First Impressions
We are only a few days away from New Year's Eve and we received the January TokyoTreat right in time to ring in the New Year! With a festive "New Year's Treatings" greeting, I knew this box was going to be epic, and the brightly colored box and shiny packages alone had me excited! This month the orange box arrived at my doorstep, packed with fourteen snacks straight from Japan. As my fourth TokyoTreat box, I can confidently say it’s one of the most fun subscriptions I’ve ever unboxed—I'm definitely a fan! Keep reading to see what I discovered.
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Strawberry Chocolate Cake KitKat - Retail Value $8.00
I think my favorite part of the TokyoTreat box is the inclusion of a new kind of KitKat bars every month. While I love the original version we have in the United States, I can't help but swoon over the gourmet versions this box sends. For January, we received a big bag of strawberry chocolate cake flavored KitKats. This version was absolutely decadent and combined the delicious wafer crunch of the traditional KitKat with the flavor of chocolate dipped strawberries. Packaged in festive blue wrapping, these bars are adorned with snowflakes and ornaments and are the perfect snack to ring in the New Year!
Matcha Au Lait
I'll be honest, I have never tried matcha before, and I was a little scared! While I have tried matcha-flavored chocolates and foods incorporating it, I've never divulged in a green cup, but was ready to give it a go! After warming up 180mL of water, I added the powder and was greeted with an earthy green mug of warmth. This was unexpectedly nutty and sweet, and was actually pretty darn good. The directions state this could be served hot or iced, and while I enjoyed the warm version, I think I would like to give the iced version a go too! Maybe they'll send another pack soon! 🤞🏻
Strawberry Dorayaki
The second snack we received mixed a breakfast staple and a fruity treat into one! This little pancake sandwich has a smear of strawberry in the middle for a sweet little treat. The included pamphlet suggests pairing this snack with a hot drink, but I preferred it with a glass of milk. The pancakes were soft and fluffy, and the strawberry center was natural in flavor and sweet. Interestingly enough, January is the start of strawberry season in Japan, and knowing that gives me a little hope for spring and our own strawberry season - though I have to wait a lot longer!
Golden Kinako Mochi
Soybeans are a crop that are grown around our area, but I haven't had many opportunities to try snacks utilizing them. This sweet treat is a chewy square that is coated in a nutty soybean powder. It's sweet and chewy with a gooey gummy-like center. Very eccentric in flavor, this was definitely not something I've ever tried before, but it wasn't bad. I appreciated the size of this package as it contained 6 treats for multiple people to try!
Daruma Peach Gummies
Gummies are definitely one of my kids' favorite snacks, so we are always excited to receive Japanese versions. This package is absolutely adorable and even features a sliding closure to keep the package fresh! With a handful of translucent pink peach circles, these gummies have a true peach flavor that melts in your mouth. Ultra chewy in texture, these are long lasting and are just plain fun. Everyone in my family gave these two thumbs up!
Ghana Moist Chocolate Cake Truffles
I'll be honest, after all of our Christmas celebrating, I'm a little truffled out, but I just had to give these chocolate cake truffles a try. Upon first taste, these had a texture very similar to a chocolate covered raisin, without the raisin flavor. Packed with moist cake, these have a thick chocolate shell and soft inside. Very rich in flavor, these pair well with a glass of milk, and are really pretty in presentation. I am definitely a fan!
Good Luck Taiyaki
Wafers are a big deal in my house, and this giant fish version was the best! Displayed on a black plastic tray, this fish had a vanilla shell with an airy chocolate filling that created the best snack. Not only is this guy actually fish shaped, but it's also embossed with scales and fins! At first my kids thought this was actually going to contain fish, but were pleasantly surprised to find it a sweet treat. Another win for this month's box!
Hokkaido Smoked Butter Chips
Heading into the year 2025 we have had a large amount of sweet treats. To round things out, we received a large bag of butter flavored chips. These chips are salty and smokey in the absolute best way. Similar in texture to Lay's original, these are bigger and a little thicker with a much more sophisticated taste. Both of my kids preferred these to our American version, and we are definitely in the market for more!
Crispy Caramel Bites
Heading back to the sweet side of things, we received a small bag of these crispy caramel bites. Made from wheat, peanuts, and dairy, these snacks have a slight peanut shape to them and are crunchy, sweet, and nutty. Another treat that was different than anything I have ever tried before, these fried bites are a delightful little snack!
Miso Seafood Cutlet
If you have ever read my reviews before, you'll know that straight up seafood items just aren't my jam. This fried cutlet looked okay, but I was too scared to give it a try. My kids were too intimidated as well and passed it up. Because I would never let a "premium" product go to waste, I packaged it up in a resealable baggie and have it in my backpack for my co-worker that loves seafood treats.
Butter Seaweed & Salt Peanuts
While seafood scares me a little bit, I do love seaweed flavored items. These peanuts have a buttery, salty, and savory flavor and are a great alternative to all of our sweet snacks. These are giant sized peanuts and the amount of flavoring was perfect. Packed with protein, these are a great on the go snack, and I really enjoyed this inclusion.
Seafood & Vegetable Dash Ramen
My kids love Ramen noodles, and we've been hit with yet another virus, so this arrived at the perfect time! While my kids weren't sure about the seafood flavor, they did decide to split this package, and found it to be tasty. With a savory flavor, this did have a bit of a seafood aroma, but they enjoyed it. I do appreciate this lunch item as part of the box, because it really gives this subscription a rounded out feel that is good for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner!
Corn Potage Puffs
As we start getting to the end of this month's box, we are greeted with a few more savory items. This next inclusion is a small bag of corn potage puffs. Light and airy in texture, these crispy little balls taste like creamed corn in a light and savory way. The kids appreciated the flavor of these corn puffs and we actually looked up a recipe for real creamy corn potage to try this summer. What a fun find!
Lucky New Year's Arare
The last item we received was another intriguing one. These rice crackers have a sweet little fish shape to them and are crunchy and a tiny bit sweet. While not overly flavorful, these are a nice little treat for on the go to hold you over until your next meal. Cute in appearance and tasty in flavor, these were great!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, and after four months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is my favorite snack box of all time. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I can say I am beyond impressed with this subscription. I found this month to be pretty heavy on the sweets, with a little savory mixed in, which I'm completely fine with. My favorite was a tie between the Strawberry Cake KitKats and Good Luck Teriyaki wafers. With fourteen authentic snacks, my family and I enjoyed everything except the seafood cutlet, which statistically is pretty dang good! My kids are loving the fun packaging and already are looking forward to February's box. Any ideas on the theme?! Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 1/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 14 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.57 a pack, this is a bit more pricy than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
