January 2022: Holiday Box
This month's Black Girl Magic Box came with a January newsletter focused on celebrating, community, family and culture. The holidays have come and gone and one holiday that truly focuses on the African American family is Kwanzaa. This newsletter touches on the history of Kwanzaa and the importance of the 7 values. A Magical Affirmation card was also included.
Black Girl Magic Box Journal
Starting our box review and our new year ensuring we make self care a priority! I've made an intention with my self this year to focus on me more and I'm so happy to have this journal to assist me with that. Each page contains a daily check in. You indicate what self care activity was performed, what you feel, what you're grateful for, and what you receive. I'm going to allow this journal to hold me accountable on my intentions.
Deanan Vanilla Corn Singles, 1.5 oz – Estimated Retail Value $1.75
Buy a box of 25 single packets for $43.75
I'm sure I shared this here before, but popcorn is my favorite snack. I love cheese popcorn, caramel, kettle, butter ... I really love it all! This was my first introduction to Deanan Gourmet Popcorn and it was nice to learn this is a family owned and operated business. They pride themselves on using the freshest quality ingredients to make their popcorn stand out from the rest. The flavor I received is vanilla and it's quite tasty. The vanilla is mild and provides just the right amount of sweetness. Think of a milder version of kettle corn. From the website, it seems the purchase of this popcorn is used mainly for organizational fundraisers. A nice welcomed change from the candy bars and pepperoni pizzas that are generally sold for fundraisers.
Black Girl Magic Box Light the Way Candle, 4 oz
The Light The Way candle is Black Girl Magic's launch of an additional candle that represents the values of Kwanzaa. The scent is sandalwood and amber which promotes calmness and reduces stress and also smells heavenly. Another item promoting self care. Do I hear New Year Resolution for us all : Self Care!
Black Girl Magic Manifest Whipped Body Butter, 6 oz
How appropriate that this whipped body butter is called manifest, as we are manifesting nothing but positivity for our new year! What's really neat about this body butter packaging, is there is an actual manifestation on the side that begins with "My body deserves love". A resounding YES to our bodies deserving love! The scent of this body butter is eucalyptus and mint, with the mint being extremely fragrant. I wish there was more of a balance in scent between the eucalyptus and mint. The body butter is very soft and melts right into the skin.
Black Girl Magic Box Manifest Bath Soak, 8 oz
This bath soak is the partner to our whipped body butter above. The scent is also eucalyptus and mint, and has the same unbalancing of fragrance. This soak has a label that also has an affirmation, and it is a different one than from the body butter which I appreciated. I have to give it to BGMB. These two products have melted like butter into my skin leaving it so soft! Just as with the butter though, I wish the mint smell wasn't so strong
Soap Distillery Mint Mojito Soap Bar, 4 oz – Retail Value $8.00
Some more mint delivery in this month's box. This soap is in the scent mint mojito and honestly smells just like one! Soap Distillery makes their soaps in small batches and uses olive and sunflower oils to nourish skin. The poppyseeds in the soap made for an exfoliant feel when first used. Sadly, this was another item that was too much mint for me.
Zanset x BGMB Serenitea, 4 oz
We end our Holiday Box review with a partnership between Zanset and BGMB. Their Serenitea is a blend of chamomile, lavender, and yes you guessed it - mint. But surprisingly (and thankfully) this tea smells and tastes more like the chamomile and lavender. I love the combination of flavors!
Verdict
I think this was a decent BGMB this month. The products were a great fit for the holiday theme. I have to admit, the amount of mint products were a little overwhelming. I get that mint is a form of cleansing, and so makes sense that it would be in a box ushering in the new year. It was just a lot as a person who is not super into the smell. I can't wait to use my new self care journal as a way to hold myself accountable when it comes to taking care of ME! Another Brittany favorite item was the wood wick candle. I wish it came in a larger size!

Value Breakdown: This bi-monthly box costs $63.94 ($54.95 + $8.99 shipping) and I estimate that While the prices were unknown for the majority of items this month, based on similar products, I believe I've received more value than the $63.94 paid.
