaned, and reading a good book (laying next to my dog of course).

Trade Street Jam Co. Sour Cherry Ginger, 1.25 oz – Estimated Value $1.94

Sweets should be a definite while going on this inner healing journey and this jam will do just the trick. I turned my nose up a tad at the "sour cherry ginger" name. Sour flavors aren't really my jam (haha, see what I did there?), but this jam wasn't sour at all. The flavor was sweet with a little hint of ginger. This jam is all-natural and is made with simple ingredients like cherry, ginger puree, and sugar. You must eat within 2-3 weeks of opening because there are no preservatives added. Lucky for me, it's day 2 and the jar is almost finished. Or maybe not so lucky for me. I guess I'll just have to buy more!

Air Plant

This little gal has me completely smitten! I am a self-proclaimed plant mama and keep a ton of greenery around me. This however is my first air plant! Why do plant owners love air plants? Well, they are easy to take care of and *almost* impossible to kill as they do not grow in soil but rather grow from nutrients in the air. You only need to soak in water once a week for 20 minutes, and then turn upside down to air dry. That's it! As long as you can remember the weekly watering, you're almost guaranteed to keep this plant alive. Also, it's so stinking cute!

Motherland Essentials Citronella Lemongrass Soap, 4 oz – Retail Value $7.00

Our last item in this month's Inner Healing themed box is a soap bar by Motherland Essentials. Bathing is a symbolism of healing and this soap bar promises to energize and refresh. I have mixed feelings about this soap. There is a part of me that is very much drawn to the smell (I think it's the lemongrass scent I like). I am equally though, turned off by the smell of the citronella. I don't necessarily want to smell like an outdoor candle. I washed my hands with this bar soap (because I was nervous about using it on my whole body, again, I didn't want to smell like a bug candle) and my hands felt a little dry after washing. I wish it was a little more moisturizing. I will probably keep this as a kitchen hand soap rather than use it as a full-body soap.

Verdict

This month's Black Girl Magic box was a nice reminder to cleanse, reflect and prepare for our transition into the last part of the year. How cool and unique was the flying wish paper? I'm looking forward to manifesting great things with this activity. The soap bar is really throwing me guys. I love the lemongrass smell, but the citronella is a little off-putting. I'll be leaving it as a hand soap so my guests can decide whether it's a hit or miss.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Order now to receive the next box. From Black Girl Magic Box:

Boxes ship bi-monthly on the 25th. Please order by the 15th of that month to receive the current shipment.

Value Breakdown: This bi-monthly box costs $63.94 ($54.95 + $8.99 shipping). That means each of the 5 items cost approximately $12.79. While the price was unknown for the air plant and pot it was in, based on similar items, I estimate that we have still received over $100 in merchandise.

That is a very sad looking box for $64. You’re paying more then retail, which is nuts. The value is just not there. I don’t think this box is worth more then $20. The description says 7-10 products, and the box only had 5. I love the message of the box, but they need to do better.

I agree this is very sad and disappointing for the price. I hope they make the next one more appealing and worth the money.

Well the reviewer was happy with the items, so I guess “appealing” is in the eye of the beholder. But wow! It does seem to be way overpriced for the few little things that were in there.

Goddess Provisions sent that Flying Wish Paper in a box sometime in 2020.
