First Impressions
November is on its way, and I am sooo ready to embark on my TokyoTreat Osaka Snackathon! Last month was my first experience with this box, and I was extremely impressed. This month brought a delightful bright orange box to my doorstep packed with fourteen snacks shipped directly from Japan! Being one of the most fun subscriptions I've ever unpacked, I am definitely a fan! Read below to see what I discovered.
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
KitKat Mont Blanc - Retail Value $7.99
I absolutely loved the Kit Kat Mont Blanc flavor! The combination of creamy white chocolate and the subtle sweetness of chestnut created a fantastically unique and indulgent treat. Each bite was like a delightful escape, reminiscent of cozy autumn days and picturesque mountain landscapes <- seriously it was amazing! The smooth texture of the chocolate perfectly complemented the rich chestnut filling, making it a satisfying snack that both myself and my kids enjoyed. Thank goodness we received such a large package!
Japanese Plum Soda
I am always down for a fancy soda, and this plum version did not disappoint. With its refreshing sweetness and tangy flavor, it made for the perfect thirst-quencher, especially on these warm fall days. Not only did I enjoy this tasty drink, but my son was obsessed! With a slew of fizzy bubbles, this seemed more carbonated than American drinks, and quickly became one of our very favorite inclusions this month.
Salsa Sauce Katsu Bites
Salsa Sauce Katsu Bites are a game-changer! The crispy exterior pairs nicely with the soft inside, while the salsa inclusion adds a vibrant kick that elevates the entire experience! Each bite delivers a delightful crunch, followed by a burst of flavor that balances savory and spicy notes. They make for an excellent snack on the go, and everyone in my family loved them!
Ponsuke Nori and Salt Snacks
I'll be honest, when I first opened this package, I was a little bit scared to try this rice cracker treat. Smelling a bit fishy, these interestingly shaped treats are seaweed flavored and the sweet and salty description didn't have me convinced. I did give one a try, and actually really liked it! The sweet and salty mix created the perfect combination, and didn't have a fishy taste at all. Yum!
Ramune Dorayaki
After four delicious treats, I was curious as to how treat number five would fare. While I am all about pancakes, I am definitely not all about red bean paste. Decent in size, this soft flap jack had great flavor when it came to the breading part, but the pairing with lemon lime bean paste was just not something I enjoyed. While interesting, between the four members of my family, not one of us went back for another taste. You can't win 'em all, right?
White Chocolate Crunch
Four out of five treats so far isn't bad, so what did number six have in store? Deliciousness, that's what! This light airy wafer-like treat definitely wins when up against American versions, and has the best white chocolate flavor. I actually tested this treat when the boys were in the other room, and by the time they re-appeared, it was gone. Whoops!
Koikeya Wasabi Seaweed Chips
Whenever I read the description of wasabi, the "Cars" movie comes to mind. Mater is definitely quite the character, and while I don't have a ton of experience with this flavor, think I handled it better than that cartoon! These ripple chips have a fantastic crispness to them, and are packed with flavor. The wasabi pairs with the seaweed for a spicy, yet enjoyable flavor that is definitely unique when it comes to the chip world. The boys needed a little bit of extra water when eating, but they too enjoyed these tasty chips.
Squid & Pickled Ginger Tempura Chips
I'll be honest - I'm sort of a picky eater. When it comes to snacks I'm pretty open to trying new things, but the squid addition just has me a little squeamish. I have never had squid before, and I'm not sure if I'm ready. I opened these Squid and Pickled Ginger Tempura chips, and was greeted by a definite fishy scent. The description mentions they are savory and salty with a sweet finish, and I swear I'm going to try them, but maybe after I have a bit of liquid courage to help me overcome my nerves. Has anyone tried these?! What did you think?
Pull-Apart Sea Animal Gummies
Gummies are always a hit, and this version was no different. This small packet only contained a few gummies, but the pull-apart aspect was really fun for the kids. Cola flavored items must be popular in Japan, because these blue octopus guys are that flavor. Intriguing indeed, I myself would have rather had a fruity gummy, but my kids enjoyed them and gobbled them right up.
Don Taro Udon Snack
The next snack we received was reminiscent of a soup addition. These crunchy little salty snack tastes just like Unami udon broth, but it's a little hard to describe because I have never had that. Sort of a mix between a crouton and La Chop noodles, these were a great snack by themselves, but they also went well on salad and in soup. The light crunch made for an exciting texture addition, and the salty broth flavoring paired well as it was pretty mild.
Cola Mochi
It is interesting to me just how popular Cola flavored items are in Japan. Here we have a really cute packaging of gummies in a small styrofoam container with a little toothpick. Definitely unique, you can use the toothpick inside to stack up the goodies and enjoy quick, tasty bites. With a cola flavor, these do taste slightly like Coca Cola or Pepsi, but in gummies form. While I do enjoy a cola flavored pop once in a while, I'm not sure I need that type of flavor in my snacks too. Fun to try, but not something I think I'd crave.
Kitsune Udon
I am loving the inclusion of a microwave item in the Tokyo Treat box! This full size cup contains an Osaka staple! Inside is seasoned tofu, with wake seaweed, deep dash broth, and bits of green onion with smooth, flat noodles. To prepare, you fill the cup with boiling water to the inside line, close the lid and let it sit for three minutes, stir, and enjoy! These were really tasty, and while I didn't think I was much of a fan of tofu, enjoyed the mix of flavors and this authentic treat!
Dotonbori Grilled Crab Sticks
I'll be honest, while I eat a ton of beef jerky/venison jerky/goose jerky/pork jerky, I am too scared to try a crab stick. While I do enjoy some seafood, it is usually deep fried with mega amount of dipping sauce. I opened the package and just couldn't do it. I have saved it in a Ziplock bag for when I have the nerve, but I'm just not there yet. How was this rectangle of crab? Should I just be brave and try it?!
Takoyaki & Soy Peanuts
The last item we received was definitely one of my favorites. This package of Takoyaki & Soy Peanuts were the perfect mix of sweet, crunchy, salty, and savory. Before I tried them, I didn't realize that Tokyaki is round dumplings filled with octopus. Was octopus included in this delightful little mix, I'm not sure, because the Common Allergens listed were only wheat and peanuts, but even if it was, I'm down because they are delicious! I definitely wouldn't be sad if Tokyo Treat decided to include a portion of these each and every month!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, but this was only my second review of TokyoTreat. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I can say I am beyond impressed with this subscription. While last month's version was pretty heavy on sweets because of Halloween, November took us on a little more savory route. With fourteen authentic snacks, my family and I enjoyed almost every single one. (I'm still holding out on the crab stick). My kids are loving the fun packaging and already are looking forward to December's box. Any ideas on the theme?! Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 11/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 14 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.57 a pack, this is a bit more pricy than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
